Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

Goodness have just completed a frighteningly expensive online shop, wonder if anything will be missing....

Belindabelle · 29/01/2019 16:00

I have really noticed the increase in food prices in the last 4 months or so.

Finally decided buy a second freezer to allow me to stock up properly. Not just because of Brexit but incase of bad weather, illness etc.

Our local farm sells fantastic quality meat direct to the public. If you buy in larger quantities it works out cheaper than any butcher or supermarket . I have never been able to do this before but new freezer will make this possible. I feel calmer already.

Just need to replenish the alcohol stash now. Trouble is I am tempted to drink it! Especially on the days like this.

QueenAnneBoleyn · 29/01/2019 16:08

Belindabelle I know what you mean re the alcohol. It’ll sit there practically yelling “drink me!”.....

Scandaloso · 29/01/2019 16:11

when MPs were talking about food shortages and increased prices "well let them go to the chippy"

Was it the MP for Versailles?

cloudtree · 29/01/2019 16:12

Was it the MP for Versailles?

Grin chips and cake would be a nice stockpile.

cloudtree · 29/01/2019 16:18

Yvette cooper talking about "the chasing of unicorns"

macblank · 29/01/2019 16:19

When you say "tinned peas", do you mean, tinned garden peas, or the lovely processed pea? There is a huge difference, and taste is the biggest part!

Bachelor's bigga pea, are lovely tinned peas, but standard garden peas in a tin, are nasty.... Don't spoil a great shepherd's pie, if using tinned garden peas.

wigglybeezer · 29/01/2019 16:29

I spent £170 pounds in Home Bargains today! I pretended I was doubling up on things for my Mum because we have snow here. I have a year's supply of toothpaste! And masses of cat food.
I did feel a bit sheepish actually but then a bit smug when I packed it away.

cloudtree · 29/01/2019 16:33

Hmm interesting pea information. So I'm looking for the tin to say "processed peas" rather than just "tinned garden peas"

cloudtree · 29/01/2019 16:33

or do you mean bachelors bigga peas are the only ones that are vaguely edible. Quick google says these are dried?

Graphista · 29/01/2019 16:39

"Quite shockingly a comment in parliament when MPs were talking about food shortages and increased prices "well let them go to the chippy""

Mps have said worse particularly comments Re austerity:

Borrow off family/friends (if you're poor chances are they are too! That's if you even have people you can borrow from - and how are you supposed to pay them back?! People will stop lending to you if you don't pay it back! They're not banks!

'Dip into savings cash in some bonds and shares seriously ivory towers or what?!

And this gem from an MP who was asked what a HOMELESS family should do with their belongings 'we'll surely you'd just put them in your 2nd/holiday house' I shit you not - and no he wasn't joking!

COMPLETELY clueless about real life.

"When you say "tinned peas", do you mean, tinned garden peas, or the lovely processed pea? There is a huge difference, and taste is the biggest part!" Personal taste. I like tinned garden peas but not marrowfat ones

AutumnCrow · 29/01/2019 16:44

The nicest tinned peas are marrowfat, and mushy. For garden peas, frozen are better.

That ^^ is my apocalypse pea knowledge.

bluescreen · 29/01/2019 16:46

cloudtree Bog standard tinned peas can be cheered up French style by first of all frying some chopped spring onion (or shallot or onion) and bacon (lardons or ham, whatever's to hand) in a little butter before slinging the peas in, and adding some chopped mint and a twist of black pepper to serve.

Bloody hell, Graphista I missed that (got Hilary Benn on now, debating in Commons in very sensible style). That's shocking.

Hmm, yes I can perhaps see how that would be better than my UK style open tin, heat, serve recipe

NameChanger22 · 29/01/2019 16:51

Stop right there. You can all stop worrying and buying tins of beans. I have been reliably been informed by a group of highly intelligent Brexiters (sorry about the contradiction in terms) that Brexit isn't happening. Phew, it's all going to be fine after all.

cloudtree · 29/01/2019 17:04

Phew. Glad that’s all resolved then!

macblank · 29/01/2019 17:14

lol
Yes, and no!

Yes, processed peas are the nice ones.
You can buy old style dried peas, but I'd stick with the tins. Farrow's processed peas, are a really nice tinned peas.

Def stay away from tinned garden peas.... 🤢🤢🤢 lol but processed peas, are really nice with say pie n mash, or sausages, faggots, fish n chips, savoury mince, to name a few meals.

Stay away from economy versions. Our faves are Farrow's n bigga peas.

Graphista · 29/01/2019 17:30

"Bloody hell, Graphista I missed that (got Hilary Benn on now, debating in Commons in very sensible style). That's shocking."

The first time I knew about it was a FB post so I didn't automatically accept veracity & also wondered if it was satire. It was a few years back and I can't find the bloody quote now and can't remember who made it unfortunately (and Google isn't helping I'm just getting nonsense on council tax for second homes!)

But yes I was really shocked too!

mystakenidentity · 29/01/2019 18:22

Sammy Wilson of the DUP...representing the best interests of Northern Irish chip shops...😳🙄...but probably not the rest of NI...

bluechameleon · 29/01/2019 18:22

I've done my first shop today so I'm a bit behind. I have a few questions:

  1. I gather from this thread that tinned garden peas are no good. What about the jars of peas and carrots?
  2. Are there any acceptable tinned meats? I've got pulses and fish but I'm the only one who likes them really.
  3. I've heard you can freeze grated cheese. Does this work well?
  4. What would be the best way to store apples and potatoes?
What other fresh fruit and veg could I store? Onions, carrots, squash, sweet potatoes? Thanks very much oh wise ones
bellinisurge · 29/01/2019 19:02

I love tinned peas. Not keen on mushy generally (dh's guilty pleasure) but I've no problem with tinned garden peas. It's all we had in my 70s childhood.
Got iron and Vit C, great with bacon (as are all greens).
Meat? I generally hold my breath and buy some tinned stews etc. Also got tuna. Also some soya mince and chunks. Trying some jackfruit in tins too because I think vegan ingredients and recipes are a strategy. It's a personal taste thing really. Personally hate spam but saw a poster mention bacon grill in tins. Not really my thing but as I said I love greens with bacon so maybe ....
Another thing I do and it's more for taste is save the liquid fat from any bacon I fry - sounds yuk but my mum did it and stored it in the fridge. I then use it to pep up any lentil soup I make by first frying the veg in a tiny bit of bacon fat before adding the lentils and then stock. But that's just a me comfort thing that I've conned tbe rest of the house into liking.

Because I'm a prepper, I also have a pressure canner so have a lot of turkey meat sauces in this . But pressure canning is hard core prepper stuff and very pricey to buy a proper canner as an investment so not advisable at all for Brexit prepping.

Belindabelle · 29/01/2019 19:03

A good way to store veg is to freeze it as part of a stew of curry. Make a vat of bolognese type sauce and ram in as many fresh veg as you dare. Grate carrots and courgette. Slice peppers and mushrooms. Dice celery and onions etc.

I don’t mind tinned corned beef. I did see some tins of stew the other day but haven’t purchased yet. I did promise DH some Frey Bentos pies and Stag chilli to remind him of his student days.

You can freeze grated cheese but pre packed cheese tends to have a good date on it. I ignore the instructions to eat within 3 days of opening.

bellinisurge · 29/01/2019 19:05

[on a roll avoiding another chore Grin], Onions do store but consider getting dried onions off Amazon if, like me, most of your home cooked meals start with onions. They need a soak first.

Scandaloso · 29/01/2019 19:06

Those crunchy onion bits you get in tubs are very moreish!
