The Brexit Cupboard Part 2

Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

Tell him price rises are predicted.

UnnecessaryFennel · 30/01/2019 19:46

Autumn, that's it exactly. That's how I 'sold' it to him - 'I'm sure it'll all be fine (cough cough) but I'd rather be prepared for something that doesn't happen than unprepared for something that does.' He seemed to understand that.

Although, I'm sure the recent stockpiling articles in the DM helped my cause a bit too...

UnnecessaryFennel · 30/01/2019 19:49

Thing is, blue if it's all fine, that's great. You're not buying perishables, I assume, so all that will happen is that you'll slowly work your way through your stash. Or donate to the foodbank, because even in the Sunlit Uplands that need isn't going away any time soon. Surely he would get that?

It is hard though, when your loved ones aren't on board.

ElenadeClermont · 30/01/2019 20:03

Bluelonerose Underbed storage is a great idea! Thanks.

I am trying to force DH to order extra contact lenses.

TheElementsSong · 30/01/2019 20:03

Flowers to everyone who is trying to prepare in the face of family opposition. I'm very grateful that DH is fully on board.

Perhaps it makes a difference that we weren't starting from Ground Zero, we've always menu-planned/batch-cooked, and kept eyes open for things on offer so it didn't feel like imposing a huge change in behaviour?

Way back in 2016, we noticed certain things going up in price (and it seemed obvious to us that the weak £ meant prices weren't going to go down anytime soon). So then we started ramping up our bulk-offer-buying and getting more disciplined with menu-planning and batch-cooking, and it's just carried on from there.

AutumnCrow · 30/01/2019 20:30

I have one relative who seems to be under the impression that if there are shortages, the Council will drive round to his house with a box of nappies and some groceries 'Well they'll just have to, won't they? I pay my council tax.'

I ought to save his pronouncements into a journal. When Manly Entitlement Met Brexit

Grinchly · 30/01/2019 20:39

Just another tip.

If you are more on the savoury than sweet, get some ( middle class mumsnetter foodie alert) umami paste.

Ocado deliver it.adds instant intense flavour to ancient freezer burned mince also great in prawn cocktail sauce for those children of the 70s

And used properly, helps any stew without the many herbs and spices thing.

crosstalk · 30/01/2019 20:42

Ok, i'm solo (DCs elsewhere) with dog. DDog is now properly stashed with food for 2 months. I can always eat him if times get really hard. Even if I'm vegetarian. i'm more worried about getting snowed in than Brexit.

However I've just moved from a large garden with huge vegetable patch to a concrete garden. So (and i would have done anyway) I'm just investing in potato growing bags and begging compost/filching earth. I'll sow some earlies, some mids and some lates. I'm also doing bush beans, tomatoes and courgettes. However we're talking June for any of these. won't have room for many flowers but marigolds and courgettes work well together. .

Don't forget nettles instead of spinach if you're semi urban or rural - high in lots of trace stuff and vitamins and delicious, even raw if chopped fine..

My main concern now I'm semi urban is being down to one source of cooking fuel. Electric. So I do plan to go out and get a camping stove and fuel for it. When everything went off in my previous home I had a wood stove and cooked everything on it.

Bluelonerose · 30/01/2019 20:59

I'm just worried in 10 years im going to find something that I've stashed and forgotten about.
Then I'll start a thread saying there's a funky smell in my house but don't know what Grin

bellinisurge · 30/01/2019 21:10

Ah but @Bluelonerose , if it's shelf stable it may well still be edible- like those tins of things they find from WWII.
Just don't invite me round for tea that day Grin

Graphista · 30/01/2019 21:17

Had to take a step back for a day or so as the subject was increasing my anxiety and I had other things going on that were doing so too.

On the meds front - spoke to a PSYCHIATRIST today and even at that level they're not getting told what the contingency plans are! And the way I was answered it certainly isn't a case of not asking. Mum says dads CONSULTANT same. I think even higher ranking Drs Are getting concerned now but NO BLOODY ANSWERS. They're just being told "it's in hand" apparently.

Seriously if you voted these clowns in shame on you!

Bought just 6 eggs this week, if we don't use them by say 2 days before best before date (and I'm someone who will happily check in water for freshness after best before date) then I will experiment with freezing. I have freezer bags in as use them for leftovers anyway. Need a new marker pen though.

I wouldn't mind slightly rubbery to be honest it's runny eggs turn my stomach, I don't mind a runny yolk but a runny White bleuch

I've cake mix in (I don't bake often enough to have flour etc in) but guess what...just add eggs so frozen eggs could be ideal.

I've had a d'oh! Moment in that I've been stocking up my snacks and drinks... But not dds. In my defence she's hardly home between work & the boyfriend so they last AGES but I need to get on that - a hangry premenstrual 18 yr old in a house with no carbs is NOT fun!

"AsdA do a packet soya mince which I have added to the cupboard. Still no tinned potatoes....." As a veggie that's reminded me - dried veggie mixes! Sainsburys do granose soya mince, falafel mix and sausage mix (I used to love this).

AutumnCrow · 30/01/2019 21:48

Graphista I was at a 'super' hospital yesterday for some diagnostic stuff and getting booked for an, MRI in a major department. Poss more surgery ahead.

Not a single consultant, nurse or other HCP knew how the hospital was being prepared by the Trust for leaving the EU. It's all very 'wing and a prayer' stuff.

That's what really worries me. And it worries me on behalf of others too.

Bluelonerose · 30/01/2019 21:48

@bellinisurge Grin

PerverseConverse · 30/01/2019 21:52

No one seems to know anything but then if the government don't then no one else can either. Well, we know we are on our way to hell in a handbasket but apart from that...

My lentil soup from today is now flat packed on a baking tray in the freezer as per the library method. I need a bigger pan as one pan full makes 7 potions and it needs to make 8 as there's 4 of us. Still, it's a meal for the children in the freezer.

I have been stocking up but still feel woefully ill prepared. I can't get DP on board with the prepping and he seems to think that there's enough food in the UK to feed us all if we crash out without a deal and that everything will be fine.

We usually have both freezers crammed full of food and full cupboards anyway and I reckon we have enough food for about 3 weeks for me, DP and adult DD, but I want to get more.

I suffer with a serious mental health condition and have built up a 3 month supply of meds. DP thinks my freaking out about Brexit is paranoia on my part and that I'm becoming ill again, but reading the Brexit boards I think it's more a case of being prudent and I feel somewhat vindicated so thanks everyone!

PestymcPestFace · 30/01/2019 22:20

OddBoots thank you for the oat milk link.

I seem to have developed a milk allergy Sad and needed something cheap, cheerful and sustainable to go in tea. Honestly, now is not a good time for this.

AutumnCrow · 30/01/2019 22:26

Prince you sound very organised already.

I know it feels better to be on top of everything. That's what It is. Not paranoia - simply being on top of everything. In any other context people would be heaping praise on us!

NameChanger22 · 30/01/2019 23:32

I started prepping the day after the referendum, not for the apocalypse but for price rises. I decided to prep for the long-term. I started with all the stuff that can't go off - bin bags, toothbrushes etc, I sourced the cheapest ones I could and bought a 20 year supply. I never spent more on my shopping than I would have otherwise, I just cut back on luxury items and bought more essentials. I created a spreadsheet to keep track of what I had, what I needed and the cost of it. A year ago I started to buy things like rice, coffee, honey and other foods that last a very long time. I'm now in the final stage of buying things like UHT milk. I'm so glad I did this, lots of prices have already gone up significantly and lots of people seem to be panicking, plus its good to know I will probably never need to buy a toothbrush ever again.

I have predicted nearly everything that has happened with Brexit so far. I would love to be wrong about what happens next.

Scandaloso · 30/01/2019 23:38

It would stress me out to have a store of 20 years worth of stuff!

NameChanger22 · 30/01/2019 23:43

It's the opposite of stressful. It's not as much stuff as you would think either. We only use 12 bin bags a year, for example. We are not big consumers. In 20 years I can only imagine how much bin bags will cost, I bought mine very cheap.

MamaLovesMango · 31/01/2019 10:34

It's all very 'wing and a prayer' stuff.

That’s pretty much how we are working in the NHS anyway to be honest. Not just because of Brexit. I very clearly remember a time when Winter was a struggle but we’d get through and then it was a major struggle and we’d keep our fingers crossed and those of us that were religious would pray we’d get through it without major incident and intact and we did. We’d tell anyone who mattered we needed help to change it, to make the next Winter easier but nobody could would do anything and then one hard Winter (2015ish) just didn’t end and it still hasn’t ended. Now every day we’re working with our fingers crossed and praying we’ll get through each day. Brexit is going to add to it (already is) and make it worse but it’ll just be on top of the shit that was already there. And still, nobody can wants to do anything about it.

cloudtree · 31/01/2019 12:25

Very interesting radio programme today a little while ago with experts answering all sorts of questions about brexit. On the food prices issue the expert said that the customs duty would be around 18%. In addition there would be additional costs passed on re warehousing/storage, transportation etc that had had to be paid for etc. He was therefore saying that we should expect a minimum of a 20% price increase on most products (since they will spread some of it across products) once the supermarkets pass the costs on. He also said they will need to pass costs on quickly and so the prices are likely to be increased sooner rather than later.

ElenadeClermont · 31/01/2019 13:44

Do you think I could cut up and freeze cantaloupe melon? I have accidentally bought too much.Blush

bellinisurge · 31/01/2019 13:48

@ElenadeClermont could you make a smoothie (other fruit about) and freeze an unseasonal lolly?
All those bored with familiar with my prepper adventures in dehydration, know I would dehydrate itGrin. But that is not equipment you are required to get, just my thing.

ElenadeClermont · 31/01/2019 14:10

Thank you bellini.Flowers
Not sure where my blender is. You are probably right. DS wil never eat it reheated.
