I survived 1980's recession as a kid, I'm sure I'll survive this

In fairness, my mother couldn't cope with not having potatoes, so heard rice was cheap, which we had religiously.
2 Yellow pack burgers, frozen peas, rice and gravy!!!!

I was very skinny for a few years lol.

*It’s an interesting mentality

Two and a half years ago, they were full of it: taking back control, sovereignty, money for the nhs, brilliant trade deal.

Now they’re: we’ll survive, the Eu won’t let us starve, we’ve had it worse.

Quite the transformation, eh.*

LadyandGent lots of people and communities never recovered from the 80s recession. Although sadly lots of these "left behind" communities voted Brexit. It baffles me.

I don't remember any food effects of the recessions. I was born in 76. My dad was made redundant several times in the 80s though. My grandparents helped out my parents and my nana sent us food parcels regularly. Things were "too expensive" so we didn't have luxuries but we had what we needed. I do remember the worry of my parents though. I remember losing the company car and therefore having no car when my dad lost his job. We'd just moved for his job too and then he was made redundant. Not sure he ever recovered from that blow.

Brexit is the great unknown. We know we are screwed but not to what extent.

I agree, its fascinating

In the 1980s my parents moved to a third world country to escape the recession. They went through two military coups. They had food shortages (real ones.....as in no food anywhere, at all because of military lock down) we survived on mackerel and rice....this was the dogs food. The dog starved......Anyone who has experienced this would never wish it on anyone. It scares the living daylights out of me.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/02/2019 23:32

I think a lot of adults who lived through these recessions would have a very different perspective than the child like ones expressed here

Peregrina · 04/02/2019 11:52

For BillyCongo though even the child's perspective must have been pretty horrible seeing the dog have to starve.

One of many things I studied at Uni was Economics. We'll come out of this. We'll survive. Hanging on by a thread maybe, but we'll survive.

Except for the ones that don't. There are kids in your poor country right now who have rickets. Rickets ffs.

How thin does that thread need to be?

Schweetcorn0000 · 04/02/2019 21:04

I’m an 80’s child from Merseyside. It was grim. The effects of the 80’s scarred many communities in this country and many have never gotten back on their feet. I wonder if it will take another 40 years to see the U.K. get back on its feet after this, and what will become of communities that are just about coping now. I’ve lost my sense of humour about Brexit. It’s an absolute shambles, I’d like to see Cameron braught to account. The U.K. is a laughing stock at the moment it’s shameful

Paradyning · 04/02/2019 21:14

I'm guessing OP you don't have a child that might die if drug supplies are interrupted. Lucky you.

Doubletrouble99 · 05/02/2019 12:08

Well it doesn't sound like deliveries will be held up at all according to Customs and Excise Paradyning, so we can forget all the scare mongering about medicines and food shortages.

An open borders policy is hardly a great idea is it? we are putting the onus on the French and Dutch to check lorries etc (who have no interest to do so) and is a smugglers charter as well as making the collection of tax more difficult and hence more evasion.

This is just a fucking farce.

SalrycLuxx · 05/02/2019 12:45

2016: “We will have control of our borders”

2019: “we will waive any bugger through excuse the civil service has worked out the experts know their business and we’re up shit creek otherwise”

longwayoff · 05/02/2019 12:48

Yes. BSE burgers as we know them. Keep those bre xity fingers crossed.

Doubletrouble99 · 05/02/2019 12:56

Jasjas - what exactly is going to be smuggled to the UK from the EU that wouldn't have been smuggled before?

PerverseConverse · 05/02/2019 12:56

Yeah it's all sorted now. Panic over.

PoffleWaffle · 05/02/2019 12:59

Yes. BSE burgers as we know them.

Why would burgers have BSE post brexit?

Helmetbymidnight · 05/02/2019 13:03

"Take control of our borders."

"Don't have checks on the borders."

Wow. These people are incredibly...confused.

Peregrina · 05/02/2019 13:42

2016: “We will have control of our borders”
2019: WELCOME SMUGGLERS ONE AND ALL

What would be smuggled - people, dodgy goods, illegal drugs, firearms...

jasjas1973 · 05/02/2019 13:50

Do you think it is making the country more secure or not? We ve made the UK an open door, which is why the Govt has decided a review within 3months, they are worried too but have no alternative.

Customs declarations filled out 2 hours beforehand and VAT paid up to a month later.... (if at all)

It's hardly taking back control is it?

Doubletrouble99 · 05/02/2019 16:05

So no different to now then Peregrina!

We need time to change systems and not muck everyone about so I really see nothing wrong with this idea.

longwayoff · 05/02/2019 16:47

BSE burgers were being eaten unknowingly throughout the 80s. Which may account for a lot, as another poster has remarked.

jasjas1973 · 05/02/2019 16:55

All being made up on the back of fag packet as we go along feeling our way in the dark.

As you voted to Leave, its hardly surprising you've given this "idea" your support, with zero thought for the consequences (much like your vote) - if it were such a brilliant idea, countries throughout the world would do with without customs checks, my aren't we ground breakers!

BreakWindandFire · 05/02/2019 16:58

Just because the UK has decided checks won't be carried out on goods coming in, (hello drug dealers and human traffikers!) France will still have a legal obligation to treat goods attempting to leave our shores as 3rd country imports.

So exports are buggered then.
