Westminstenders: Stuck in the Middle With TIGGERS

Well I don't know how we got here tonight.
We've got the feeling that something ain't right.
We're so scared as we leave the EU
And we're wondering how we'll get out of this stew

Antisemites to the left of me!
Dog Whistles to the right!
Here I am stuck in the middle whilst we leave the EU.

'Cause I'm stuck in the middle whilst we leave the EU.
And I'm wondering what it is we should do.
It's so hard to keep this smile from my face.
Losing control and running all over the place.

Clowns to the left of me!
Jokers to the right!
Here I am stuck in the middle whilst we leave the EU.

When you started off with rights
And you're starting to wonder if thats for life.
And all the politicians come crawling
Slap you on the back and say
Please . . .
Please . . .
Vote Leave and back EU Withdrawal

But we see it makes no sense at all.

Best to keep your money offshore
Than to visit the bookstore

Deniers to the left of me!
Islamaphobes to the right!
Here I am stuck in the middle with you.

Its finally happened. FINALLY.

MPs have seen that their leaders have lost the plot and are hell bent on destruction and politicial ideology ahead of practicality and will justify the unjustifable in the face of democracy and they have jumped ship.

Enter stage left and stage right: The TIGGERS - members of The Independent Group.

Will there be more. Hard to say no. It seems almost certain there will be more.

Will it make a difference? Difficult to call, but these MPs would be driven out sooner or later. Such is our accelerating politicial polarisation and narrowing of views. This is their last stand. They have nothing left to lose on a personal level.

Whether you agree with the TIGGERS or still look to the other parties for policy, I do think that the emergence of the TIGGERS marks a feeling of optimism and much needed hope for many many Remainers / Moderates, even if it ultimately does fizzle out.

A reflection from 2017: People voted for Corbyn because they were looking for Hope. When he's failed to deliver that, its led to disillusionment and he can not pull the same trick again at a future GE. This makes that doubly so. People are STILL very much looking for that hope. If Brexit does go tits up in a big fashion, then what happens? To what direction do people look? I'm sure there will be the bitterest of recriminations, but... hope is a big deal. We need something...

Tick tick tick. 37 days til Brexit.

My MP is in the thisck of the ERG but I keep writing. I thought he had stopped writing back but he hasn’t, very polite but unswayable. He’s shot himself a bit in the foot though as mood swinging a bit here and he came out trying to rebrand No Deal as Clean Global Exit. Quite a few people missed that so I am making it my mission to enlighten them . He’s got a big majority currently from last two elections but prior to that we were Lib Dem for years due to people really liking previous MP. Think the right Tigger might have a chance here so he needs to be careful.

Emailed Tobias Elwood recently as a Dorset resident though not my MP to thank him for being the local voice of reason compared to Mr Clean Global Exit, Mr incredibly patronising to constituents in writing Burns and Chris blocking Upskirting and FGM bills Chope. Also emailed support to Letwin who is another Dorset MP though further afield .

Blair also brought in Academy schools, so something like 2/3rds of Secondary Schools are Academies, democratically accountable to no one with multi academy trusts, which I don't recall any one voting for, with Chiefs paying themselves silly salaries.

On the other hand, they didn't have the same nasty attitude towards the poor and I don't remember seeing homeless on the streets during their time.

I wonder if Brexit has driven an increase in voter engagement ? It would be sorely depressing if it hadn't.

Hasenstein · 20/02/2019 16:28

PMK

People saying that the 3 Tory defectors made a more attractive showing than yesterday's Labout 7. Perhaps because the former had an undiluted message in opposition to Brexit, whereas yesterday's TIGGERs had a more mixed message about anti-Semitism, oh and Brexit too.

DGRossetti · 20/02/2019 16:29

ESA is a Labour brainchild.

Actually, that's a good example of how sometimes you simply can't argue with stupid. When DW was "invited" to apply for ESA (2011) , MiL immediately banged on about "the Tories, the Tories". Even when I showed her that it was introduced in 2008 under Labour it was still somehow "the Tories". She never liked me anyway, but pointing out Labours flaws (she was of the "always voted Labour" type) didn't help.

(DW and I are NC for other reasons).

RedToothBrush · 20/02/2019 16:30

so the blame lies across the board.

Yes it does.

It's a gradual slippage in which all were complicit and complacent.

The common themes are a lack of foresight, scrutiny and planning.

This combines with an unwillingness to take difficult decisions if they can be kicked into the long grass, general short termism for party political gain and ever increasing ways to not to be held to account through the use of spin to cover up the mistake rather than take responsibility for it.

That's now all coming to a head.

Of indirect note but the Gilets Jaunes original protest (early November) were about fuel price rises that had been legislated by Mr Macron's predecessor. It was a heavy handed way of trying to meet climate change objectives.

It quite direct actually ... how come all these "initiatives" start with getting joe public to pay extra on top of rather than getting Megacorp inc. to take less profits ?

BudgieBird · 20/02/2019 16:38

Why is it Tiggers and not Tigers?

SparklySneakers · 20/02/2019 16:38

Thanks red. Might get to keep up with this one!

DGRossetti · 20/02/2019 16:40

Why is it Tiggers and not Tigers?

Possibly too close to Cougars and Pumas ?

RedToothBrush · 20/02/2019 16:41

BTW, that's also why Heidi Allen say in effect 'I was wrong' will tick a lot of boxes and be attractive to people.

I think there is a middle class attitude to finances than you spend within your limits but this doesn't work in quite the same way for national finances.

I do think there are large numbers of votes who have woken up to that reality that you can't just treat things in that way, with austerity because it ultimately costs you more in the long run in other areas because national finances arent as simplistic as personal finances (there are also many who haven't realised this too).

I do think we need to generally be more accommodating and accepting to politicians saying we got this wrong but let's do this instead to put it right.

Party politics is the main barrier to that. Particularly in a FPTP system.

Why is it Tiggers and not Tigers?

Cos the tweet I saw was for tiggers not tigers!

Think of tigger v tiger. Which is more positive and makes you think of enthusiasm? Thats the sentiment you want to think of, not fierce vicious beasties.

I think that's why tiggers rather than tigers has stuck in my head.

Hopefully some will also have twigged that "austerity" is just another word for teaching the underclass their place. Poor ? Disabled ? Not our sort of chap ? Then fuck you and fuck you some more.

It's why the bedroom tax costs more than it saves.

Remember the slip a minister gave in evidence to the PAC ? Saying that PIP "had not reduced the overall cost of benefits" - which considering that wasn't part of it's mission brief was either irrelevant, or a glimpse behind the curtain.

Notice there was no "austerity" when Theresa May needed billions to give the DUP a soapy tit wank. Also how quickly there was money found for all the pet projects the Tories kicked off in the past 2 years.

RedToothBrush · 20/02/2019 16:49

And you pronounce tigers ti-gers and tiggers tig-gers.

The acronym is TIG not Ti-G

RedToothBrush · 20/02/2019 16:54

DGR I think many MC Tory voters just saw it all in financial terms not human terms. The idea of hardship and suffering being a result wasn't really something in their bubble of reality.

They thought 'why can't they just manage their finances better like me' rather than 'they don't have enough finances to be able to plan financially or sensibly.

Sensible and responsible were words you could associate with One Nation Tory thinking.

That's kinda had a big hole blown through the middle of it.

TIG just held another press conference with Heidi Allen & Chris Leslie. When asked about returning to the Tories, Allen said she hopes there will be no Conservative Party left to return to. They want to create a successful new kind of politics, not go back to the old, she says.

When asked about whether the next crucial round of Brexit votes (next week lads! 🗳️) could see more MPs from both parties join them, Allen said that while it may not lead to a string of defections, she hopes it will give more the courage to rebel against their whips.

When asked how MPs from different parties will be able to see eye-to-eye on policy, Leslie said:
-they're drawing a line under the past & starting afresh
-they don't always expect to agree on everything
-they hope that by finding a middle group they will have wider public appeal

Damn those grown up politicians !

Be interesting to see how the MSM deals with it ... any space they have to give to dissing TIG is space they can't use to put the boot into Corbyn, or big up Brexit as well as lead to accusations of advertising them rather than silencing them.

RedToothBrush · 20/02/2019 17:09

Hannah Al-Othman @hannahalothman
Chris Leslie said the current Labour Party had been "masquerading as the Labour Party in recent times" and was no longer necessarily aligned with voters.

He laid some of the blame for the shift to what he described as "the hard left" at Ed Miliband's door.

They both said that while Lib Dems would be welcome to join, they were not joining the Lib Dems, who Leslie said have "clear trust issues."

Again, they said "it has to be something new."

TIG are not planning to field candidates at the upcoming local elections. Leslie says he's not sure who to vote for but would look at "qualities of individual candidates."

Allen says she's fortunate not to have local elections to vote in this time.

Bangladesh have said that Begum will not be allowed in there. In other words, they are saying she is now technically stateless...
