Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

I'm sure someone has mentioned it but just in case ...sanpro

CheekyChops666 · 29/01/2019 08:24

My Brexit Cupboard has looking hell of handsome back in October / November... Had about 20 tins of soup (various flavours), 20 tins of spaghetti and beans, microwave rice, big bags of pasta, .......cereals, chocolate, crisps...

Went to put some extras in it at the weekend to discover DP and the kids have been eating from there just whenever rather than from the normal cupboard (meaning I haven't replaced because I've thought we've had stuff in) and now it's practically empty 😩😩😩

Will need to restock and put a padlock on it apparently...SmileWine

I'm about to order more than the usual amount of daily disposable contact lenses for my daughter. I have no idea where they're made, but it would be a disaster if she didn't have them, as she can't see past the end of her nose without them. I'm not taking any chances on supply chain disruptions. Any other contact lens users thought of this one?

cloudtree · 29/01/2019 08:54

Boss of tata steel on breakfast news talking about brexit concerns, supply chin issues etc..

prettybird · 29/01/2019 09:03

Twofingers - I'd mentioned ordering my next batch of dailies early, as I'd noticed mine are made in Ireland.

VanillaSugarr · 29/01/2019 09:03

I am going to think more long term than prepping for a couple of weeks. If food prices are going to soar then I want to stock up now to subsidise what’s available over the next 18 months.

RedToothBrush · 29/01/2019 09:16

The Wright Stuff are covering No Deal Food Shortages this morning...

tennisracquet · 29/01/2019 09:27

Today is the day for me.

I have done quite a lot of "multiples of everything plus extra chickpeas, lentils and baked beans".

To go beyond that would be embarrassing (ie, would look panicky if anyone knew), would require storage in various weird nooks and crannies eg under the bed, would be expensive and would maybe cause my DH to think I'm weird and wasting money.

But if no amendments pass today that put on us on a path to a Deal, any Deal, I'm going to pull the trigger on my Embarrassing Stockpile Shop

TheElementsSong · 29/01/2019 09:30

The Wright Stuff are covering No Deal Food Shortages this morning...

That, plus the recent ramping up of voxpop BlitzSpirit narrative of “hardship will be character building” - watch for the seachange to spread with flowing smoothness through the MN Leavers.

From “there won’t be any shortages/hysterical/panic-buying is all your fault/but mysteriously I won’t pledge not to prep” to “of course there will be shortages, I was in fact specifically visualising this outcome as I ticked that box in 2016/naturally all true patriots will stockpile/also all true patriots will enjoy going hungry to purify their British souls”

RedToothBrush · 29/01/2019 09:41

Jeremy Vine is being awesome whilst the guests kick off at each other, properly.

RedToothBrush · 29/01/2019 09:55

Waves at Jo from 48 preppers.

You were awesome.

Something tells me, you are also reading here...

Scandaloso · 29/01/2019 10:56

CheekyChops666 forget the padlock. Ditch the DP and kids. no room for sentiment where Brexit cupboards are concerned. You'll miss them initially but you will soon find solace in your unpilfered-about-with Brexit stores.

PerverseConverse · 29/01/2019 11:24

Haven't caught up since last night but now have:

Another under bed storage box
Apple pie filling
Dried mash potato
Long life milk
Matches
Shower gels
Handwash
First aid supplies
Calpol
Deodorant
Passata
Washing powder
Dishwasher tablets
Sanpro
Stock cubes

I've been making lists of what we have, this morning. I barely let myself hope, any more, that we don't end up at no-deal. But if we do I will only need to buy fresh produce (vegetables, fruit, milk, fish, eggs, some dairy) for most of the rest of the year. And those in much smaller quantities than usual due to amount of tins/jars/bulging freezer. Assuming I need a normal amount of tins (rather than eating them in place of fresh produce in no-deal) I reckon I have enough for 6 months! I have enough wine and unopened spices/condiments etc... for a whole year, as well as cleaning products/toiletries for 3 months.
If enough people are doing the same then supermarkets will have a good first quarter and then a few dismal ones. Though I recognise that I may be doing more than most at this stage... I'm unlucky in that I have experience of things getting worse than could have been imagined, but lucky as I had money in savings to divert to stocking up on non-perishables, plenty of storage space, and a compliant (if initially rather bemused) DH.

mum2jakie · 29/01/2019 11:58

I've done another round of shopping:

Tea bags 2x boxes 240 for £7 Farmfoods
Stocked up on various tins of favourite Heinz products in Asda (50p per tin)
Macaroni cheese sauces

Re the Simpsons tinned steamed puddings, they were plenty in Farmfoods for £1 per tin. I only bought a single tin as I was loaded up with other bits.

GlowWine · 29/01/2019 12:31

Now thinking about turning my boring stash into more interesting meals and I was wondering about CREAM?? UHT-type, does it exist in the UK? My last trip to the supermarket was unsuccessful but I may not have looked in the right dept. Where I come from you get loads of types mainly for cooking and also for having in coffee, and fresh cream much less so. I'm not sure tinned would be the same but I'll probably get a couple of those if I can't find cartons.

Scandaloso · 29/01/2019 12:34

Elmlea is uht isnt it?

Youcantscaremeihavechildren · 29/01/2019 12:37

Thanks for the comment about deal/no deal (anyone else wish we could just wake up to find we are in a bad game show dream about noel edmonds?!) I think food prices will rise though, and it is just a delay, so it's worth having stuff anyway. I've just filled up the freezer with half price meat in aldi, froze some bread that had early dates etc. I'm cooking up spag bol etc and will keep the freezer stocked so that partly if we get snow next week I won't have to out for veg, partly so I can keep a stock of meals that are ready, I always cook ahead anyway for difficult work days, we've got a few coming up over the next couple of weeks but I'll just keep replacing them. I'll keep adding an extra tin or two to the shop. Like a previous poster though I'm doing hflc, partly to lose weight and partly as its just easier on my stomach. Not sure how ill manage that though, it's a lot about eating veg, we get through bags of spinach, greens, leeks etc each week.
We are taking delivery of topsoil next week for our garden so we can grow our own veg, that'll take a while though. All of it will help when we have higher food prices though.

VanillaSugarr · 29/01/2019 12:40

Elmea isn’t really cream

The shelves were a bit empty in Morrisons this morning - no multipacks of baked beans, but there was a very good offer on so maybe that was why.

RangeRider · 29/01/2019 12:46

I’m German, so not only do I fear being turfed out, but I also like food, so I’ll keep adding to my stash. It won’t go to waste.
If you have a stash of tinned jam puddings you could probably trade them for x no. of years staying in the UK. Grin Then again you might prefer to keep the puddings and go back to Germany. I think it could be a tough call.

Somerville · 29/01/2019 12:54

I got excited by UHT double cream in Tesco while browsing for preps recently, but it turned out to be 'double cream alterniative' here with delicious Hmm sounding ingredients Reconstituted Dried Skimmed Milk, Water, Palm Kernel Oil, Palm Oil, Buttermilk Powder (Milk), Butteroil (Milk), Modified Maize Starch, Flavourings (contains Milk), Emulsifiers (Polysorbate 60, Mono- and Di-Glycerides of Fatty Acids, Sunflower Lecithins), Thickener (Xanthan Gum), Acidity Regulator (Trisodium Citrate), Salt, Colour (Beta-Carotene)
So I'll happily survive with coconut cream, LL organic milk, powdered milk for coffee and tins of condensed milk for indulgent treats (fudge and the like).

PerverseConverse · 29/01/2019 12:56

I've sorted out my freezer now and made room for my bagel supply. I have lots of frozen veg and veggie products, and a loaf of bread.

mum2jakie · 29/01/2019 12:58

Couldn't you use evaporated milk as a substitute for cream in cooking?

MakeItAmazing · 29/01/2019 12:58

Thank you OP. I have added dishwasher tablets to my next shopping list.

This morning I decided I would do an extra shop as I had some money spare and snow is planned. I had brexit and this thread in my mind but it is more due to living on top of a hill with a few kids and a lot of animals. Woman on check out said panic buying to the next till operator. I told her I wasn't panic buying but I had a lot of kids and animals and the snow is forecast plus what did it matter if people were buying a lot. I suggested to the next customer maybe we should go to Tesco next time? The tone of the shop worker was very sneery.

GlowWine · 29/01/2019 13:01

Thank you @Somerville . Yes sounds like I have to stick to tins... Nice list of ingredients Confused. Maybe I'll organise a care packet from my sister! Or go for an extended holiday to my parents.
