Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

I save bacon fat too! At least I store it in the fridge. My mum just left the frying pan with leftover fat on the hob all week.

I am cooking 1200kg of stew tonight to go in the new freezer.

VanillaSugarr · 29/01/2019 19:44

Ohhhhhh fffffffffffff

We’re doomed.

macblank · 29/01/2019 19:45

On storing veg...

Iceland's (and other stores) do a good selection of frozen Veg, plus.... Onions, mixed peppers, mushrooms. I personally only use the peppers.

I hate when frozen onions still contain the rubber outside layer, which no matter how well cooked, is always tough. I've yet to try the mushrooms.. feedback would be good.

Plus, I do love chestnut mushrooms (not seen frozen version s yet) over the plainer tasting white button mushrooms (would still/ n do still, eat when out, on my fry up)

Some home grown beans etc need prep before freezing, including par boiling..

VanillaSugarr · 29/01/2019 20:04

Is anyone going to stockpile cash in case G4S can’t get to the cashpoints to refill them?

cloudtree · 29/01/2019 20:05

I have cash. Prepper basic

Myusernameismud · 29/01/2019 20:12

Nobody has mentioned the tins of chicken in a white sauce yet. We call it caravan chicken because it was always a favourite dinner when we went on holiday in the caravan as kids (I say caravan, it was essentially a tin shell on wheels with a couple of beds and a camping stove, plus a bucket to wee in!)
I can safely say it still tastes as good now I'm an adult as it did as a child. Serve with tinned sweetcorn mixed in, on a bed of rice.

Scandaloso · 29/01/2019 20:14

I saw something in Home Bargains today that looked like camping food, it was some kind of potato and bacon thing. But not refrigerated.

Myusernameismud · 29/01/2019 20:15

Oh also, you can buy dried onions and mushrooms from Morrisons, think they're made by Whitworths. Dreamy for a mushroom risotto

rainbowruthie · 29/01/2019 20:15

Yes to the question about cash

TheElementsSong · 29/01/2019 20:46

1200kg of stew

Um, what? ShockGrin

Scandaloso · 29/01/2019 20:49

1200kg of stew! Is this your new freezer?

How will this affect free school meals?

slithytove · 29/01/2019 21:03

Sorry that was a bit brief! Just worried about schools and kids

Scandaloso · 29/01/2019 21:11

It's a good question. Not one I can answer.

MiceSqueakCatsMeow · 29/01/2019 21:18

My dad liked tinned chicken. It's okay. Too salty to give to dcs. I don't know what to do about the vegetables because my dcs don't like tinned or frozen.

RedToothBrush · 29/01/2019 21:19

I was looking for stockpilers in the supermarket today but couldn't see any from the contents of their trolleys. But when I looked at mine realised I didn't much look like one either.

I got the last things off my basic list today and now intend to just keep topped up. And get fresh stuff like margarine later down the line.

But after tonight I'm trying hard to wrestle with a rising sense of panic that I haven't got enough. Or that I should start to go full on army ration into stuff we wouldn't normally buy. Do I really need more flour? And yeast?

I DO have enough in the short term now though. More than.

I don't know. The closer this creeps to March without resolution the worse that feeling gets.

I'm going to struggle with that feeling. Rationally I know I have do it all now, and unless we are into full scale food riots we'll be fine. It's just whether we are leaning towards full scale crazy that makes me worry. (and my heart says yes we are you are just in denial of the magnitude of awfulness)

I swear those MPs do not have a clue.

Fish and chips for three is over a tenner.

RedToothBrush · 29/01/2019 21:22

How will this affect free school meals?

Surely they will be prioritised in theory. In practice it depends if its processed food or made from scratch. Processed is simply more difficult on supply chains.

It depends on how well organised the government are.

If there's no school meals then they aren't organised and that's reason to worry...

Tidy2018 · 29/01/2019 21:22

March 29th is the last day of term, with a fortnight's holiday. So I'll be buying extra on top of extra. Honestly, I'm very anxious about the official lack of advice. Especially on top of being out of our normal routine during the holiday. Am I extreme in this?

BobDobbs · 29/01/2019 21:24

@Myusernameismud I remember the tins of chicken, it was called chicken supreme and we used to have it on sandwiches. I actually want some now despite having been veggie for many years. I wish quorn would make a version Grin

BobDobbs · 29/01/2019 21:25

I hope school meals will be prioritised (and nursery), at least we would know that the children were being well fed once a day.

Graphista · 29/01/2019 21:29

Fuck! Vote AGAINST extending art 50

Capricornandproud · 29/01/2019 21:39

I’m getting so anxious now about being prepped, as a single mother to a 5 year old living in a pretty rural area. One thing I’m not sure of is energy prices come April; I installed a pay as you go meter and keep it fairly well topped up. Should I be adding as much as I can to it now??

Also what do we think will happen to car insurance etc, if anything?? Can’t see why that would change but someone wiset than me might know...

Got paid today so off to fill another plastic storage tub with Brexit rations 😥😥

Spaghetticarbanana · 29/01/2019 21:39

Sat down with DH tonight to discuss my brexit stash. We have 4dc and even just the amount of cereals and milk we go through in a week has shocked him.
I'm trying not to freak out too much, just getting a few extras.
DH lost his job last year and we had to visit a food bank, brexit aside its amazing how quickly you can go from fine to in trouble.
Ive name changed today and finally joining in.
Can you freeze eggs to then use in baking? Pancakes/cakes etc.

SalrycLuxx · 29/01/2019 21:44

Yes. I think you need to crack the eggs into ice cube trays first though

Scandaloso · 29/01/2019 21:44

Yes you can freeze eggs. Apparently best if you beat them first.
