Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

Tinned potatoes make a great Spanish omelette. Could be a good use of frozen eggs

cloudtree · 28/01/2019 19:48

In theory vaseline on eggs might make them last a bit longer. when they're laid they have a layer of mucus like stuff on them (although its dried) and leaving that on (ie not washing the egg) makes the egg last longer because it prevents the air from permeating through the shell. The vaseline would in theory do the same thing.

falcon5 · 28/01/2019 19:52

@cloudtree that's what I thought! I asked if they were american eggs because my DM told me Mericans had to keep eggs in the fridge because they washed them but I didn't explain that and I think she just thought I was a bit mad. But basically it won't make any difference to poo covered hedge eggs :)

OddBoots · 28/01/2019 19:55

Tinned potatoes are fab done in an air fryer.

prettybird · 28/01/2019 19:55

Iirc, UK eggs are not washed (unlike American eggs) and therefore last longer. I read somewhere that the only reason we refrigerte them is because of the habits that the Americans wash their eggs and so wash away the eggs natural protective coating. They need to wash them because the hens are kept in such unsanitary conditions hence the chlorine washing for chicken meat Sad - the joys that we have to look forward to Angry

cloudtree · 28/01/2019 19:56

It might help if once you washed the poo off you then vaseline them. Worth a go.

Mine are always muddy at this time of year because the chooks seem to prefer laying in an old tree stump in the area they free range in to laying in the nesting box, so they need washing as soon as they're brought in. As a result they don't last as long.

cloudtree · 28/01/2019 20:09

Just to remind everyone you should be chitting your first early potatoes now ready for planting in about 3 weeks.

Flowerypig · 28/01/2019 20:10

I read someone mentioned shelf stable primula cheese spread earlier ( for their kids party tea, I think) which kind of these are the shelf stable please? In my Tesco’s they’re all in tubes in the fridge! Would love to get a stash of these in the cupboard. Love a primula pasta bake!

StoorieHoose · 28/01/2019 20:15

@cloudtree do you have any potato varieties you recommend? home Bargains has seed potatoes in apparently - I’m off there tomorrow and I’ve kept my egg boxes to chit them

cloudtree · 28/01/2019 20:16

Homebargains have the shelf stable primula tubes and the 200g shelf stable tubs.

Scandaloso · 28/01/2019 20:18

Eggs last far longer than the date on the box says. As mentioned upthread UK farming regulations mean ours are far less likely (extremely unlikely) to carry salmonella.

cloudtree · 28/01/2019 20:19

I usually have some duke of york stooriehoose but I tend to just pick up whatever is available. I also have some sprouting in the garage from last years crop which I'm also going to plant out.

StoorieHoose · 28/01/2019 20:22

Thanks cloudtree. I left it too late last year so determined to get some going this year

cloudtree · 28/01/2019 20:25

potatoes are good bang for your buck. I'm always astonished how one little potato stuck into the ground creates dozens more so quickly.

mum2jakie · 28/01/2019 20:29

Probably a daft question but do you need to plant actual seed potatoes? Would a sprouting potato be suitable for planting at home?

blibblibs · 28/01/2019 20:33

I've just tied up the understairs cupboard and have 5 bottles of baileys, we'll the cheap Aldi stuff, so I reckon I'm good to go Grin

cloudtree · 28/01/2019 20:33

You can just plant a sprouting potato yes. You might not have as good a success rate particularly since potatoes are split into different varieties, first early, second early and main crop which are planted at different times. You should currently be chitting first early varieties.

But i am planting out some potatoes from the garden which I forgot about and which are sprouting like crazy in the garage. They weren't first earlies but will just take longer to produce anything.

cloudtree · 28/01/2019 20:35

seed potatoes are cheap though and far more likely to produce.

RedToothBrush · 28/01/2019 20:36

One of the issues I'm finding in trying to cook seasonal is just how many recipes require fresh diary (milk, cream, butter, eggs, yoghurt).

I'm currently trying to learn a few tricks now, but I admit to be struggling with my knowledge and skills.

I might say though, that I am very much enjoying roasted kale as a healthy alternative to crisps. Much reduced guilt, though I may need to go a little easier on the oil. Paprika is better than too much salt too.

Flowerypig · 28/01/2019 20:36

Thanks @cloudtree i’ll check there tomorrow!

TheElementsSong · 28/01/2019 20:39

I'll get some seed potatoes this weekend.

falcon5 · 28/01/2019 20:39

Ah @redtoothbrush someone else posted about making soft cheese with dried milk... I've not tried it yet though

UnnecessaryFennel · 28/01/2019 21:00

I love the Aldi Bailey's - discovered it this Christmas and haven't looked back Grin will definitely have to stock up a bit though.

A mate has recommended the boxes of Who Gives a Crap loo roll - any thoughts? About 40 rolls to a box - I reckon if I buy one and just put it away I won't be tempted to run it down before B-Day, which is what's happening with lots of the other bits and bobs I've bought.

Need candles and batteries. And steamed puddings.

PerverseConverse · 28/01/2019 21:07

Asda own brand Baileys is as nice as Aldi. £3.85 I think. It's lovely.

I wonder how Aldi and Lidl will be affected by brexit?
