How would No Deal Brexit affect you personally?

What impact would no deal have on your personal circumstances? What is your personal biggest worry?
In my case it is medication which is my biggest concern.

Also - we’re the UK! We have our own solutions. We aren’t little victims relying on the EU to bail us out!

Hesta54 · 18/01/2019 20:14

smilethoyourheartisbreaking I have no idea how a no deal will affect me, because nobody knows at this point what a no deal will actually entail,

MissMalice · 18/01/2019 20:15

They can easily get vital medicine through

Through where?! Tailbacks in KENT? Through our customs checks?

Hesta54 · 18/01/2019 20:16

MissMalice The civil service are all working on it, I would imagine nobody wants a no deal, But if the two sides can’t agree then unfortunately that’s will happen

Hesta54 · 18/01/2019 20:18

MissMalice Custom checks can be held anywhere, doesn’t have to be at the port,

FishesaPlenty · 18/01/2019 20:22

Any serious tailbacks delaying imports would be on the other side of the Channel. There will (probably) be trucks queuing for miles at Calais waiting for ferries because the ferries will be stuck waiting to disembark vehicles into ports without big enough holding areas.

PlumpSyrianHamster · 18/01/2019 20:25

This thread just really makes me want to pull together with Brexiters and take back control . . . NOT!

MissMalice · 18/01/2019 20:26

I have to say, Hesta, you are spectacularly good at side stepping the relevant points raised here. If you’re operating on a basis of “nobody wants no deal” and “it’ll be fine” then no wonder.

The EU are powerless to get anything to us if it is our systems that are failing and we made a choice that put our citizens at risk of death. If you can’t grasp that, I’m wasting my time.

Novo-Nordisk (Denmark) confirmed in September that it was building up a 16 week reserve of insulin for the UK (to be ready by January 2019), and French manufacturer Sanofi pledged a 14 week reserve.

www.diabetes.co.uk/news/2018/sep/novo-nordisk-stockpiling-16-weeks-of-insulin-reserves-in-case-of-no-deal-brexit-91608600.html

Type 1 diabetes charity, JDRF issued an update yesterday;

Now, Novo Nordisk has announced it will be increasing supplies to 18 weeks and joining other companies in testing different shipping routes in the event of delays at the UK’s main port, Dover

Sanofi is also looking to test two alternative routes into the country, one into the east coast from the Netherlands and another route into the south coast from France

Lilly is also holding several months supply of insulin.

The government has already confirmed that medical supplies will be given priority and air freight used if necessary.

Hesta54... We are the ones leaving without a clue what we are doing, 40 trade deals no where nr sorted, meds not sorted, what about spares for all that Siemens medical equipment in hospitals?

We are turning 45 years of frictionless trade on its head and neither UK or the EU are preppared for it, its an impossible task given the timescales.

Did you see the ch4 article on the Gov depts who have not spent anything like the funds allocated or recruited staff, most who will need SC clearance and training..... not remotely possible in 2 months.

PestymcPestFace · 18/01/2019 20:29

If you have no clue what the EU thinks, please watch this. It is how the EU discusses brexit www.europarl.europa.eu/plenary/EN/vod.html?mode=chapter&vodLanguage=EN&startTime=20190116-08%3A39%3A57-447&fbclid=IwAR3F57JKs3WEt9XQ1Uaz850_HhwaEktFrtc_BUPAiYIenf5lr_cNXIkXP4A#

I would likely lose my job - owned by an EU company with big exports of services to the EU. Single parent so it's a huge worry.
Also rising costs & availability of food & fuel.

jasjas1973 · 18/01/2019 20:32

Clavinova... maybe but it is all so unnecessary, what exactly is being achieved here?
Bear in mind, the UK imports 1000s of different drugs that patients need, not just insulin, which of course May also requires.

Moussemoose · 18/01/2019 20:34

I think I'll be fine. I think my DP will keep his job. Both my D.C. should be ok.

But I don't know what the results on a no deal Brexit will be and I am not prepared to gamble with other people's lives.

Ta1kinPeace · 18/01/2019 20:34

They can easily get vital medicine through if it’s necessary
How?
If the ferries and trains and planes are jammed
How?

Babayaggatheboneylegged · 18/01/2019 20:37

My mum depends on insulin to stay alive, so that is my main, immediate worry. She told me at xmas that she’s stockpiling though, which I’m very relieved about. Have to say I’ve been pretty Hmm so far at the advice from Diabetes UK NOT to stockpile. As if anyone wants to take their chances!

Flowers to all who are also worried about medication, it sucks!

I will be affected by rising costs and am not convinced that either mine or my husband’s job will survive unscathed. We have a very small amount of savings, which we’ll easily burn through if things get tough.

What I don’t understand is why none of the no-deal brexiteers on here ever expand or explain their position. It’s all, ‘I’d like to treble leave. Tomorrow.’ And ‘I won’t be affected’ but no-one ever explains HOW or WHY.

All of my info was obtained from Diabetes UK and JDRF (Type 1 diabetes charity). I'm surprised that ThereWillStillBeMarsBars and Cheekysquirrel haven't been checking their websites frequently.

Do you genuinely think that such statements are evidence of the UK moving forwards into a bright future ?

zoemelb · 18/01/2019 20:43

My DH is from EU/Australia, and I'm from Australia. Needless to say, we voted remain. Not entirely sure but for now:

  • The rise in food price & everything else will be a punch in our pocket, both short term and long term.
  • £ has gone down a lot, so suddenly our salary has gone down 30% when travelling.
  • Job wise, probably won't affect for both my DH and I.
  • House price, we have a mortgage, so will be harder to move.
  • Feeling quite disappointed about the whole Brexit thing. Depends on how things go, we are considering for option to move to Amsterdam, Sweden or Canada.
  • Not entirely sure about "settlement status" for us and the kids, but I guess we are way better than the Brits living in Europe.
I am kind of having evil thought for "no deal" Brexit to happen. It will give a lesson for everyone voted Leave (I personally think they will be the one affected the most).
HoustonBess · 18/01/2019 20:48

I'm so utterly disheartened by people who seem to think things couldn't get worse than they are now/we'll have a bit if disruption then things will go back to normal.

We're the sixth biggest economy in the world. You think we don't have far to fall? You think there aren't plenty of other countries out there happy to take up where we leave off?

Clavinova · 18/01/2019 20:49

I'm just dispelling the false facts.

I'm just dispelling the false facts.
That was not what I asked.

The fact that the government has had to take over distribution of industrial / medical products from the market
Corbyn's socialist wet dream
is that really the progress that Brexit promised?

jasjas1973 · 18/01/2019 20:57

....and replacing them with more false facts.
