Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

I know if I bought these microwavable things, sweet or savoury, I'd eat them long before Brexit!

Tins are less appealing somehow.

noodlenosefraggle · 30/01/2019 13:30

I've bought all the healthy stuff like tinned fruit. Im thinking of keeping the treat stuff for later to avoid them being eaten. My list is-a few giant bars of chocolate, wine boxes err.. More giant bars of chocolate! I have cooking marge and eggs in so could make cakes and biscuits.

Lovelyflowerstoday · 30/01/2019 14:14

I'm doing my 'forward purchasing' now but am a bit curious as to why if people are ill they have a supply put by, surely you could just do an on-line order?

Lovelyflowerstoday · 30/01/2019 14:19

Bellini you are so lovely and patient with everyone, thank you Smile

PerverseConverse · 30/01/2019 14:20

I've added some more chocolate to my stash today. And 2 packs of toasting muffins to the freezer. They'll get used before brexit but I'm in the forward planning zone now and they were reduced in the Co-op.

Thank you @Lovelyflowerstoday . I am neither of those things but I try to be Grin

bellinisurge · 30/01/2019 14:42

@Lovelyflowerstoday ,in answer to your question about being ill, I have MS and relapses take on many forms. When I last had flu or d&v (not MS related but sorry for TMIGrin), the last thing I was able to do was clear my thoughts well enough to make an online order. When my dd was ill with d&v she wasn't overly keen on me doing anything other than being right by her side to help her.
Having stuff in can be a godsend in those circumstances.

unexpectedgifts · 30/01/2019 14:55

I stocked up my tinned meats today.

Marks and Spencer's chunky chicken and their ham.
I've also ordered a large quantity of TVP to bulk out mince dishes (this works really well and it's so cheap).

Tomorrow I'm buying essential toiletries for my Brexit cupboard.

I'm adding stock cubes to my list, extra coffee and chorizo.

TheElementsSong · 30/01/2019 14:56

why if people are ill they have a supply put by

Lovelyflowers I'm new to "prepping" but am an old-school batch-cooking and well-stocked pantry type, always have been. So I haven't ever deliberately put stuff ready in case of illness.

As I've said elsewhere, one occasion when we were glad of our supplies was when DH and I both got flu at the same time and could barely get out of bed.

In theory we could have ordered shopping online. In practice, there were a couple of days where thinking hard enough to operate the computer was almost beyond us. And perhaps more importantly, there was a huge emotional comfort boost to being able to simply get delicious, nutritious home-cooked food out of the freezer.

Scandaloso · 30/01/2019 14:57

What is TVP?

bellinisurge · 30/01/2019 14:57

@unexpectedgifts , I have heard beautiful things about M&S tinned stuff, particularly stews etc. Don't have one near me but maybe .....

bellinisurge · 30/01/2019 14:58

TVP is soya mince or chunks. I think.
Textured Something? Protein.

AutumnCrow · 30/01/2019 14:59

TVP is textured vegetable protein, like soya mince.

AutumnCrow · 30/01/2019 15:03

M&S tinned food is lovely; but can be about x3 the cost of the Aldi / Lidl equivalent.

Scandaloso · 30/01/2019 15:11

I've just looked on the M&S website. I didn't know they did grocery deliveries? That must be a new thing.

unexpectedgifts · 30/01/2019 15:49

@bellinisurge TVP is textured vegetable protein. It doesn't have a taste but it's texture is similar to minced beef or chicken.

It's really easy to bulk out a mince based dish and you can double the quantity of real meat for under 50 pence.

It can be used it it's own right as vegetarians do, but I prefer it with meat as with a little oxo it makes a delicious meal.

I get mine either online for big orders or Holland and Barrett sell it in smaller packets.

unexpectedgifts · 30/01/2019 15:54

I don't usually buy M&S tinned meats, but I figured if we have to eat tinned foods they might as well be good ones.

I can make a pie to feed us all using flour, oil and the contents of a tin mixed with tinned mushrooms.

It will make it go further, pies always do.

It's milk and eggs I'm most concerned about.

Does anyone know if frozen eggs behave like eggs once defrosted?

cloudtree · 30/01/2019 16:04

These are not just ordinary pleb rations, these are Marks and Spencer luxury steak flavoured rations in a rich EU derived merlot and french shallot sauce.

Sounds good to me!

Frozen eggs are completely fine in baking, quiches etc. Personally I think they're a bit rubbery in scrambled egg.

bellinisurge · 30/01/2019 16:05

GrinGrinGrin

AutumnCrow · 30/01/2019 16:06

Apparently the best way to freeze eggs is to swirl with a fork a bit - to break the yolk, but don't actually beat them - and when defrosted they're fine for baking.

AutumnCrow · 30/01/2019 16:09

If I'm going to hell in a hardcart it's going to be accompanied by mushroom omelet on thin slices of handcrafted dill seed bread.

bellinisurge · 30/01/2019 16:10

Grin excellent plan

GoFiguire · 30/01/2019 16:12

Well, I don’t think you can boil them.

Potentialmadcatlady · 30/01/2019 16:13

I’m just a little proud of myself today 😊.. my stash is coming along really well ( I’m totally broke but worth it) and today I managed to put ten single portion worth of veg rich beef stew into my parents freezer...my Dad thinks I was just using up meat but I wasn’t- it’s my attempt of getting him to stock up a little without knowing- because he firmly believes in leaving and everything will be amazing 🙄. I also used up leftover gift vouchers to get a load more tins and pulses 😁

bellinisurge · 30/01/2019 16:23

@Potentialmadcatlady , it is tricky getting things in place for older but unwilling parents. Sneaky use of stews there.
Be careful with your money and make sure that, if you don't need the food you've invested in for an emergency, you make steady use of it to save you money in the coming months..
