I survived 1980's recession as a kid, I'm sure I'll survive this

In fairness, my mother couldn't cope with not having potatoes, so heard rice was cheap, which we had religiously.
2 Yellow pack burgers, frozen peas, rice and gravy!!!!

I was very skinny for a few years lol.

You've 2 months to Brexit. Some of you don't seem to have accepted that.

What gives me hope is the numbers of men who mixed Asbestos for pipe lagging in Devonport Dockyard, yet survived to sire children without Mesothelioma.

Have courage! we will survive and repopulate the wreck that is Europe.

LadyandGent · 31/01/2019 22:25

I think some people think that Brexit won't happen. It's funny to read how in denial you all are about this.

It's happening - you've got 2 months.

Why? Why was this voted for? Because of successive Tory Leadership. And who voted to leave? Tory voters!

It's amusing in a way, to watch how the mighty have fallen. But if you put a bunch of privileged idiotic blustering fools in charge of a government, this is what happens.

Who do you think is in denial?

Cheekysquirrel · 31/01/2019 22:34

My MiL is looking forward to no deal brexit.
She voted to leave.
She wants a return to the ‘good old days.’
She thinks people have it ‘too easy’ and it’ll be good for them to go back to not being able to get certain foods and medicines.

She is 81 and extremely wealthy.

She will probably not have to deal with the implications of No Deal Brexit.

JurassicGirl · 31/01/2019 22:36

Our family lost our home in the 80s - it sucked.

My parents were & still are amazing & it's only as an adult that I learned how bad things had been. My poor parents (excuse the pun) had to go to court for non payment of poll tax & had to publically go bankrupt. We moved from a 3 bed semi in a lovely area to a TINY 2 bed terraced house in the middle of a run down town.

I really hope this doesn't happen to my children.

lonelyplanetmum · 31/01/2019 22:38

Unless she can't get nursing care or a Carer because even more such workers have left for more welcoming places with a stronger currency.

Cheekysquirrel · 31/01/2019 22:56

Ahhh but she’s a millionaire.
I’m fairly sure she would get care somewhere. She will be able to pay more for it than most.

ElyElyOy · 31/01/2019 23:15

My great grandad survived the trenches - lets have another one of those too then Wink

(well he survived for a bit, eventually he died from his injuries but no one gave a shit about that)

Iflyaway · 31/01/2019 23:21

OP, you are in some kind of time-warp.

Where was China and India in the 80's? Certainly not global players like today.

We live in a globalised world now.

Wake up and smell the coffee, as the saying goes.

Iflyaway · 31/01/2019 23:23

Oh, and all the coffee around in the 80's in Britain was crap instant from what I remember. And no shops to get a lovely cappuccino take-away on the way to work!

jasjas1973 · 31/01/2019 23:25

The UK isn't about to become the next China or India, who have some very serious human rights issues.

Being in the EU and in a strong alliance gives us a voice against these totalitarian regimes, outside? who knows.

LadyandGent · 31/01/2019 23:40

Cheeqysquirrel, your mother is typical. I'm alright Jack. So let's vote leave.
You, as her daughter, work for a multinational. Dependent on Europe.. So let's vote REMAIN!
The guy about to lose his job because he can't undercut foreign labour, he voted Leave. Because he can't compete with the prices the Romanians are willing to work for..

17 million people didn't go into a ballot box, close their eyes and then pick something. 17 million people have reasons..

And I'm sorry, but the only one's expressing concern about Brexit are high earners.
You don't get a poor fucker on UC bleating about Brexit? Once he can afford his leccy, a few pot noodles, pints down the local watching the footy, that's all he cares about.

OhTheRoses · 31/01/2019 23:53

I remember the 80's. Bought a flat with a 2.5 income mortgage. In London. Got brilliant jobs without a degree.

The 70s led to the UK having to beg from the IMF due to havoc labour had wrought.

DH's dad was made redundant in the 80s aged 55 and got a gold plated pension. He never had to work again.

Brexit Schmexit. Life will go on. As soon as we are out others will follow. Why else do you think Europe are making it so difficult.

Henny Penny the sky will not fall in.

lonelyplanetmum · 31/01/2019 23:57

Europe are making it so difficult.

The EU are not making it difficult, the government's red lines are.

Scandaloso · 01/02/2019 00:01

Total bollocks.

i'm not a high earner and I'm very much concerned.

You don't get a poor fucker on UC bleating about Brexit? Once he can afford his leccy, a few pot noodles, pints down the local watching the footy, that's all he cares about.

Patronising toss.

Frequency · 01/02/2019 00:01

But he's not going to be able to afford it anymore. Why do people not understand this? The poorest are going to be the hardest hit. And also, no. That is categorically not all UC claimants want. They want to be able to afford to feed themselves and their children properly. They don't want fucking pot noodles.

Scandaloso · 01/02/2019 00:03

As soon as we are out others will follow. Why else do you think Europe are making it so difficult.

With witless comments like this it's no wonder the country is sliding into the toilet. So uninformed.

lonelyplanetmum · 01/02/2019 00:07

As soon as we are out others will follow

Really ? @@@ (Tumbleweeds drifting across - Hmmmm waits....no signs of others following just yet.)

Having seen our economy plummet from 5 th place and businesses leaving in a frenzy and the pound having fallen? I guess some Sado masochistic country may follow?

They're just rabbiting a line their high priest Nigel Farage is so fond of.

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 00:12

The joy of growing up in the 80s, especially during the troubles. I’m so glad that the Brexit bunch are really looking forward to the bombs and bullets again. Though I have a sneaking suspicion that the terrorists may be slightly pissed of with the UK for fucking up the good Friday agreement, and that they might take the new troubles to their doorstep.

twattymctwatterson · 01/02/2019 01:34

ive survived worse. We were exceptionally poor in the 80s too. You do realise a no deal Brexit will be worse? Probably a lot worse

Quietrebel · 01/02/2019 04:51

@cheekysquirrel

Your mil sounds like a toxic and sadistic hypocrite.

Quietrebel · 01/02/2019 04:53

Well, here's hoping Wetherspoons is charitable and feeds them for free then eh?
