Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

Personally I think the who gives a crap is a good ethical option for a different time. Home bargains does 18 rolls for 4.99 which frees up cash for other things (or more toilet roll)

PerverseConverse · 28/01/2019 21:19

@cloudtree what's the quality like though? I'm fussy when it comes to loo roll. Can't stand thin, cheap stuff.

Aldi, especially, has built up good relationships with British farmers. Hopefully they will keep the supply chain going.

Anymom · 28/01/2019 21:30

Hi, op here from the original thread. Thanks for setting up a new thread 🙂 just about to go back and read the rest of the last thread and start of this one. Haven't been able to keep up as have been busy - - stockpiling-- working 😊

cloudtree · 28/01/2019 21:39

cloudtree what's the quality like though? Nicky is very good. Soft and thick and smells slightly of baby lotion.

Just to keep everyone up to speed with the political situation, this afternoon, the health secretary Matt Hancock told a Parliamentary committee that “medicines will be prioritised [over food] in the event of a no-deal Brexit”

The food shortages described by the retailers were based on 13% of the usual volume of food imports actually getting across the Channel after Brexit. If medicines are to be prioritised, then this means that other goods, including food, will be less of a priority and therefore even less than 13% of food will get through.

MI5’s maxim is that society is “four meals away from anarchy”. In other words, the security agency believes that Britain could be quickly reduced to large-scale disorder, including looting and rioting in the event of a catastrophe that stops the supply of food.

So people with a sensible back-up supply they've obtained in January are being responsible.

Especially if they pass it on elsewhere e.g. to food banks if not needed in April / May.

Catquest1 · 28/01/2019 22:03

Or my food bills are going to be less for a few months!

I dont think it hurts to be prepared - Ive only bought stuff we would use regularly. And with snow forecast this week my store might undergo a little test

Scandaloso · 28/01/2019 22:05

God, it's utterly bonkers that they're going ahead with this massive act of self-harm. For no real purpose.

The Brexit seminars they're going to teach in 50 years time will basically be titled 'Brexit: WTF'.

Bluelonerose · 28/01/2019 22:13

So I went to Aldi to get a few bit to stock up. I feel so far behind. We normally only have tuna, beans, tomatoes and sweet corn in tins so I'm not really sure what I need.

I have
4 tins chick peas
8 tins tomatoes
4 tins sweet corn
4 bags plain flour
1 500g bag pasta
1 500g basmati rice
4 dried milk
18 loo rolls
1 oj and

24 KitKat chunkys not for sharing with dh or dc

Lwmommy · 28/01/2019 22:46

Just spent a couple of hours listing all my stock with use by dates.

I have LOTS of
pasta and pasta sauce
sweet stuff
instant mash in a variety of flavoURs
Rice in a variety of flavours
Oils
Vinegars
Seasonings
Toiletries
Batteries

I need more:
Protein - tinned and frozen
Fruit - tinned
Veg - tinned
Loo roll
Flour - self raising
Yeast

Hello, Anymom!
Has anyone tried primula on digestive biscuits?! We used to love it on venture camp in the 90’s. Great when up a mountain in the rain

RedToothBrush · 28/01/2019 23:06

The Mirror, Metro and Guardian are interesting reading tonight.

I have to say, that the 'Beast From the East II' has the potential to come at the exact wrong time, in which shelves get cleared because of problems with the weather and everyone then freaks out completely.

No-Deal Brexit Food Price Spike Could Cause 12,000 UK Deaths, Study Warns
Experts say more expensive fruit and veg may push up number of fatal heart attacks and strokes.

"The least disruptive scenario modelled, which assumes a free-trading agreement with the EU and half of non-EU fruit and veg importers, could increase coronary heart disease and stroke deaths by approximately 0.3% (1,360 deaths) and 1.0% (2,740 deaths) respectively.”

About solving the obseity crisis...

Graphista · 28/01/2019 23:52

That's least disruptive.

That's also only considering heart attack/stroke

There's any number of other conditions with similarly potentially deadly effects due to such a rapid and unhealthy change in diet.

I believe there's around 4 million insulin dependent diabetics for starters!

bellinisurge · 29/01/2019 06:15

@RosemarysBush cheese on digestives is the temptation of Satan. And I love it.

Rhubarbisevil · 29/01/2019 06:42

Green beans can be lightly blanched before freezing.

ZigZagZombie · 29/01/2019 07:35

I use Who Gives a Crap. It isn't as "pretty" as Andrex double-quilted puppy-friendly stuff, but:

  1. It lasts for fuckin-ever! I bought a box in October and it's still going strong - I've just bought another box + kitchen roll and I think it'll do us until the end of summer whereas (family of 3) we were getting through 8 rolls a week. So it does work out cheaper.

  2. It's ethical of course - and prettily wrapped in coloured paper for bathroom storage.

  3. Bathrooms are dust-free. Modern rolls shed tiny fibres which is why the top of the loo roll holder is always dusty and you get fluffy dust-balls on the floor behind the toilet. This stuff doesn't shed which I love.

  4. It always flushes. I've got small kids and sometimes they can put too much down and modern eco toilets don't have a very powerful flush (not enough bloody water). This stuff doesn't block pipes.

Someone was asking about yoghurt. I make my own - I have a yoghurt maker but apparently you can do it in the slow cooker. You need shop stuff for the first batch to start it and you will probably get 3-4 subsequent batches from the stuff you make before it gets too watery and weird. So I also have little culture packets I got from amazon.

ZigZagZombie · 29/01/2019 07:37

PS who gives a crap - I personally think it's more absorbent - not quite sure how I can show this to you without getting beakers full of ad-ready blue wee! Grin I'm looking forward to trying the kitchen roll (what a tragically sad life I lead... ) but I've just found more normal stuff in the kitchen cupboard I'll use up first.

cloudtree · 29/01/2019 07:46

There are various offers on atm on easiyo. Prices for the maker have gone up in general (I bought my starter set about 6 months ago with two sachets of yoghurt powder for £6 and they're now more than double that). But the benefit of easiyo is that once you have the maker you only need the sachet and water. Milk not required. A sachet makes a kilo of yoghurt.

Sachets in The Range for 1.99

Mistigri · 29/01/2019 07:57

If you want to make yoghurt get an instant pot or similar, foolproof for yoghurt-making and does a lot more than just make yoghurt.

LumpsMum · 29/01/2019 07:59

Late to this thread (as usual when I do comment Grin ), but funnily enough my DH usually applies the “don’t worry, it will all work out” rule to anything. I asked how he felt about me having started a Brexit cupboard, with essential bits and bobs that I plan to add a few things to everytime I shop. I was expecting a right piss take and being mocked. It has unsettled me more than I care to admit that he reckons it’s the most sensible thing.
I’m German, so not only do I fear being turfed out, but I also like food, so I’ll keep adding to my stash. It won’t go to waste. Grin

I laugh when people say “we’ll pull together”, or “we’ll go back to eating seasonally” etc. Is that really what Brexiteers wanted? Having their choices potentially drastically reduced? This is a tiny island in a world ever more connected.
I don’t get how going back to how things were decades ago is better? It just won’t work... I’ve literally been continuously baffled since the leaving vote Confused 🤣🤣🤣

cloudtree · 29/01/2019 08:10

I have an instant pot and yes it does make yoghurt but its expensive to buy the instant pot (on offer atm but still £100) and you need milk which takes a lot of space to store and even UHT only has a date of about 7 months ahead.

i think easiyo is a good option. its relatively cheap (even with the increased prices its less than £15) and the sachets are very easy to store. Easiyo often sell sachets for £1 with short dates (which are still fine to use for a long time.)

I'm not dismissing using the instant pot if you already have one and lots of space to store milk.

Youcantscaremeihavechildren · 29/01/2019 08:18

I'm gradually building my brexit cupboard, also because we got cut off for 3 days in the snow last year, I ran out of wine!
Question though, should we prep regardless of how things are looking... If they get the unicorn poop WA through, so we don't have no deal, will there still be disruptions? I kind of feel like there will...

Mistigri · 29/01/2019 08:23

If the WA is ratified by both sides there will be a transition which secures "frictionless" trade until the end of 2020. It may just move the cliff edge of course.
