Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

Ocado sometimes import the Parmalat brand of UHT from Italy, which isn't too bad - and all cream, only thickened with Carrageenan (derived from seaweed). I've got some of that from a while back. Haven't ever seen it, or anything similar, on supermarket shelf.

bellinisurge · 29/01/2019 13:12

@PerverseConverse , there's a Nigella recipe for making bagels. I'm old, you had to hunt them out back in tbe day. This recipe is as close as you get to the real thing.

MakeItAmazing · 29/01/2019 13:18

I have a cheese make your own box and some of the ingredients are out of date. Given the other thread with use by date, would it be okay to use?

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 29/01/2019 13:30

I've been buying extra pasta, sauces and other non-perishable food that my dc with ASD will eat. I'm a bit of a worrier anyway but I think I need to up my game after reading this thread.

LumpsMum · 29/01/2019 13:52

@RangeRider 🤣😂🤣GrinGrin

But it’s your kind of sense of humour that makes me want to stay! Wine

RedToothBrush · 29/01/2019 14:38

I was wondering about CREAM?? UHT-type, does it exist in the UK?

Dessert isle in Tesco.

Who do not appear to stock dried milk in store (despite it being online under dessert isle)

My Tesco has run out of tinned mandarins and tinned pineapple.

I'm off to sainsbos now as I've managed to forget one of the few none stockpiling items I went in for!!!

GirlsBlouse17 · 29/01/2019 14:53

Sorry, this may have been asked and answered many times on many threads....

How many weeks or months even should we be building up?

Scandaloso · 29/01/2019 14:57

I'm aiming to have six weeks worth of food put by in frozen/store cupboard foods.

My cupboard will remain as normal, once we finally leave. Preferably, a no deal, deal, would be in my research (and backed by several leaders around the world, and big business leaders) the best for our great country.

Our country used to be considered a powerful wealthy country, now we are the joke of Europe... Why, well it's due to how we do everything Europe says without question. This has lead to the position were in now.

At least you got one bit right. Well done, you.

VanillaSugarr · 29/01/2019 15:14

Hot Chocolate powder!!!

Belindabelle · 29/01/2019 15:19

You used to be able to buy tinned "sterilised cream" but it was Nestle. Not sure if supermarkets have their own label but a tin of that served with tinned fruit salad was a staple of my 70's childhood.

A quick google and I think they have rebranded it as Carnation Extra Thick Cream.

Evaporated milk is useful as you can also dilute it with water to make milk but its too sweet for me.

The squirty cream in cans lasts a fairly long time in the fridge. M&S or Anchor Extra Thick have the highest fat and lowest sugar for those doing low carb. They also taste the best.

You can freeze double cream if you whip it first.

Love it! What a great sense of humour 😂👍

RangeRider · 29/01/2019 15:20

LumpsMum - it'll cost you a tinned jam pudding! For 2 puds you can a week's worth of humour Grin
(Of course if they have them freely available in Germany you can return there and post them to me while I email you witty comments Wink)

QueenAnneBoleyn · 29/01/2019 15:34

I’ve started buying extra this month and hiding it away. Will continue to do so.
When I mentioned to DH about prepping he seemed to think I was nuts.
There’s no way I’ll mention it to family members as they’ll mock me and if it all does go pear shaped they’ll be round here trying to raid my cupboards........
Thanks everyone for your ideas.
Interestingly at Tesco this morning a lot of tinned goods shelves were low on stock.

otheractivities · 29/01/2019 15:37

Some one on the radio this morning mentioned that as Mcdonalds are always banging on how they source their meat etc from the uk , how is brexit going to affect them ?

cloudtree · 29/01/2019 15:41

Stocking up at the moment is win win. If we get a deal we will have bought at lower prices. If we crash out we will have things to supplement whatever else is available. There's no downside as far as I can see.

Scandaloso · 29/01/2019 15:42

Interestingly at Tesco this morning a lot of tinned goods shelves were low on stock.

A lot of people will have started quietly putting a few bits by here and there but not being particularly vocal about it. It will certainly go up a notch or ten from her on out since yesterday's announcements about potential shortages.

cloudtree · 29/01/2019 15:44

I gave DH and DS2 tinned peas last night to test them out. They were not impressed. I suspect I am going to have to use them in shepherd's pies and casseroles rather than serving them up as a side. Ds2 said he'd rather live on grass.

Whatdoiwanttohear · 29/01/2019 15:46

Cloudtree will things be more expensive if we get a deal? Pondering my 'forward purchasing' decision date.

cloudtree · 29/01/2019 15:47

I think most experts agree that food prices (and other prices) will certainly rise in general if we leave, whether that is with or without a deal.

cloudtree · 29/01/2019 15:49

In fact prices have already gone up. I started putting things aside in August. Prices have risen since then.

bellinisurge · 29/01/2019 15:52

My dd unexpectedly expressed a love for a particular tinned fruit so I went to Sainsbury's at lunch to get three tins. I also got some of the sainted microwave steam puddings- sticky toffee this time. (All hail microwaveable steam puddings )GrinAlso a household favourite. And some dates to actually make it because I remember last time I made it for real the recipe included these.

cloudtree · 29/01/2019 15:53

MPs talking about food supply threats right now including shortages and increased prices.

cloudtree · 29/01/2019 15:55

Quite shockingly a comment in parliament when MPs were talking about food shortages and increased prices "well let them go to the chippy" Shock
