Westministenders: A Special Place in Hell

A quick start to a new thread (as I've not been paying attention this evening!).

May is looking to ditch the Malthouse Compromise. Cos its so rubbish.

The ERG look like they are splitting over it anyway.

Up to sixty Labour MPs could back the WA.

Half the ERG plus Labour Leave Rebels could be enough to get the WA over the line.

Donald Tusk, makes controversial comment by more or less stating the obvious.

RTB
Not sure I'll watch that bit, but the full contest is COMPULSORY in this house
we have been known to have eurovision parties Grin

Jericho1 · 08/02/2019 20:06

'Resilience' is a pernicious 'thing' that has been being promoted in English schools a lot over the last few years. BigChocFrenzy

BBC confiscating EU flags at Eurovision song thing. Making people take in union jacks.

Completely normal.

Colour me surprised Hasenstein Wink

And as expected, the Japan-EU FTA has "Most Favoured Nation" clause, so in the highly Wink unlikely event that even if the UK negotiated a better deal with Japan thanks to disgraced werrity sniffer Fox's incredible negotiating skills Wink - then the EU automatically benefits from the same deal GrinConfused

derxa · 08/02/2019 20:08

I'm watching RTB Grin 'It's Bigger Than Us' What could that be referring to?

It's a shame the tidal lagoon idea hasn't been tested in practice
Um, it has
and its never ever produced as much as it was ever predicted to
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rance_Tidal_Power_Station

I've been there and the destruction of tides of tides behind it is a significant issue

TalkinPeece · 08/02/2019 20:23

I was just getting my daily fix of a crass newspaper website and found a story that I had to check elsewhere ....
did we really ALL miss this one this morning ??

What we've all known (thanks Talkinpeece for the pointer)

did we really ALL miss this one this morning ??

I'm sure I saw it on here earlier, or maybe I saw it via another site.

Apparently she's challenged Rees-Mogg to a nude debate. I think I'd have to give that a miss, however politically interesting it might be (yet again I'm missing the vomit emoji on MN).

TalkinPeece · 08/02/2019 20:48

Do you have any comment on the Private Eye article I posted earlier?
As its about Corbyn's closest confidant
who wants to leave the EU, NATO and the UN

{Re nuclear power. It is by no means perfect, but unless we start using less power, there aren't too many other viable alternatives.}
The problem is that with the push for electric cars demand will increase rapidly, I forget the figures but it might be 20% or so. If they could be recharged by solar it would be good, but most will want to recharge overnight at home, with the obvious problem. Wind is always a bit variable. I like solar PV and solar water heating personally and even in Northern UK solar water heating can be surprisingly effective, as it can take the 'chill' off a tank of cold water at least, even on near freezing but sunny days. This of course saves on gas/oil/electricity to get your hot water.
There is not sufficient water stored (in lakes) high up to be much use in Southern UK. The Trawsfynedd pumped hydro in Wales is good as an emergency 'boost' for when you pop out and put the kettle on during ad breaks but it relies on the low electricity usage during the late night to put the water back up ready for breakfast.
The heating of electricity cables in transmission as mentioned by DGR earlier acts directly as global warming of course.

My understanding is that the lagoon plant is a different form: it's not a barrage across a whole estuary. We need everything we can get at this point, as well as reducing demand back down. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidal_Lagoon_Swansea_Bay

Lucygoeswalkies · 08/02/2019 21:07

LeClerc - I like wind farms. They’re weirdly futuristic and spectacularly sculptural. I don’t object to solar farms either. I live in east Kent and see plenty of both. As you say, we’ve got to get electricity from somewhere - and at least these don’t clog up the atmosphere.

Private Eye has been following the saga of the Cardiff Bay lagoon.
Its maths only work out if
(a) they are allowed to destroy parts of the Cornish coast to get the rock to build it
(b) a 40 year contract on guaranteed unit energy prices seven times the price of offshore wind is signed
(c) nobody gives a shit about the utter destruction of a massive wildlife habitat

mega projects are NOT part of the solution

jasjas1973 · 08/02/2019 21:10

TalkinPeece - no i didn't see, just read it.

Words fail me, if this is where JC et al get their advice from (& stupid enough to take it) then they'll very soon finish off the Labour party.

My opinion of Lab and JC has changed somewhat in the last 6 months or so.

TalkinPeece · 08/02/2019 21:12

LeClerc
I've had solar hot water for ten years
my panel does ALL my water for five months of the year
and tops up my water year round

I have multiple friends in the renewables energy.
THe biggest issue is the lack of effective storage for electricity

and yes, electricity demand will rise as vehicles become electric, but if that is linked to increased storage it can work with renewables

sadly that involves working with other countries to set standards and rules and guidelines
and collaborating with Universities in other countries on research

just as the UK is about to do the opposite Sad

TalkinPeece · 08/02/2019 21:15

JasJas
Its sad isn't it.
So many of us so disenfranchised by so few.

Tonsilss · 08/02/2019 21:17

So according to Private Eye JC wants Brexit because he wants the UK to become allies with Putin's Russia against the United States and the EU?Can anyone explain why these people are so fond of Putin? How can anyone be this mad?

TalkinPeece · 08/02/2019 21:20

1tisILeClerc · 08/02/2019 21:30

{my panel does ALL my water for five months of the year}
This brings another point.
Washing machines and dishwashers that use a hot and cold fill are fairly rare, thus the savings you can get from solar heated water are 'wasted'.
I was getting useful hot water (to about 60 Centigrade) for a good 8 months of a year. Summer peak temperature was 113 Centigrade!
For a washing machine wanting 40 Centigrade for a wash, it could probably be satisfied for 10 months a year, even in the North of the UK, so the electricity would only be needed to swish it around.
Storage of electricity is the massive downer though.
A house wired for low voltage LED lighting which is pretty efficient would be easy to satisfy using moderate storage batteries and solar panels. It is a bit nonsensical to convert say 6 Volts or 12 volts from a storage battery up to 240 to run LED lights when the basic LED elements are actually fed with about 4 volts.

Tanith · 08/02/2019 22:00

At school in the early 80s, I was press-ganged into being the Liberal candidate for a mock-election. I didn't know much about them, or their policies so I made some up, most of which I'm sure would have appalled David Steele Grin
I'd be horrified to find that, over 30 years later, someone is quoting my candidacy speech and holding me to the drivel I came up with!

I'm sure Winchester men would be much better prepared than a naive 11 year old at a state comprehensive and the rest of that PE article is a depressing read.

Cailleach1 · 08/02/2019 22:08

There is an option of feeding excess/unused solar energy back into the grid. You then get credit from the grid for your own consumption. Some countries do this. Newer type of installation.

No, this is what happens.

Do wake up.

GD12 · 08/02/2019 22:37

I have woken up and its not a massive surprise but it's still unreal. I fully expect a no deal.
