Westminstenders: It's oh so quiet...

It's oh so quiet // It's oh so still // You're all alone // And so peaceful until

You ring the news // Bim bam // You shout and you yell // Hi ho ho // You broke the spell // Gee, this is swell you almost have a fit // Brexit is fab and I got hit // There's no mistake get on with it

'Til it's over and then // It's nice and quiet //
Shh shh // But soon again // Shh shh // Uh oh let's start a big riot

You blow a fuse // Zing boom // The devil cuts loose // Zing boom // What's the use
Wow bam // Of leaving the EU

It's gone quiet.

May was supposed to go on a tour of the EU to get concessions. She hasn't.

Instead we are currently stuck in an internal never ending debate about Alternative Arrangements (which is being abbreved too A. A. by less convinced souls) and how Germany got all the money from Marshall Aid (it didn't) and how navy ships can suddenly sprout front opening hulls to become roll on roll off ferries to emulate the spirit of Dunkirk. One of our greatest ever military defeats, which merely had good PR.

The idea that there is going to be any shift in position between now and 14th Feb seems unlikely. It suits the EU and it suits the ERG to be blunt about it. It does not suit the UK national interest though.

Instead our livihoods and futures are slowly drip, drip, dripping away. Invisible to those loved up on the idea of Leaving. But like a newly wed, how long does that feeling last? 42% of British marriages end in divorce after all. When do people fall out of love with Brexit?

The revelation of the need for the WAIB is scary too. The WAIB is the Withdrawal Agreement Implementation Bill. You can read more about it here:
threadreaderapp.com/thread/1091734003265224708.html
Well I say you can read about it, but from the thread you can see that the WAIB hasn't been published yet. And for us to Brexit without a legal and constitutional nightmare parliament needs to pass both the WA And the WAIB. And if you thought it was difficult to get the WA through just wait until you clap eyes on the WAIB details.

With this in mind there are noises from the ERG about an A50 extension. Y'know the one we can't have unless the EU think it's it their interests too.

mlexmarketinsight.com/insights-center/editors-picks/brexit/europe/the-uk-rips-out-its-eu-law-drip,-only-to-hook-up-to-another
More on the WAIB.

Of course there is a more sinister explanation: May does indeed intend to no deal and or use civil contingency law to pass the WAIB in whatever form she sees fit without parliamentary scrutiny.

Tick, tick, tick.

A friend told me today not to worry about brexit as "we survived before and we'll survive again". I didn't say much. My history lessons were rather grimmer in reminding me, that the ones who didn't survive don't get to be so optimistic.

We'll have a lot better chance of rejoining later if we haven't left in a bad-tempered No Deal which trashed the GFA - and trashed our own economy.
i.e. if we're not a basket case, with bombs going off in the City

I've no illusions about the WA:
The fact it doesn't include services - 80% of our exports - is the grim result of May's red lines

This will be a huge motivation in transition to drop those red lines and negotiate a much closer deal with SM+CU,
which would be a great springboard from which to rejoin.

{There are not enough four letter words in the English language.}
Well since we are discussing the EU there are another 26 languages to help you out.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/02/2019 21:29

No Deal is not just about profit and rolling back the welfare state...

Dominic Grieve (very blunt) on BBC Newsnight last week:

"Some in my party won't be happy with any sort of settlement that will leave the GFA intact."

QueenOfThorns · 06/02/2019 21:31

I am yet to receive my delivery of emergency Brexit toilet paper Grin

I have written to my MP this evening to urge him to vote for the WA. I doubt it will do any good, but I have to do SOMETHING or I will explode with frustration Angry

Destiel · 06/02/2019 21:44

My MP is an ERG arsehole.

I loathe him.

He ignores me :)

jasjas1973 · 06/02/2019 21:44

They really would welcome us back in a few years, if we build up public support and politicians to stand up for Rejoin

Once we leave with the WA, they'll be no rejoin....... for starters it will take at least 4 years to sort out a trade relationship, probably far longer... then we would need to find out how we do economically... at least 2 Parliaments.
Another referendum then a Parliament to rejoin... it is just too long a time frame to be realistic...and all the while our right media (+ BBC & Farage) will be campaigning to stay out!

The time to stop brexit is now - i think faced with a no-deal or extension, extension will win and then more time for a PV/GE/Revoke.

prettybird · 06/02/2019 21:49

Mumsnet have said that they have no plans to move that AIBU thread "at this time" (despite the usual suspect's best efforts) Grin

7Days · 06/02/2019 21:56

On my way home this evening I caught part of an interview on RTE radio drive time show. Andrew Bridge (?) Was on, putting forth the Brexiteer case. The surge of visceral rage I felt surprised me.

Now bear in mind, I missed the worse of the troubles through geography and age. Im the picture of middle Ireland (Or, memorably describe as, one of the plain people of Ireland, who eat their dinner in the middle of the day). London or Manchester is like Dublin to me, where people go when they're young to get work but hopefully come home to get married and have their families. I know the words to the rebel songs and I know the history. But the point is It was history and a mild mannered, distracted, harmless mum like me felt vicious rage at what these guys are planning to do.

Extrapolate.
There are hardened men in Belfast and Derry whose hatred has never gone away, you know.
There are the angry left behind in British cities, discontented Scots, Colonel Bristling types, and flocks of aimless youth all over just looking for someone to follow, an injustice to fight.
Add unemployment and the possibilities of food shortages and the fact that NOBODY will have 'won' and it's starting to look very fucking ugly.

Ahhh would this be the same MP that thought all English people were entitled to an Irish passport.

Sorry this is a complete derail - but in terms of other plonkers

I wang to know when we will know more about the Arron banks and Nigel Farage /ERG funding .....

Jericho1 · 06/02/2019 22:08

Great post there 7 Days.

Michelle O Neill was measured and diplomatic as usual on Channel 4 news, but her talks with May had clearly been furious.

I feel like war has been declared. by the english fools.

GD12 · 06/02/2019 22:10

May to delay vote until Feb 25...

BBC news headlines misrepresenting again what Tusk actually said Hmm

He might also have been "heavily criticised" by snowflakes - but he has also been praised by others (like Ben Bradshaw) for telling the truth Smile

And as James O'Brien has pointed out: since Tusk only damned crtiticised those that didn't have a plan to Brexit safely, why are sooooo many of the Leavers taking it personally? Confused Are they admitting that they didn't, in fact, have any plans? Wink Let alone safe plans? Hmm

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 06/02/2019 22:10

But the point is It was history and a mild mannered, distracted, harmless mum like me felt vicious rage at what these guys are planning to do.

My dm had songs such as "will my soul pass through old ireland" sung over her cradle and sang them over mine despite marrying a British soldier (and almost getting disowned by her father's family in the process). My MiL's df was killed in the Troubles. He died over 40 years ago and neither her nor her extended family are over it. Guess how they both voted in the referendum...

I'm angry at our self serving politicians yes but I reserve my red hot molten rage for people like my MiL and my dm who voted without thinking, who are meant to be intelligent but fell for the lies and have possibly condemned their grandchildren's generation to repeat the mistakes of theirs and the one before.

SwedishEdith · 06/02/2019 22:18

Are they admitting that they didn't, in fact, have any plans?

More that they don't read details before reacting. DAG had a great Twitter thread the other day to expose just that.

"Quick stats quiz

Assume there is a 50:50 chance of any child being male or female.

Now assume four generations, all other things being equal.

What are the odds of a son being a son of a son of a son?

A: 6.25%
B: 12.5%
C: 25%
D: 100%

22.5k votes, and still 52:48...

In just under ten years of tweeting I have never had so many genuinely angry tweets in my timeline than those realising they got an answer wrong because they did not understand the question correctly.

And I am a Brexit commentator."

Thread is worth reading for fun.

May to delay vote until Feb 25...

So, over 2 months since Parliament was supposed to have a "meaningful" (Hmm) vote, 4 months after the initial supposed "deadline" of October (to allow time for all the other legislation, including the European Parliament, let alone the WAIB Hmm).

So much for living in a parliamentary democracy Angry

DangermousesSidekick · 06/02/2019 22:20

May to delay vote until Feb 25...

FFS. Delay, delay, delay and filibust until there is no choice left. Parliament and the MPs have got to move.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/02/2019 22:21

fuck. That's so close to the leave date. It leaves no time at all to put anything actually in place.

GD12 · 06/02/2019 22:25

Look at the comments about the remain ministers who were given the assurance they'd have another chance at the Cooper/Boles vote in "2 weeks", they're now saying they're pessimistic it'll pass. They're not saying they'll resign. This is the non existant spine of these remain ministers that will take us to a no deal.

yolofish · 06/02/2019 22:25

Jesus Christ, can she actually DO that?? My DH has waited 4 months for cancer treatment, I thought that was terrible, but that's just him and us... this is the COUNTRY. I am in despair.

New conversation

Darran Marshall
‏*@DarranMarshall*

🚨New Leaked report reveals the “Technological Solutions” explored by ⁦***@LiamFox*⁩ to keep the Border In Ireland open after #Brexit - it involved extensive surveillance.

#Buzzfeed says @LiamFox plan for an open Irish border also suggested :

🔹border cameras to read vehicles’ registration information
🔹facial recognition to monitor anyone within 100 yards of either side of the border.
🔹 a database of “unrecognised” faces.

More from @BuzzFeedUKPol on leaked @LiamFox proposals-

“Faces would be scanned whether people were in vehicles / public transport / on foot, & some of those crossing the border would also be required to carry their passports so that the chips inside them could be read remotely”

Uh-oh. Fox, one of the Brexit brains. Hmm

PestyMachtubernahme · 06/02/2019 22:26

25th WTF??!!

yolofish · 06/02/2019 22:26

Where is the courage, the backbone of these people who allegedly serve us? Why is no one calling for at least an extension or more profitably, to revoke A50? I do honestly despair.

SleightOfMind · 06/02/2019 22:27

And while you 7days, Dinodaffs and the rest of us are staring into the abyss, our PM is busy putting Party before Country once more:
