I suspect that many sensible people would accept any result from another referendum as long as it wasn't another slim majority based on widely-repeated and widely-believed lies - and as long as it didn't produce a result that was impossible to implement without an enormous amount of pain.

There probably is a sensible and grown-up way to leave the EU but despite 3 years of bullshit we don't seem any closer to achieving it.

jasjas1973 · 13/02/2019 22:39

NotA - thats prob, the majority didn't! 17m out of 46m out of 65m did, hence the total shit show of division!

If Parliament cannot agree and if a no deal means the likes of Airbus, JLR, Nissan, ford & FS leave the UK, then the only alternative is a revoke OR a PV....

Just leaving without a plan, & nothing to stop companies taking jobs and taxes out of the UK is madness.... taxes pay for the desperately needed public services we all need.

AlphaJuno · 14/02/2019 06:55

I just can't see it solving anything. People say no one 'wants' no deal or would be crazy to vote for it but some leavers actually do! They say it's what they want, 'no deal, no problem!' Is their slogan Hmm. Apparently it's what they voted for, even though 'no deal' wasn't a thing then and there was all sorts of talk about remaining in the single market, but they wanted no deal.

I'm not actually sure if some people think no deal means we 'brexit' but everything stays the same or no deal means no Brexit! There's evidence to suggest not everyone is clear on what it means. Some do know what it means and would vote for it anyway.

bellinisurge · 14/02/2019 06:58

Some people may well know what it means and vote for it anyway but I don't want that mayhem inflicted on my family. Leave but in an orderly grown up way. Or don't leave.

Duckshead · 14/02/2019 07:59

Apparently 26% of respondents in a recent skynews poll thought that No Deal meant that everything just stays the same.... You couldn't make it up...

Frankiestein402 · 14/02/2019 08:07

We cannot survive without a deal with Europe. The debate is whether we agree a deal before we exit or whether we exit then negotiate a deal. Needless to say the latter will result in the worse deal

We do not have the option of not making a deal with the EU it is simply too large a bloc and too close for us to ignore.

MariaNovella · 14/02/2019 08:29

TM’s deal is not fit for purpose and no deal amounts to national suicide.

I think a second referendum would return the same vote. I think the only genuine variable will be if we get an agreement now or drag it out even longer to get the same agreement later.

MorrisZapp · 14/02/2019 09:24

I've asked this on loads of threads but never had a solid answer.

In a people's vote, what would be on the ballot paper?

It would be up to the electoral commission what the words are. If there is an option for No Deal the people's vote route should not be taken.

jasjas1973 · 14/02/2019 09:47

Morris

My preference would be to ask questions that can be delivered on.

so, Mays WA (c/w backstop) verses Remain on present terms.

A no-deal cannot be delivered, we'd just end up arguing all over again, as we seek a series of mini deals to mitigate the disaster.

I think that if May's deal is put to a referendum vote (which is effectively what the Labour Party signed up to in their Party Conference), then with a high enough turnout, she should carry it. With the right message, she may even stand a higher chance of getting in past the voting public than she does getting it through the House of Commons.

Although I hate May's deal (because of the loss of freedom of movement and the loss of effective voice in the EU, loss of cast iron worker rights etc), getting it endorsed by a decent public turn out is probably our least worst option, as the country will then be able to move forward, albeit chastened, reduced and somewhat humiliated, and can concentrate on chasing down the mythical trade deals we have heard so much about.

I think there should be one on the final deal. The first was really more on the concept. Would you leave or stay? Now we should have one for This is what leaving will look like, do you want it?

StripeyChina · 14/02/2019 10:33

I agree that 'we voted' on the Concept.

No one, inc all the politicians, had the first idea of how that would play out, in actuality.

I think a 'final Say' vote would be helpful.

The ballot paper should require you to rank in order of preference:

Exit with No Deal
Remain
Exit with TM current 'deal' (though that changes daily)/extension

What if it is then a 'hung vote' though???

Such a howling mess :(

bellinisurge · 14/02/2019 10:34

If NoDeal is an option, people are stupid enough to vote for it. And bastards like Rees-Mogg and Farage and Johnson, are nasty enough to egg them on.

Duckshead · 14/02/2019 10:39

Mother sadly I think plenty of people would be stupid enough to vote for a No Deal, see my post above re 1/4 of a polled group thinking No Deal basically means just staying the way we are now.

mother
I am not afraid of having No Deal on there. I don't believe that people would vote for that, knowing what they do now.
I wish I shared your faith in humanity
BUT
I hear people saying that as a deal is difficult, "No Deal" will be simpler Sad

twofingerstoEverything · 14/02/2019 14:08

It would be totally irresponsible for parliament to include 'no deal' as an option, given that they know the likely consequences. It would be unprecedented to give the public a choice to vote for something so damaging.

I agree entirely.
