Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

We’ve just been talking tinned potatoes. I’m not sure but DH seems to think they’d do an OK bubble and squeak with other veg.

StoorieHoose · 28/01/2019 19:20

I have tinned potatoes I’m sure they will be okay in a stew with lots of gravy

Jens303 · 28/01/2019 19:21

Whatdoiwanttohear - perhaps when the nastiness stops but unfortunately I can’t actually see that happening

bellinisurge · 28/01/2019 19:21

Idaho mash. There's a buttery mash one, a cheesy one and a gratin one.

TheElementsSong · 28/01/2019 19:22

Idahoan packer mash is nicer than Smash. You can get lots of different varieties - cheesy, buttery, roasted garlic

Thanks Stoorie I'll have a look out for it on my next supermarket shop.

cloudtree · 28/01/2019 19:22

I have a few packs of the idahoan mash I have the cheddar one, the garlic one, the buttery and the cheddar and bacon. They were on offer in tesco last week so they might still be. They also do a dauphinoise which is sliced of potato in a sauce.

I have found that the tinned potatoes cooked in the oven like roast potatoes go down just as well as potato wedges with the DC. They crisp up really nicely.

TheElementsSong · 28/01/2019 19:23

Oh thanks bellini too!

cloudtree · 28/01/2019 19:23

Jesn we love you. come and talk about tinned potatoes and steamed syrup puddings.

cloudtree · 28/01/2019 19:23

Jens even

AutumnCrow · 28/01/2019 19:23

When I was a student my Sunday dinner was tinned mince, tinned tomatoes and some boiled pasta & mixed herbs.

My older sister did a version with tinned spaghetti and tinned mushrooms.

(Back in the days of rubbish Baby Belling hot plates!)

TheElementsSong · 28/01/2019 19:24

DH is going to be really Hmm about tinned potatoes and instant mash Grin

cloudtree · 28/01/2019 19:24

I seem to have lost the ability to type after half a glass of wine!

Whatdoiwanttohear · 28/01/2019 19:26

Passes a tambourine to Jen's

AutumnCrow · 28/01/2019 19:26

I love Jens too Flowers

I also love sponge pudding and if having some in my cupboard makes me feel a little bit more in charge of things, then so be it. And I love spag bol.

bellinisurge · 28/01/2019 19:26

I have sacrificed some of my Idaho mash for the starter pack I am putting together for my head in the sand/I must not think bad thoughts Remain voting in-laws. And one of my precious tubs of Nido powdered milk. My dh drew the line at our steamed pudding stash and said they could bloody well get their own.

Screamish · 28/01/2019 19:27

I love tinned potatoes sliced and fried with some chopped up bacon and an onion. They go lovely and crispy.

Whatdoiwanttohear · 28/01/2019 19:27

I'm going to crack open the leftover Christmas Bailey's and share it - half a thimbleful each which is fine as will be what we need to get used to soon enough

PerverseConverse · 28/01/2019 19:28

Bolognese with potato wedges (both homemade) are gorgeous together. I make the bolognese with quorn, chopped tomatoes, herbs, chilli. Quick and easy and delicious.

It probably wouldn't work in a shortage, but tinned potatoes, sliced softened with some onion, half a dozen eggs flavoured to taste with whatever herbs etc poured over, microwave @ 10-20 mins (my microwave is on the fritz) and it's a great meal, really filling.

AutumnCrow · 28/01/2019 19:34

You can freeze eggs (library style). Don't whisk them, just fork them a bit to break the yolk.

Freezer bags are washable & reusable, too. My granny used to use bread wrappers / bags and clothes pegs.

prettybird · 28/01/2019 19:35

Unfortunately, I'm following the MN HFLC Boot Camp - so all the carbs like potatoes, pasta, noodles and rice are out of bounds for me Shock

Still stockpiling them though for dh (and ds when he is back for Easter and the summer) canned tomatoes, tuna, soups, baked beans and have a healthily stocked freezer (and am starting to put things into the freezer in the garage which doesn't work very well too).

I need to remember to order in extra supplies of my daily contact lenses - I noticed that they come from Ireland.

Graphista · 28/01/2019 19:42

"To get back on the rails of the actual topic, what do we think about tinned potatoes?" As I said they're perfect for potato salad (I do Mayo, sweetcorn & parsley), also for slicing & frying, have with eggs, bacon... Anything you'd have in a fry up. Also bubble & squeak suitable. They also work fab in slow cooker in casseroles. And of course in stovies!

Instant mash we just get supermarket own brand, though dd would say she prefers smash I don't notice a difference. Season and add butter/milk/Mayo according to preference. Even a little pesto sauce can be nice. I've been known to make up instant mash, heat baked beans up, add beans & grated cheddar to the jug I've made the mash in, mix in gently - 5 min Cba dinner. Sounds gruesome its lush!

Dd likes it best with garlic salt, black pepper & butter.

falcon5 · 28/01/2019 19:43

Hmm I'm going to freeze a few eggs but...Do I remember someone talking about vaselining eggs to keep them fresh. Also has anyone actually had dried egg powder? I have enough Nido dried milk to sink a ship but I've always used that. Dried egg seems a bit more tricky.

StoorieHoose · 28/01/2019 19:44

I’m a traitor to the Scottish race but stovies gie me the boak

AutumnCrow · 28/01/2019 19:44

Smash, tinned vegetable soup and cider. Camping stove, Reading Festival, late 1970s. Awesome.
