Westminstenders: Competitive Stupidity

RedToothBrush · 10/02/2019 16:00

A week of wondering which MP is going to be the most dumb.

There is stiff competition between parties and remain / leave.

Expect incredible bids of ignorance and incompetence to curl your toes, with a bit of constitutional craziness thrown in for good measure.

Valentine's Day beckons...

... And so does the No Deal Divorce.

I’ve just turned up to a brewery tour organised by Chris Grayling. Unfortunately there isn’t any beer so he’s had to cancel it.

dontcallmelen - give crochet a try. I taught myself from a book, and it's very soothing - and better still, very forgiving of the fact that I'm really pretty shit at it Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 10/02/2019 20:40

many thanks, babooshka that's really kind,
but I have decided to take the risk with my willpower and order a 4-pack of the milk digestives
(I probably won't report back on the results Blush )

A thought:
anyone looking for a little WFH self-emplyment might find opportunities after Brexit, if ordering goods online UK-EU is stopped:
forwarding favourite UK goodies to expats for a handling fee

Some UK firms, e.g. Boots, stopped accepting EU-based orders a couple of years ago

Most downturns give new opportunities for at least a few folk.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/02/2019 20:45

jas With all the hints of no binding vote before March, that is looking increasingly like her plan:
hold the vote so late that there is no time for any more complicated option to work out, literally WA or No Deal

I'm not optimistic, but I really hope the amendment of WA with PV passes:
it looks like the only option that can feasibly stop May's Mad March plan
and at least gives a final say to the voters

PestyMachtubernahme · 10/02/2019 20:53

Maud Dont get crocheting, blankets are warm. I crochet like a nutter and have just remembered I promised to do some classes next month.
Practical distractions are good. Make or grow something.

The worrying, ludicrous thing about Theresa May’s reply to Jeremy Corbyn’s Brexit plan is that it’s been given a “strict” embargo of 10.30 tonight - so it was given out to media this afternoon on the understanding we can’t publish it until 10.30pm.

8:46 PM - 10 Feb 2019

This week’s Brexit motion - the promise of which staved off ministerial resignations - will seek to reaffirm support for Govt re changes to backstop and recognise negotiations are ongoing. ^

Will commit to further amendable motion by Feb 27 if Meaningful Vote has not been passed
....
It does not commit to a meaningful vote at any time.
Merely says if not, then they’ll lay another motion.

Indeed can see no way MV second go is passed this month
given Government will still claim there’s an ongoing process culminating in promised further meeting with Juncker
....
Calculation here is that anti-No Deal ministers willing to give PM & Barclay another 16 of the remaining 47 days
to get legally binding changes to the WA/backstop that the PM has asked for every month since December
& have to date been rejected...
< 🤦🏻‍♀️ >
....
Downing St has previously said that the MV will be returned at a time they are sure it can command the support of the Commons...

Starmer now says will seek amendment this week to compel return of MV by February 27th...

Something as important as the PM’s response to Labour’s proposals on a huge urgent issue such as Brexit should be published immediately, not a matter of calculated media manipulation, or playing the system of media deadlines.

dontcallmelen · 10/02/2019 20:58

Maud thank you, will have a look.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/02/2019 20:59

Leo Varadkar:

'What Jeremy Corbyn has done is fleshed out a potential future relationship which is one that would mean a future relationship that is very close between the EU and the UK.
In that regard they [his plans] are very interesting.

But ultimately I deal with PM May.'

Lucygoeswalkies · 10/02/2019 21:04

Placing stuff. Thanks Red.

I wish I loved gardening, but I don’t even semi-like it. I once had a bumper crop of courgettes though. Had so many I couldn’t even give the bloody things away. Then they turned into marrows intent on world domination. I gave up after that.

My ex husband, until very recently, was convinced that May had a plan. He’s no longer convinced. Instead, he’s pinning his hopes on secret cross party deals being done by moderate MPs who will save the day with a new centrist party. I guess we all need a unicorn at some point in our lives.

Cant keep up with these, and less motivated as like many others am so tired and depressed by the whole situation.

Maybot still kicking the can.

Fuck you, David Cameron.

Legally, there is NOTHING stopping the Government from refusing Parliament a Meaningful Vote (if the PM feels she cannot win one, or can only do so by destroying her Party)
& simply defaulting to a No Deal Brexit on March 29.

The Commons needs to fill the process void.
Quickly.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/02/2019 21:10

Stewart Wood@StewartWood

Just a reminder to MPs that the PM's motion/statement next week is your last chance to put down markers on what should happen next on Brexit.

After that the Govt will have exhausted all its Section 13 obligations to Parliament.

The PM has total control of the timetable after that

Theresa May urged to condemn 'shameful' Conservative MEPs for hosting a leader of Swedish far-right party

Tories continue to flirt with Nazis

https://www.businessinsider.de/theresa-may-urged-to-condemn-conservative-mep-over-swedish-far-right-meeting-2019-2

Conservative MEP for London, Syed Kamall, who chairs the parliament's European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group,
is shown on a panel alongside Mattias Karlsson, the leader of the Sweden Democrats far-right political party in the Swedish Riksdag.

The Sweden Democrats are a hugely controversial party which has its roots in neo-nazi movements of the 20th century.
It joined the ECR group alongside the UK Conservative Party in July last year.
