Brexit

Can we have a list of all the things we will be able to do once outside the E.U. that we can’t do now

With 11 weeks to go this should be easy but it’s clear from other threads that people still think things that have nothing to do with the E.U. will change when we leave.

Can we have a list of tangible positive things that can only happen by leaving.

So much for less EU low skilled workers equalling more work for locals!

Local Cornish farmer needs 75 flower pickers, can only get 25 = flowers wasting in field, a packing firm hasn't been able to attract a full staffing quota and under new immigration proposals, workers will not be able to go from low to high skilled work as they progress or come back year on year.

Farm work has completely changed in the last decades, no more collecting small bales or mucking out cow sheds, much is now mechanised, many seasonal jobs require some skill and training.

Peregrina · 14/01/2019 13:32

Why is it hilarious? Is it because the present Government has completely ceased to listen? This is much to do with Theresa May who doesn't listen to anyone much, except God, she tells us.

Glitterinmykeyboard · 14/01/2019 13:36

Again. No problem with hiring EU workers AFTER they have tried to hire British workers. If they can’t get the staff then have at it.

Peregrina · 14/01/2019 13:36

A lot of work has completely changed, not just farm work. Back in the 80s working in the Civil service, we had an army of people taking the post and files around. Once the work was computerised most of this disappeared, and the post room was much reduced in size. Just one example. Some jobs won't be mechanised but they are mostly services.

Glitterinmykeyboard · 14/01/2019 13:36

I’ve also got a rant about the toll contracts on Dartford crossing going to the French if anyone’s interested in hearing about that Wink

Elfinablender · 14/01/2019 13:37

If Westminster or even the media had any interest in working class voices, the result wouldn't have been such a shock.

Watching all the TV stations pile up North. "So today, we are in a places called Hartlepool. Am I pronouncing that right, Hart-le-pool"?

Glitterinmykeyboard · 14/01/2019 13:38

@Elfinablender 100%

Or just shutting it down with the usual name calling

jasjas1973 · 14/01/2019 13:42

Well, you should! because outsourcing production to the the far east means those EU workers who normally have been here, now won't be paying into the local economy, the factory won't be paying extra business rates, no longer using locally sourced equipment and supplies etc etc

Not too mention the environmental impact of yet more food miles.

Raab now saying brexit is not about now but for our children.... fucking great!

{I’ve also got a rant about the toll contracts on Dartford crossing going to the French if anyone’s interested in hearing about that wink}
Yes it's called being sold out by the Tory government, a continuing theme and again bugger all to do with the EU.
Similarly French/Chinese/Japanese supposedly building new power stations in the UK. The 'deal' sends a lot of the UK money abroad.
You have been duped by a government that basically doesn't give a shit about you, or anyone really except themselves, some individual MPs excepted.

Peregrina · 14/01/2019 13:46

Isn't it the case that of MPs in Cabinet, of the ones representing English seats, the furthest north is in the West Midlands? This is presumably Karen Bradley who sits for Staffordshire Moorlands.

I used to live there - they were mainly a textile producing area, and even in the late sixties were losing out to firms in the far east, compounded by poor management and lack of investment. The workforce were good and reliable.

Glitterinmykeyboard · 14/01/2019 13:47

I haven’t been duped, I’m aware the government is utterly fucking useless. I know the tolls are nothing to do with the EU.

1tisILeClerc · 14/01/2019 13:48

{Raab now saying brexit is not about now but for our children.... fucking great!}
As shown in N Korea, if you almost starve women they tend not to get pregnant. Maybe that is his plan?

1tisILeClerc · 14/01/2019 13:51

{I haven’t been duped}
But you voted for leave without considering how the UK is going to replace million or so jobs that will be lost in March. I presume you had worked this out before you put a cross on the voting slip?

time4chocolate · 14/01/2019 13:52

And the previous government with 'bigotgate' was just a figment of my imagination then? That's a good example of what happens when people in the North try and get their voices/concerns heard in Westminster.

jasjas1973 · 14/01/2019 13:52

Thats the flaw in Brexit, people putting their faith solely in the UK.

Pre EEC we were hardly a glowing success story, which why we spent 20 years trying to join in.

We need to be in europe, forging its new path and direction, not outside peering in.

Elfinablender · 14/01/2019 13:58

I wasn't even thinking with regard to biogot gate. I do remember when SSI collapsed and 1700 jobs were lost in Redcar and Westminster closed its eyes and ears to the desperate voice of a whole area and muttered something about EU rules...only months before the Brexit vote and still carried on like it was unexplainable that such an area might want to leave the EU.

"I mean, look at all the EU investment", they said. "Look at the wonderful vertical pier and other things that don't bring a shred of dignity to your life".

But yeah, big shock. Tbf, is was for me too because I live a comfortable life, in a different part of a nearby area and walk around in a bubble.

1tisILeClerc · 14/01/2019 14:16

{"I mean, look at all the EU investment", they said. "Look at the wonderful vertical pier and other things that don't bring a shred of dignity to your life".}
You need to understand that although the EU can influence regeneration projects (usually paid as a rebate from the contribution of the UK into the EU) the day to day welfare of citizens is not in the remit of the EU.
There are a lot of very poor people in Greece. Much of their woes came about due to their government being a bit 'loose' with their finances and failing to get the correct tax revenues into the Greek economy. Thus it is to a fair extent 'self inflicted' like the serious downturn the UK will experience starting in March.
While you and your neighbour both pay tax to the government, who makes street repairs and collects bins, you do not influence what your neighbour has for tea. Failure to understand how the world works is a big problem.

Elfinablender · 14/01/2019 14:19

No, I don't need to underatand anything, I voted remain. I'm just saying that Westminster and the media don't give a fuck about offering a platform to working class voices. Those voices need to be represented in good faith, they need to be tackled in good faith and the very least, not say that they should have spoken up earlier when you were actively ignoring them.

Elfinablender · 14/01/2019 14:21

Although my typing and spelling leave room for improvement Grin

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 14/01/2019 14:27

Oh god it's such a fucking nightmare!
The only positive I can really see is the fishing quotas to be honest.
Surely we could have concentrated our government's efforts on changing those without plunging our country into a backward, racist, bankrupt inward looking nation with avocado shortages?!?! 😱😱😱😱
Bastards.

Elfinablender · 14/01/2019 14:30

I'm not sure if I'm making my point well enough here.

The government hid behind the EU when they said that state intervention to save the industry in Redcar would be illegal. So you can see why that area would return a leave vote.

Since then, it's become clear that EU rules in fact wouldn't have prevented State aid.

So you can see why the benefit of being part of the EU might not be exactly plain. The voices from this area were dismissed and ignored and the resolve was plain arse-covering manipulation.

I don't think you can start pointing fingers at the working classes and suggest that they done do enough to engage with Westminster when it treats them so appallingly.

Elfinablender · 14/01/2019 14:31

'didn't do enough'

Namechangeragain01 · 14/01/2019 14:39

How are the working classes supposed to engage more with Westminster?
Apart from voting in GE's, and maybe writing or emailing your MP, how is the average person meant to do it?
I live in an ultra safe Labour seat. Our last MP was great, he actually lived in the area and had done all his life. Under Blair he was deselected and they parachuted in a prospective MP in from London who naturally won the seat.
Most constituents are ignored until election time when the usual flurry of leaflets are posted telling us what a great job they're doing.

time4chocolate · 14/01/2019 14:42

Especially not now since the MC remainers are having these exact same problems with engagement/having their voices heard in Westminster - maybe it's karma.

jasjas1973 · 14/01/2019 14:52

LOL! hardly, the exact opposite is true, Remain MPs dominate Westminster.

Leave or Remain crosses all demographics but why in the 21stC are folk still banging on about class? haven't we moved on?

For me, there is no such thing as middle or working class anymore....Haves and Have nots is a better description of our very unequal society and is at the root of all our problems across europe.
