Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

you are a very kind daughter Potential. Grin

I was lurking on the previous thread so I started half-heartedly putting a few tins aside and bought some UHT milk and was really glad I did as we had a screw up with the bank and were left with no money. We always have a well-stocked pantry but milk would have been a problem. Teen DS hates UHT milk but he can always learn to love it 😉

My biggest problem with prepping is that we are in a small flat and are bidding to move so don't want to have to cart a huge stash if we manage to get a place before Brexit but equally don't want 3 DC to go hungry if the worst happens.

unexpectedgifts · 30/01/2019 16:28

@AutumnCrow @cloudtree Thank you. I'll get stocked up with eggs.

It might make my M&S chopped ham (£1!) into a tasty quiche in hard times.

I'm freezing Aldi 1kg packs of mince into portions too. They are handy as they are blocks and take up little space in my freezer.

I'm freezing Aldi cheese in portions too for emergency pizza. Yum.

AutumnCrow · 30/01/2019 16:30

I suggested to DP that birthday gifts this year should be cheery-uppy food and drink, and that we buy it all in now. Adults = vodka; children = freddo frogs and haribo.

blibblibs · 30/01/2019 16:33

I went to morrisons today for peanut butter and bought the last 6 Simpson puddings.
So those, 4 large jars of pb and some Spanish strawberries! Checkout assistant didn't even blink

cloudtree · 30/01/2019 16:38

For an emergency super easy and really tasty quiche I can recommend a jar of lidl pesto genovese and five eggs. Nothing else required/throw in whatever else you have - our favourite is lumps of feta

Mix up, pour into pastry case, jobs a good un.

Potentialmadcatlady · 30/01/2019 16:44

Thanks Bellinisurge.. that’s the plan.. now I’m happy with my stash I’m going to keep doing my normal shopping and if nothing awful happens I can easily use the food in the stash- I going got what I know my lot will eat....
aw ta Scandaloso- hopefully the softly softly approach will mean I can keep my Dad safe if needed... I’m in the part of the country that is most likely to be worst hit if things go south so am really surprised my Dad isn’t more concerned

bellinisurge · 30/01/2019 16:52

@JosephineBucket , is your move plan imminent?
If milk is a key thing, could you get a packet of powdered skimmed milk. Supermarket own brand is fine and doesn't take up much space. Or Marvel (also skimmed).
Porridge oats made with water on the hob can be stirred into creamy yumminess and are not too pricey.
Do you have a close trusted friend nearby who would be willing to hold some food while you move?
If not, id suggest one extra plastic box filled with whatever you can manage that will tide you over for a couple of days. Aldi tinned stews are reasonable bulked out with rice. That kind of thing.

AlphaJuno · 30/01/2019 16:53

AsdA do a packet soya mince which I have added to the cupboard. Still no tinned potatoes.....

AutumnCrow · 30/01/2019 16:54

Things my local supermarkets seem low on: tinned potatoes, the cheaper tinned tomatoes, uht semi-skimmed milk, the cheaper dried spaghetti (like Smart Price) and the cheaper jams.

I don't think it's all going into food bank trolleys - I've been having a look in them because I'm nosey when I've been putting a few bits in, and they seem to have some of the above, but mostly quite a varied mix of tinned food, sanitary pads (hurrah), biscuits, dried pasta shapes, and boxes of cereal like cornflakes.

OddBoots · 30/01/2019 16:56

If anyone doesn't like UHT milk they might like oat milk, you can buy it long life or you can buy oats and make it fresh

JosephineBucket · 30/01/2019 17:05

@bellinisurge The move could be imminent or in 6 months such is the joy of the bidding system. Funnily enough I bought some Marvel powdered milk from Poundstretcher today and instant tea which will only be drunk in life and death situation!

I'm not paranoid about roving gangs but I also feel a bit uncomfortable moving into a new place with tons of food and people knowing about it.

Satsumaeater · 30/01/2019 17:05

I just checked my Brexit stash and...well.

Loads of tinned fruit.

Filter coffee. Loads of it. And filter papers.

Some tinned fish. Baked beans. And more baked beans. (I don't like baked beans, DH and DS do). Plenty of tea bags.

Leftover Lebkuchen and christmas pudding!

Dorset Cereals granola.

How middle class a stash is that? I think I need some more rice/pasta - things I can actually make a meal with. However, we won't starve for at least a week! The Christmas pudding serves 8 so will do for a meal on its own...

daffydowndilys · 30/01/2019 17:06

I'm going to do a big online order, that way if the cheap stuff has all gone, they will give me better stuff and price match it.

cloudtree · 30/01/2019 17:44

You might be lucky daffy but I have found that with my past few internet shops I have been sent an email saying the product is out of stock so it has been removed from my basket.

Fingers crossed

Lwmommy · 30/01/2019 18:45

One of my favourite stash items is the Dr Oetker pud in a mug packets. Tesco regularly discount to 25p or 50p and they just need a small amount of milk UHT or.powdered works) to make a very quick hot chocolatey rich pudding. They also do a bake in the box loaf in Lemon and Poppy Seed or Banana and Choc Chip that was on sale recently. Figure if nice stuff gets hard to find it will be a good treat.

PerverseConverse · 30/01/2019 18:51

I've got mini eggs, wispas, custard powder, and apple pie filling as my warm and fuzzy items.

How soon are people looking to fill their freezers. I want to prep fairly soon, but I don't want to have stuff in the freezer for too long.

borntobequiet · 30/01/2019 19:08

Lack of tinned potatoes might be a seasonal thing? Do they only use new potatoes? Perhaps people don’t buy them so much nowadays (who would if they could get fresh).
After spending my childhood eating tinned peas, I’d be very pissed off if I had to spend my declining years doing the same. Stocking up anyway...

blibblibs · 30/01/2019 19:09

I cleaned my freezer yesterday and did a quick inventory. So my plan for the next couple of weeks is to get the almost finished bags of peas and chips eaten and stock up with fresh. Also going to do some batch cooking that's stuffed with veg but am going to leave that until the beginning of march unless things start to get iffy in the supermarket before then.

ElenadeClermont · 30/01/2019 19:15

Satsumaeater How can you have any lebkuchen left?! Shock Can I come round and try them, please? Flowers

UnnecessaryFennel · 30/01/2019 19:19

So.

A couple of nights ago I very cautiously broached the subject of a bit of casual prepping with my Daily Mail reading, Leave supporting dad (with whom we live). I suggested that, all things being equal, we should perhaps think about getting a few tins and a bit of extra loo roll in.

Tonight, he told me that he was lying awake thinking about it last night and thinks we should buy some plastic boxes for storing rice, flour etc in the garage so the mice don't get it. And perhaps clear out the second freezer in the garage and buy in some mince, veg and chicken.

You could've knocked me down with a feather.

In fairness, he has always maintained that he didn't vote in the referendum because whilst he doesn't personally want to be in the EU, he knew me and ds would not want Brexit. But he is definitely, emphatically not a 'remainer' and has never had a good word to say about the EU.

We still can't actually talk about Brexit without getting annoyed with each other, but at least I don't have to hide my stash of soup under the bed anymore!

cloudtree · 30/01/2019 19:32

I’m stocking the freezer already. Most things will be fine for at least 18 months so no drawback in doing it now.

AutumnCrow · 30/01/2019 19:40

Fennel I think stashing food is allowing people with different perspectives on the EU/WA to actually have a productive conversation.

My DP thought I was a bit OTT about my stash at first but I just said, 'it makes me feel a bit less anxious and a bit more in control' and he got it. I'd have done it anyway, but you're right that it's easier if you're all agreeing about something.

Like a proxy for diplomacy.

Bluelonerose · 30/01/2019 19:42

Dh has just had a strop coz I told him the shopping was coming in the morning.
He thinks I'm mad and it'll all be fine Hmm

I think he may have a point though as I've filled up downstairs and I'm now storing food under the bed and in wardrobes Blush
