We are STILL on collision course for no deal.

Christmas is here, and whilst we might appreciate the respite from Brexit News, its really a luxury we can't afford.

The meaningful vote is scheduled for January.

Chaos is scheduled for shortly after.

I wish you all a happy and enjoyable Christmas.

I wrote to mine. He’s going for “managed no deal” Angry

howabout · 18/12/2018 16:35

The overall approach to contingency should reflect the fact that in a no-deal scenario the United Kingdom as from 30 March 2019 would not be bound by any EU rules and could rapidly start diverging from them. Contingency measures will only be taken where strictly
necessary
and in the interest of the European Union and its citizens. This will be in the limited number of cases where current rules do not offer satisfactory solutions to mitigate the most disruptive effects for the European Union and its citizens of a withdrawal without an
agreement. Measures should not put EU companies at a disadvantage compared to their competitors in the United Kingdom. ..
Excerpt from EU's draft contingency plan published in November. Starts to look a lot like managed No Deal, even if it is the EU doing the managing.

The promise of “guidance for citizens” over No Deal Brexit is reminding me of When the Wind Blows.

RIP Hilda and Jim Bloggs.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2018 16:41

Howabout That is a managed No Deal for the EU's benefit,
handling only those (far fewer) things the EU wants
with no consideration of what the UK wants

The UK is assuming in its "managed No Deal" that it will negotiate quickly a lot of minideals with the EU
The EU says there will be NO negotiations:
it will just unilaterally extend the (much fewer) things it wants and ignore all the other stuff the UK wants

bellinisurge · 18/12/2018 16:45

There is no such thing as a managed no deal. It's another fucking unicorn. Please god that stupid phrase isn't going to get any traction.
Sounds like Trump saying "some people call her Pocohontas [Elizabeth Warren]". No, dickwipe, this is just some stupid shit you made up when sat on the toilet.

AwdBovril · 18/12/2018 16:45

PMK. Sad

I don't want to speak to my family this Christmas. Up until a week or so ago, they were still staunchly posting on FB about how a wonderful deal was obviously imminent, they knew what they were voting for, etc, etc. They've all gone quiet now. And I've been looking at the price & storage life of powdered milk, FFS. And considering whether I should buy DD some bits of school uniform a couple of sizes up, while it's still only £4 & actually bloody available.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2018 16:46

"Managed No Deal" means the UK is ramping up its prepping, instead of a disorderly No Deal, which is just going la-la-la instead

The EU will be publishing its No Deal contingency plans tomorrow
They started planning earlier than the UK govt and have far less to worry about
e.g."adequate food"
You can call that "managing" or "prepping" or "contingency planning" but it's the same thing

However, the UK is trying to "manage" jumping over the cliff without a parachute, whereas the EU is "managing" a hike in rough country in the rain.

EtVoilaBrexit · 18/12/2018 16:48

DS(10) is also planning for our repatriation. To a country where he never lived.

I can relate to that too. :(

spacechimp · 18/12/2018 16:51

I've just written back to my (Labour) MP who has recently sent me a long response setting out his position (based on an email survey which he says was mostly completed by Remainers - including me - and doorstep visits to heavily Leave parts of his constituency). It was quite measured, and he says he's asked for an All Party Commission to work together in the national interest, and then says that it's not about 'just having a referendum' but 'giving the people a final say before any deal is ratified' which sounds a bit like a referendum to me...
He says it's unlikely he can support the WA, but I've written back to ask what his alternative is if the WA is rejected, given that the default is 'no-deal' and to ask him to do everything he can to avoid that, including voting for the WA in the absence of anything better

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2018 16:52

Hunt is now saying the UK will "flourish and prosper" if it walks away from the EU in a "manged No Deal",
whereas last year he was saying No Deal would be a disaster^ 🤔

All that's changed in the intervening year, is that he now thinks he has a chance at being the next Tory leader and probably PM,
since May is expected to stand down before 2022

EtVoilaBrexit · 18/12/2018 16:53

Did anyone see the story about this Tory government been the biggest buyer of fridges in the world?

Because 3 small months before Brexit is the right time to start preparing.
Because buying fridges is making the government look professional.
Because putting fear into people about a No Deal is also the right thing to do.
ANd clearly makes them look like they know what they are doing and are prepared for any eventuality Hmm

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2018 16:53

Matthew O'Toolee@MatthewOToole2*

Willingness to seriously countenance no-deal should ordinarily be disqualifying from all high office.
It appears to an essential qualification for the next Tory leader.

TheElementsSong · 18/12/2018 16:53

And

They're Punishing/Bullying Us!

EtVoilaBrexit · 18/12/2018 16:55

What the heck is a ‘managed’ No Deal??
What does it look like?
I’m fed up of people talking about a WA, a No Deal, a managed No Deal wo actually saying what they mean by that. Because most of the time, it seems that actually there are just words that lookgood, sound old but no substance or preparation or even the start of an idea of what it means 🤬🤬🤬

FishesaPlenty · 18/12/2018 16:55

And considering whether I should buy DD some bits of school uniform a couple of sizes up, while it's still only £4 & actually bloody available.

Why would it become any scarcer or more expensive?

Quietrebel · 18/12/2018 16:55

Doesn't feel like we live in a democracy anymore. All this concern over disenfranchising leave voters... How about those of us who are slowly but surely losing faith in our institutions and feel so powerless in the face of politicians' s greed and personal ambition? Whatever we say or vote for will be turned against us 😕

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2018 16:56

"UK govt is biggest buyer of fridges" 😱

They haven't managed yet to find enough foreign ships to hire, iirc,
for their post-Brexit food ferry service, after UK-registered ships can't land anywhere furrin

DarlingNikita · 18/12/2018 17:00

I've written to my MP, again. I've asked what Labour are doing to avoid a No Deal/'managed No Deal’ Brexit and whether they will continue to allow Theresa May to simply run down the clock to the end of March next year, forcing them, and the rest of Parliament, to vote for her shitty WA as some kind of not-quite-as-terrible alternative to no deal at all.

She hardly ever replies, though, and is an arch-Corbynista anyway.

Loletta · 18/12/2018 17:00

spacechimp
My dilemma (and everyone else's who supports Remain and has a Labour MP I guess) is whether to ask my MP to vote for the WA because there really would be no other option if WA is voted down - other than No Deal. It's a game of poker isn't it? Who's going to blink first??

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2018 17:05

Fitch warns UK that rating would be cut in no-deal Brexit

No surprise. I'd expect a severe & prolonged recession.
If Carney's possible drop in GDP of 8% in 2019 happens, I'd call it a bloody Depression

  • my dad was a kid in the last 1920s / 30s, literally hungry & barefoot.
I wonder what will happen to the poorest in the Brexit Depression ?

Ratings agency predicts recession if Britain crashes out of EU

spacechimp · 18/12/2018 17:09

@Loletta - that's essentially what I've just done in my email. It's taken me a while to get to this point, as I've spent the last 2.5 years desperately hoping for Remain or at least EEA/Soft Brexit, but I'm really scared of No Deal, and the WA is the only option that I can see

I can't even put into words how I feel about this government and most of the opposition at this point

1tisILeClerc · 18/12/2018 17:10

{What the heck is a ‘managed’ No Deal??
What does it look like?}
Putting on incontinence pants before jumping out of an aeroplane with no parachute.

MissMalice · 18/12/2018 17:12

I fell into the depths of Leavers Twitter earlier. I expected to find praise for the buying of fridges but no, they’re saying that is project fear. The pound having already tanked is project fear because we haven’t left yet. Challenged a couple to back up their claims about EU and about UK being better off and of course they couldn’t.

bellinisurge · 18/12/2018 17:12

@Loletta - I've blinked. They should support the WA. This is just stupid now.
