Put it to the People March 23rd March

www.peoples-vote.uk/march

While it's cutting things rather fine, the next People's vote is on March 23rd. It's clear the politicians have no clue. They still can't agree on what brexit should look like. Time to take it back to the people.

To people who respond to tell me things like 'we won, get over it',
I'd like to thank you in advance for bumping the thread.

I like toddlers against Tory tantrums Grin

We are a bit hidden away here in Brexit. If anyone feels like signposting others to this thread at all, that would be helpful :)

Place marking as I will be attending with my lovely German friend who has lived here for 15 years or so

PMK

Peregrina · 17/02/2019 13:47

We never got to Parliament Square last time either, but that didn't matter - we helped swell the numbers.

Yaralie · 17/02/2019 14:38

I was very proud of the six members of my family who went on the last march. I'd like to go on this one and think they'd all go too but I do wonder how many marchers it would take to make the Parliament or the Government take notice?

They seemed to ignore the 700,000 who marched last time, possibly beacause they were peaceful, good natured and law-abiding. They paid more attention to 100 or so pro-brexit thugs shouting oscenities, attacking policemen and threatening to kill MPs.

Over 1 million peaceful demonstrators marched to protest against us being involved in the Iraq war and that was ignored too.

I am writing to my MP but he is a pro-brexit Tory who says most of his postbag is from leavers (and he may in this instance be telling the truth). What more can we do?

I think the person commenting below the article has it summed up....

This is what you get when you exercise your right of peaceful protest in Brexit Britain. Sneering contempt in advance from government ministers who are genetically programmed not to listen to anything you say.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/02/2019 15:46

I don't think we were ignored last time, the tone in parliamentary comments seemed to change for the better and there was more talk about a people's vote for a time after. We need to keep trying.

Do we need to move this to chat for more traffic?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/02/2019 16:17

I thought about chat, but mn keep putting threads back into the Brexit box.

I was at the last march with DH, DD(9) & DD(5).
We live in central London so it’s not too much of a pain getting there & back.
I think we might join along the route & peel off before the end.
Last time we were at park lane for ages!

borntobequiet · 17/02/2019 17:06

It’s quite difficult to write an AIBU or Chat OP without sounding disingenuous, as if it’s straightforward and includes the word Brexit it gets put into the Brexit box. I might have a go but it’ll be my fourth I think!

LonelyandTiredandLow · 17/02/2019 17:49

I'm sure I'm being dim, but why the red toothbrush?

I want to bring dd too (7yo) and I think she will have fun making a sign.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 17/02/2019 18:07

I've signed up to go. I was there in October and loved it. Sadly I think the atmosphere will be quite different this time.

bellinisurge · 17/02/2019 18:15

The red toothbrush is an homage to the op of all the Westminstenders threads.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 17/02/2019 18:19

Ah so it started here! Amazing! I did wonder if it was to do with Red Smile

onalongsabbatical · 17/02/2019 18:22

So is the red toothbrush, nattily displayed, also a way of recognising a fellow mumsnetter? Thinking of going and I would like to put a RTB sticking out of a pocket or something. Grin

SoloD · 17/02/2019 18:24

Will be going!

The reason for the date it that it is two days before a crucial amendment vote which will pass May's deal if there is a public vote to ratify it but with the option to remain as well.

I wouldn't assume that you'll want to take children.

I think by 23rd March it'll be too late for it to help and emotions could be running high. Even if it has the desired effect it might still be too late (an agreement isnt just about a vote in parliament, it still requires legislation to be debated and passed in both Commons and Lords), and that assumes hard Brexiteers haven't launched legal challenges to revoke/request extension to A50 by then.

By all means go to express your disgust at the outcome, but I think tempers will be high.

borntobequiet · 17/02/2019 18:35

I did an AIBU thread, but you might have to look for it...
I think it would be Ok to take children. Marches are heavily policed, and large numbers of peaceful people tend to dissuade agitators. There’s a pub in Whitehall (?) where there’s a bit of verbal aggro, but that’s it.

SoloD · 17/02/2019 18:41

Look at SODEM and how well they deal with provocation Cake Not Hate for example. Whole ethos of remain is peaceful. There won't be any , trouble, specifically as it is just before crucial vote which could stop Brexit.

Grinchly · 17/02/2019 18:55

I want to go in principle though think the actual aim is pointless.
Trouble is I live far from London and get seriously panicky in crowds ( even coming out of the theatre)
Previously I've contributed to my friend's expenses to attend but she has said she won't feel safe this time either. She's trans , 20 plus years post op and against self ID, but there have been various incidents recently that scared her. Add that to the heightened emotions likely so near to 29 March and it's no way.

littlebillie · 17/02/2019 19:28

I wouldn't Take kids to a march you never know how it is going to end

GlassOfPort · 17/02/2019 19:34

Even with the most useless opposition in living memory, I can't believe that no deal will still be on the table on 23 March.

If it is, I will certainly be marching
