Brexit

Why didn't we get facts like this in advance?

HMRC projects additional Brexit red tape will cost UK businesses £6.5 billion/year. NHS estimates cost of satisfying new visa requirements on behalf of staff at £490 million/year.
*
That's nearly £7 billion in annual Brexit costs, or close to the £9 billion we pay as EU members!*

Why wasn't the homework done so we could have known things like this in advance?

assuming it's true

We lose 2% of decisions.

Your contempt for compromise is obvious even when we hardly ever lose.

Can I suggest it is the inability to regard working together, cooperation and compromise as reasonable ideas that has in part led us into this absolute fiasco.

frumpety · 16/01/2019 21:17

This 'shit storm' as you so eloquently put it, is happening because no bugger considered doing any planning when they decided to throw the decision out to the populace. Then in a fit of pique decided to start the clock on the process, thus massively limiting the time spent on planning. Smile

Weetabixandshreddies · 16/01/2019 21:19

With the state of Trump and Putin a European army is a damn good idea for a whole host of reasons.

That's your opinion. I disagree.

Do you have similar strong feelings about NATO?

No I don't.

Weetabixandshreddies · 16/01/2019 21:23

frumpety

Exactly. A poorly managed process from start to finish.

Your contempt for compromise is obvious even when we hardly ever lose.

It's not a contempt for compromise. It's an unwillingness to potentially be forced to become part of something that I strongly disagree.

And your willingness to compromise on the issue of Brexit is?

frumpety · 16/01/2019 21:24

Weetabix any luck with something the UK has fundamentally disagreed on but has been forced upon us regardless by the EU and which has absolutely no benefit to UK citizens ?

SanJelliChino · 16/01/2019 21:24

This is a fairly balanced article on democracy in the EU here.

No one is saying the EU system is perfect, but as explained in the article, neither is the UK's!

Moussemoose · 16/01/2019 21:25

When our troops work with NATO they are under the command of foreign generals - that's not a problem but an EU army is?

Care to explain?

1tisILeClerc · 16/01/2019 21:26

{With the state of Trump and Putin a European army is a damn good idea for a whole host of reasons.}
So you admit it Weetabix, you are a Putin fancier.

Moussemoose · 16/01/2019 21:27

My Brexit compromises...

I want to remain but would support WA as a compromise.

I would support a Norway style membership as a compromise.

I think parliament should make the final decision as is constitutionally required but can see why a PV may be needed.

None of these are a parliamentary revoke which is what I want but you don't always get what you want and with the country split a compromise might be a good thing.

SanJelliChino · 16/01/2019 21:28

And remember we give away a little bit of sovereignty to be part of NATO, and ironically, a rather large to be part of WTO!

Fantababy · 16/01/2019 21:30

We were told. I knew that most (ordinary) people would be worse off. How could we not be? People don't listen to experts any more.

Weetabixandshreddies · 16/01/2019 21:31

Weetabix any luck with something the UK has fundamentally disagreed on but has been forced upon us regardless by the EU and which has absolutely no benefit to UK citizens ?

Nope. I haven't looked because I'm in bed to get up to start work at 3.30am.

It doesn't matter anyway what has happened. It is what could happen that worries me and actually should worry everyone else who has unthinkingly voted to maintain the "status quo"

Weetabixandshreddies · 16/01/2019 21:32

So you admit it Weetabix, you are a Putin fancier.
Not even dignifying your pathetic statement with an answer.

millyonth · 16/01/2019 21:35

Weetabix
It doesn't matter anyway what has happened. It is what could happen that worries me and actually should worry everyone else who has unthinkingly voted to maintain the status quo.
I totally agree.

millyonth · 16/01/2019 21:37

Many people here talk about sovereignty with scorn. They just don't get it.

SanJelliChino · 16/01/2019 21:40

Sharing a bit of sovereignty to achieve a greater good (ie United Nations) is surely a good thing?

1tisILeClerc · 16/01/2019 21:41

{Not even dignifying your pathetic statement with an answer.}
A common leaver trait.
Still waiting for anything positive that leaver's can come up with.

The UK has always been sovereign, we don't need to 'get it'.

Why did remainers vote remain? What were you voting for?
I voted Remain to keep jobs. I knew that Leave would mean that the company I used to work for would relocate 25 minutes down the road with the loss of hundreds of jobs. I voted Remain because I knew that the chemo my ExBiL was getting came from Dublin and I didn't want the supply disrupted. I voted Remain because I know that many of my health services and HCPs come from Republic of Ireland and I didn't wish for patients to suffer. I voted Remain because I know how JiT systems work and they work better with freedom of movement. I voted Remain because I didn't want more tax on my favourite European imports. I voted Remain because of the GFA. I voted Remain because I knew that Leave would cost billions and be a fucking pain in the arse. I voted Remain because I knew my job depended on it.

buckingfrolicks · 16/01/2019 21:41

Define sovereignty please.

1tisILeClerc · 16/01/2019 21:42

{Still waiting for anything positive that leaver's can come up with.}
17,4 million of you that 'won' and you can't say what you have won.

bellinisurge · 16/01/2019 21:43

We got plenty of facts like this in advance. Leave campaign argued it was Project Fear. Either you fell for that or you didn't.

DioneTheDiabolist · 16/01/2019 21:44

What did you know that made you vote Leave Weetabix?

jasjas1973 · 16/01/2019 21:50

Because it's bad enough trying to extricate us now. The longer we are in the worse that will get

Not so, only reason we ve made it hard to leave is because we want the trading benefits of membership without the costs and responsibilities, even NI can solved with 15000 troops and barbed wire.

We could walk away tomo with no-deal, easy as.... but most hard core leavers want a deal/fta... why if we don't need the EU as so many say.

Gaballout · 16/01/2019 21:55

I agree that we had loads of these "facts" during the campaigning. I'm sure I can remember exactly this point.
