Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

@ElenadeClermont

I think you can buy frozen melon balls, so why not? I live with the idea you can freeze most things - possibly with the exception of lettuce. One time I defrosted my chest freezer I found a few shrivelled up odd lemons and limes and satsumas knocking about in the bottom. I scrubbed them, skins and all, chopped them up and the combined off-the-cuff marmalade I made was definitely reminiscent of Cooper's Oxford. Only better Smile

Our red lentil Dahl is cooking but am not sure at all that anyone will like it. Fussy lot mine. I've never had it either but willing to give it a go.

Melon is mostly water isn't it? So I'm sure it's fine to freeze. Most fruits freeze well and even if they don't look as pretty as there pre-frozen selves, they still taste great.

Scandaloso · 31/01/2019 16:47

Ok, the lentil Dahl was not a disaster. DD1 has 3 helpings! Ds hated it, DD2 ate a tiny amount. I liked it but want to add spuds and a little pineapple juice. So quite pleased that half of the household have a cheap and cheerful dish they like of which the brexit box holds supplies.

Still topping up a couple of items at a time:

Ready rice (great fried up with whatever is to hand), tampons and falafel mix (which just needs water.) Small steps!

PerverseConverse · 31/01/2019 18:41

@mum2jakie thought you were frying up tampons for a minute there!! Grin

Let's hope it doesn't come to that!

mum2jakie · 31/01/2019 18:44

Lol!!! Surely soup rather than fry up?!!! Grin

mum2jakie · 31/01/2019 18:47

When we're at that stage we know the shit really has hit the fan!!!

I'm nearly menopausal, so sanitary stuff isn't a priority... but what if my 10 year old starts? (She's got premature adrenarche so it will be hard to spot signs real puberty is coming). I have a handful of assorted pads but I'm more at the TENA stage (after a long cold&cough).

I got my first long-life milk cartons today. I'd get those anyway with snow forecast. I also got a huge plastic tub (buy2for offer and I needed the other for DD1's homework) which I'm going to try in the remaining loft space loft conversion as all storage areas in the house are filled with my yarn.

We have a woodburner and thanks to DH getting a bargain woodpile on ebay last spring, should be good to heat the whole of our small town for the foreseeable. Have enough for this winter under cover and two small wooden full of chopped pieces. The drive alongside the house is a woodyard.

So I started our stash today, plan to add to it over the next month or so. It is for the most part stuff we would use anyway, it’s just off touching limits for now!

12 tins of soup
6 tins beans and sausage
4 tins spaghetti hoops
4 tins sweetcorn
2 tins of potatoes
2 tins of peaches
2 tins of pears
2 apple pie filling
3 pasta n sauce
2 2kg bags of pasta

It’s a start I guess, and also people clearly are doing this because the tinned veg and fruit sections were just decimated!

elfycat · 31/01/2019 19:19

Did you notice in your supermarket how all the prepper stuff is handily on the ends of aisles?

Tomorrow I am going to fill the car up with diesel, and keep it between 3/4 and full. I need to add more chocolate as DD2 just found the bar in the bag that needs putting away.

Nacreous · 31/01/2019 19:43

NHS scares me too: I work with the people planning it and still haven't had a straight answer about what exactly they are doing to prevent shortages. They've told GPs in our area not to prescribe extra but the GPs don't know what's being done either, and nodded emphatically when I pointed out that in an absence of an actual plan that had been publicised and made sense, surely no one would punt their health on that.

Murinae · 31/01/2019 19:48

We are not stockpiling we are “forward buying”

ThePurpleFairy · 31/01/2019 19:54

Yep tinned fruit was on the ends and tinned hotdogs, stew etc - didn’t even bother trying to get any of that, there was just nothing left.

Anybody got recommendations where to buy frozen veg (onions, peppers etc?). Iceland seems the obvious choice, I’ve had smaller bags of the stuff delivered from Ocado but it’s pretty expensive (£2.99 for a small bag of sliced peppers Shock)

Myusernameismud · 31/01/2019 19:58

@thepurplefairy is there a farm foods near you? They sell every kind of frozen fruit and vegetable you could imagine

TheWoollybacksWife · 31/01/2019 19:58

Tesco do slightly smaller bags of frozen veg (500g vs 600g at Ocado) for £1.

Murinae · 31/01/2019 19:58

I am just adding stuff to my deliveries but there were no tinned mandarins left to order from Tesco last week they were completely out of stock

Scandaloso · 31/01/2019 19:58

Purple, Farmfoods put a flyer through my door today and they are selling 5 bags of frozen veg (600g) for a £4. And 3 bags of frozen fruit for £5. If there's one near you it's worth a look.

cloudtree · 31/01/2019 20:02

69p for bags of frozen veg in Lidl

Member745520 · 31/01/2019 20:03

@ThePurpleFairy

I find my local Iceland very good for frozen veg - peppers, spinach (I buy lots of spinach), brussels sprouts, whole fine green beans are my staples, sometimes chopped onions from there. Cheaper than other supermarkets too. Was wishing I had a larger freezer!

TheElementsSong · 31/01/2019 20:10

^^

Have you all noticed that the drive-by anti-prepping empty-slogan-spritzers seem to have dried up in the past few days? I think they've been scared away from the "forward purchasing" "buffering" threads.

I'm still seeing the usual panic-buying-causing-shortages and other well-worn tropes on other threads, so I guess they're trying to keep up the narrative but aimed at more unsuspecting victims, and trying to stay under bellini's radar Grin

ThePurpleFairy · 31/01/2019 20:16

Thanks all, I have Farmoods, Iceland and a Lidl in the vicinity so will check all of them out Smile
