Well the good news is we haven't got a GE yet, and it looks unlike one will be called this week. Purely because we haven't got a crisis point looming this week.

May has officially confirmed plan A is plan B. But says she will try and get more on the backstop whilst working with the DUP. Barnier and Ireland have said 'no'

We now prepare for the Meaningful Vote II.

And a week of speculation about amendments.

Here's a quick summary of likely ones:
Guardian Article on possible amendments

I think the Labour one will struggle to gain Tory support. The big thing about it is leans the party line firmly towards a customs union.

The Grieve one is handicapped by talk of a minority of 300 taking control of Parliament. Otherwise it might have support.

The two most interesting are:

The Benn 'Indicative Vote' as its reflective of the Brexit Select Committee recommendations.

The Cooper-Boles Block No Deal amendment which is cross party and seeks to place a final date on May passing her deal by 26th Feb, after which Parliament will take control. This I believe is being supported by Labour as a whole.

Bercow of course gets to say which amendments are debated and voted on but Benn and Cooper-Boles have broad support so are unlikely to be ignored by him. The two together seem to compliment each other.

The rest of this week is likely to be lobbying on this but otherwise fairly calm. Though someone is bound to throw a few curveball in there with leaks.

The only other thing to watch out for is talk of up to 40 ministers quitting if they are not allowed a free vote on some sort of indicative vote motion. This seems to be being lead by Amber Rudd. But I don't expect this to come to a head until the weekend at the earliest.

In other words, we have a couple of days of calm before the storm. Expect it to ramp up again at the weekend in craziness.

For those that didn't join the web chat....a lot of the right wing MSM and Brexiteers were crowing yesterday about a report from Deloitte which said that the UK had more foreign investment than France & Germany combined and this proved Brexit wasn't having the impact 'Project Fear' said it was.

I was quite Shock as it did seem to fly in the face of what I would expect.

Anyway....I just read the Deloitte report and it actually shows a massive downward trend from $59.7m in 2015 to $37.4m in 2017 with the report saying the investment had halved again in the first half of 2018. So if that's true we could be looking at $18-20m in 2018 figures.

Which is a massive, fuck off drop. With no corresponding drop in France or Germany.

I might call that f@cker Nigel Farage tonight and put this to him...

umpteennamechanges · 24/01/2019 12:41

The table of figures for those that CBA to read the report...

TheElementsSong · 24/01/2019 12:42

Nice one, umpteen - naturally the actual detail will be conveniently ignored by Leavers.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 24/01/2019 12:50

Yes I saw that Pesty! I think we may well opt to leave - similar argument to that of leavers against EU - how dare they criticise us and when have they helped us/is it worth paying into/is it fair or biased against our nation/who runs it and are the elected - I can see it all being played out all over again by similar players.

Am so Angry at the moment. My dd went to dentist for a filling. She is on UC. She did not realise that if her net pay was over £935 a month (she bought home £942 it fluctuates between £900-£942). She has now been presented with an £80 bill with£100 fine! How is she going to pay for it? The fine dept. Wanted £50 a month. WTF! She can't afford it! She doesn't know what to do and is in tears. What is the point in her working! She has to pay all her rent ( private landlord and council tax which accounts for well over half her wages. Yes she get UC which doesn't cover the rest of her bills and food. If it wasn't for me they would starve. I'm a bloody pensioner supporting my dd and dgd! This government has a lot to answer for! Its not like she tried to diddle anyone! She was not aware. She will now have to pay for her prescriptions and her eye tests and glasses. For a wonder she has stomach ulcers! Grrrrr!Angry
Sorry I had to have a rant.Blush

@umpteennamechanges I guess you missed this bit of the report on page 17...

It’s likely that many businesses will be waiting for further clarity
before making long-term investment decisions. The data available
so far presents a mixed picture, but indicates that there has not
been a drastic fall in investment since the UK’s decision to leave the
EU in 2016, but rather a slight decline.

In 2015, there were 1,374 FDI projects announced in the UK,
compared to 1,170 in 2017 – meaning a 16% decline. In terms of UK
jobs created - in 2015 there were 95,992 jobs created as a result of
FDI, with 79,704 created in 2017. But two years does not represent
a long-term trend, given that annual figures can vary significantly
depending on just a few major projects.

Destiel · 24/01/2019 13:13

Sorry sos.
I've just got back from running a foodbank session...is there one near her?

bellinisurge · 24/01/2019 13:13

@Imnotswallowingthat - and that's positive because.....?

PestymcPestFace · 24/01/2019 13:14

Breaking: Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says in a No Deal scenario the UK would have to agree to full regulatory and customs alignment in NI if it were to honour its obligations to the GFA and the peace process.
twitter.com/tconnellyRTE/status/1088410626374942720

Plus bits about how we would struggle to make trade agreements if we broke GFA. And a just damm ratify the deal available.

Lucygoeswalkies · 24/01/2019 13:15

I looked at DGRossetti’s link to the BBC’s report on the TUC Chief’s meeting with TM. Then I looked at some of the comments. One of the commenters had written ‘vote up for no deal leave’, vote down for remain. ‘No deal’ received 269 votes. ‘Remain’ received 225 votes. Someone else had simply written ‘exit Brexit’. 169 thumbs up for that one - and 127 thumbs down, which flipped to 128 as I was reading.

If that (tiny sample) is any indication, we’re all fucking doomed. Probably.

Lucygoeswalkies · 24/01/2019 13:17

Correction. Exit Brexit had 228 thumbs down!

Tonsilss · 24/01/2019 13:26

I agree that we're doomed. But I also suspect that leavers spend more time posting comments on the internet. For one thing, they're less likely to be at work during the day.

Cherrypi · 24/01/2019 13:34

Anecdotally most of the leavers I know want no deal now because of memes on Facebook. The propaganda game is still strong.

PCPlumsTruncheon · 24/01/2019 13:37

umpteen OMG I heard that emasculated man and couldn’t believe what I was hearing. And he had his tongue so far up Farridge’s backside - saying that he was the only politician who could be trusted etc.
I honestly wondered today if I had imagined or hallucinated it. Thanks for reassuring me that I’m not going mad.

Cherrypi, that’s what’s so frightening.

Sostenueto · 24/01/2019 13:46

destiel yes there is but she thinks others worse off who have no one to help them would benefit more. She knows I won't let them starve. Its not the point. If people need UC they should not have to pay for prescriptions, glasses, and dentist because they are deemed to need help. Give in one hand take out the other.Sad.

RedToothBrush · 24/01/2019 13:46

Pippa Crerar @PippaCrerar
Biz minister @Richard4Watford tells German industrialists he's prepared to be sacked for saying no deal must be stopped. "I really don’t believe in this idea. I am very happy... if the Prime Minister decides I am not the right person to do the business industry job."

Hard Brexit will cost Ford $800m this year, carmaker warns
The carmaker’s estimate of the cost to it of a hard Brexit is among the largest by a single company so far, Sky News can reveal.

Plus all the suppliers and those jobs.

Thats whole communities. Screwed.

Please tell your daughter Food banks are for ANYONE.

Some of our clients work full time and still need help.

Food banks also help with signposting to other services your dd might find helpful.

Destiel · 24/01/2019 13:50

UC is not fit for purpose.

That a not yours dds fault.

Somerville · 24/01/2019 13:53

Thats whole communities. Screwed.

You’ve summed the whole sack of shit up in four words, Red.
It feels like our elected representatives are going insane. There is only two months to go and still no credible plan to extricate these islands from this mess.
I don’t like feeling despair. It so easily leads to bitterness. But, this week, it’s very hard not to succumb.

Quietrebel · 24/01/2019 14:00

I had to miss the webchat. Is there a link to it anywhere?

Hazardswans · 24/01/2019 14:06

Sorry for your daughter sos I'm on UC and it sucks .

PMK further along just caught up on 100 posts!

The BBC is highlighting a call for "super poo" donors.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-46944631

Now there's an invitation for mischief if ever there was ... imagine signing all the Brexiteers you know up for it - as not only are they full of shit, but it don't smell.

DG ! (slaps wrist)
