Westminstenders: Competitive Stupidity

A week of wondering which MP is going to be the most dumb.

There is stiff competition between parties and remain / leave.

Expect incredible bids of ignorance and incompetence to curl your toes, with a bit of constitutional craziness thrown in for good measure.

Valentine's Day beckons...

... And so does the No Deal Divorce.

I've had to take a break from reading the news. I admit I can't really deal with all this uncertainty anymore. I need the headspace to focus on my new job and I've actually enjoyed the break of spending a few days out of the country...
I have nothing new to contribute other than most people I know (myself included) feel incredibly tired of all this. We've been warned of the consequences- again and again- and yet it's happening and we're about to jump off the cliff.
That 'special place in Hell' for no dealers is fully deserved. By the way, in Dante's Inferno the last circle of hell is frozen and reserved to traitors and sowers of discord. Very apt indeed.

PestyMachtubernahme · 10/02/2019 23:12

The trouble with the Irish border is, the only other similar border in the world appears to be the one to the Golan Heights. But they don't yet have a good treaty.

Some people have that slightly morbid wish, to see a no deal punish the leavers and bring them to their senses. I am waiting for UN sanctions.

Things I have learnt in life:
Police etc don't always play by the rules
The press lie

Its sad

Missbel · 10/02/2019 23:15

Beleavers of my acquaintance still insist that all warnings about Brexit are - but if so, even large US businesses are in on it www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/feb/10/brexit-mps-will-have-another-say-by-end-of-month-says-minister : US firms have also started warning of the risks of no deal, with companies including Lockheed Martin, Expedia and food firm McCormick issuing formal stock market notices about consequences including higher costs and business uncertainty. I don't understand how they (the Beleavers) can be so consumed by their own propaganda.

lonelyplanetmum · 10/02/2019 23:16

see a no deal punish the leavers and bring them to their senses.

But for the extreme ones nothing will. The response will either be nasty EU punishing us for not giving us a free gift of what we want, or however bad it gets ... it's well a world recession or depression was coming anyway.

dontcallmelen · 10/02/2019 23:19

lonely i this is what frightens me, nearly as much as a no deal.

Gosh! Someone deserves punishment for not agreeing with someone else? For voting differently? I thought democracy entailed people having different points of view? Didn't realise they deserved to be punished just for disagreeing with my point of view.....Sad

Tanith · 10/02/2019 23:30

"Guess which corrupt racist piece of Kompromat just said 'no' to Jezza's offer and potential to keep our beautiful peace and GFA?"

Sorry, Jericho1: there are so many candidates for that description, I find myself unsure which one you mean... Sad

LonelyandTiredandLow · 10/02/2019 23:35

Getting confused and posting on the old thread...must be time to sleep I guess. See you in a few hours!

PestyMachtubernahme · 10/02/2019 23:36

Sostenueto?

LonelyandTiredandLow · 10/02/2019 23:39

This isn't just a point of view though...it is far deeper.
Unfortunately it will be mostly the leavers with least education who get shafted the quickest, whatever happens. It's the other poor people who didn't vote for destruction that I feel sorry for.
Then I feel sorry for the children and realise I don't feel sorry for the leavers at all in the grand scheme of things.

jasjas1973 · 10/02/2019 23:52

Brexit isn't about a policy argument over dog licences! it has deep and irreversible consequences.
One tragedy of brexit is sympathy for the poor will fall even further, demands for even tighter UC and benefit cuts will rise as the nations purse strings tighten and taxes go up.

PestyMachtubernahme · 10/02/2019 23:56

We are all going to be punished, some of us see it coming and some will be rather surprised. None of us deserve it.

We voted years ago, the fallout will be the same for all.

Sostenueto · 10/02/2019 23:57

I only feel sorry for the poor. Brexit is what it is a complete f* up! It is not what I want but I would not wish Ill on anyone. I'm peeved like everyone else on here, worried ( to an extent, because life and death is somehow more important to me at mo)and angry just like a lot of people. Unfortunately if we leave with no deal it will be hard, harder for the poorer, harder for other vulnerable people worse off than me and I am poor. But I don't wish them or anyone else punished. Democracy is what it is. This lousy government is what it is. I shall just carry on the best I can, help others as much as I can and despite brexit I still am breathing, have the love of my family and friends and my dog and no brexit or any shit life throws at me can take that away. Everything else us periferal to me.

Sostenueto · 11/02/2019 00:04

Punishment maybe wrong word. Yes brexit will affect the majority of people it will mean changes in varying degrees for all. We can blame every tom, dick or harry for the situation. It is unfortunately because we live in a democracy which changes frequently. We just have to learn to adapt to it either Willingly or unwillingly depending on how you voted. No doubt, being a democracy it won't be too long before all changes again. Then we can blame someone else again. Oh the trials and tribulations of life!Grin

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2019 01:10

The EU took May backing the Brady amendment to mean May was pursuing No Deal.

We now have had endless rumours that the Meaningful Vote on Thursday is off but there might be an Amendable Motion (but not full on vote) on the 27th February.

There is a cut off point for the WA after which we can only rely on goodwill from the EU) which no one has thought to ask when this falls (possibly because its already passed, but more likely it falls at the end of Feb).

And everyone is twiddling their thumbs.

Even if we do get an amendment making no deal illegal, May could ignore it, cos frankly, once the deed is down and the country shoots itself in the head not a lot can be done about it.

Its hard not to get annoyed at all the MPs who sat on their hands a bit longer thinking they could just wait for that unicorn to appear to stop No Deal.

I don't know.

Maybe something will appear at the last moment, but all the under currents do very much suggest the EU are reading it right.

Eating dogs to be made illegal in Britain under groundbreaking Brexit bill as Tories table changes

Tory backbenchers have tabled changes to the upcoming Brexit Agriculture Bill to enact the new law, which would also extend to cats

Is dog and cat eating a bit issue within the UK at present??? Is it likely to be in the near future? Actually don't answer that.

Please could you explain 'customs union' to me.

Much Love, Your Dear Friend

P.S. I'm not trying to wait anyone's time here, honest. I'm just doing this all for the media attention.

Politicians think we need to enact a post brexit bill to stop people eating their cats and dogs.

Just let that sink in.

Post-Brexit UK should be ready to use 'hard power' - defence minister

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain should be ready to use military force to support its global interests after Brexit, defence minister Gavin Williamson will say on Monday, adding that the boundaries between peace and war are becoming blurred.

Warning Klaxon *
What struck me on the Remainiacs Podcast this week was Mark Gatiss's comments about genuine fear of war.
All points that way.

Eating pets?
The British Pet Massacre was an event in 1939 in the United Kingdom where over 750,000 pets were killed in preparation for food shortages during World War

Nighty night.

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2019 01:27

The Telegraph use the line that they support No Deal and are afraid of the customs union.

Can we eat guinea pigs post Brexit? Or is that to be made illegal too?

Jericho, the week after the ref I sat on the stairs talking to my parents about how I feared war coming. I felt daft about it for a while after that.

Now?

Really think it a distinct possiblity. The risk of civil war is higher than we'd like to face up to. A little foreign war might look attractive as a means to unite the country and to stop the civil war.

We are already deep into an information and propaganda war, which more often than not proceeds an actual war. The rhetoric of the past two years is deeply troubling.

We know that the EU know this too. There was a comment on the use of language Tusk used that struck me too. Its essence was that they know that the referendum was illegally won.

We know there is lots of evidence relating to Trump which European Secret Services (including our own) know about and isn't all public. We know that Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage have been doing a lot of hanging out with unsavoury indicted individuals. And we know May knows a shit load more and has continued to simply ignore the entire lot.

I don't know. Its there in the back of my mind. I try not to think about it too much as its where you start to sound unhinged or hysterical, yet the pattern matches history and the direction of travel doesn't seem to lessen that.

But yeah. Cats and dogs.

Picassos, a glass piano and missing billions: scandal of 1MDB reaches court
On Tuesday the former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak will go on trial for his alleged role in the 1MDB saga

It is known as the “largest kleptocracy case in the world”, a tangled tale of Hollywood celebrities, Malaysian politicians, luxury yachts, Picasso paintings, power and mind-boggling amounts of stolen money.

The largest kletocracy case brought to court that should say.

I notice it was first uncovered by a British Journalist.

sigh

May you live in interesting times.
