Red Ken was indeed one of the architects of TFL. Since it formation, bus passenger use has doubled. Bus drivers pay went up a fair bit under Ken, as did the transport system around London. However, the congestion charge was introduced the same time, which may have contributed to more people using the public transport network, which was one of the aims I guess.

Ken Livingstone also declines a knighthood or an honour of some kind because he didn’t believe in it. At least he had stuck to his principles, unlike some politicians.
He was also a Londoner and used public transport with us minions..

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 13/12/2018 17:34

The justifications of a PV are that the vote was marred by illegal Leave activities and that public opinion has changed.

But what has been done to address the illegal activities, let alone stop them from happening again?

Today I put my parents Xmas tree up for them. It was only half way through that I realised the colour scheme was definitely pro eu with its colours of gold and blue ( plus silver). My Remainer parents won’t mind but I do hope that it pisses my Brexiteer brother off when he visits them!

oooh, bees that gives me an idea.
I have window stick-on-foil stars. might arrange them accordingly on the window.

Think you've just had a bad day... You obviously care too much to inflict such a blow on the people you want to help... nothing justifies the chaos of no deal. Not even red unicorns.

MissMalice · 13/12/2018 17:47

Heavens no - a no deal situation would make their situations even worse.

lonelyplanetmum · 13/12/2018 17:57

Maybe a no deal brexit is what's needed to recalibrate societal expectations?

I think Remainers ( myself included) have shifted over the last two years. I started with disbelief, anger and sheer incredulity that politicians like Farage, BoJo and JRM could lead the country on such an exercise of self harm. Now I have several hours a day where I accept maybe the nemesis stage is unstoppable, and perhaps will result in some recalibration.

Hazardswan · 13/12/2018 18:03

mrs

You've had a bad day. Cake

turnipsaretheonlyveg · 13/12/2018 18:04

I don't know, it depends what the normal after recalibration is. Living in the US makes me concerned about what people will accept as normal human behavior.

JediJim · 13/12/2018 18:12

The MPs either accept TMs proposal. Or we leave with no deal.
Surely anyone that voted leave would rather we left with a deal. There are no other options.
The remainer voters should be careful what they wish for.
There will be no second referendum by the looks of it.

bellinisurge · 13/12/2018 18:15

@JediJim , Remain voter hoping MPs see sense and accept TM Withdrawal Agreement. Anything is better than no deal. Even a shit deal.

RedToothBrush · 13/12/2018 18:18

A recalibration of social expectations?

You mean we should expect a return to the victorian era pre animal cruel laws, pre child cruelty laws, the return of the workhouse and slums with people living on the streets and victorian levels of crime. Of course there were no public prosecutions back then, as the police were private and there were only private prosecution so justice was only for the rich. Education was only for the rich too. Oh and don't forget the optimum dens and brothels. And victorian puritan religious morality.

Yes I really think we should adjust our expectations for that. I mean, if we were to dream about what that would look like in modern times it would look like...

Oh. Yes.

The USA.

Had a £10 bet with my dad today. Also a remainer but more of a pessimist than me. My stake is for eventual remain via PV or revoke.
My Dad thinks he will win either way ie be happy if I win the bet.

Ps tried going to the bookies a week ago No luck though , no bet I could do in Paddy power.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 13/12/2018 18:40

James Patrick
@J_amesp
Personally, my impression is that May will run Parliament towards the no deal wall in order to secure her deal. A game of chicken writ ludicrous. However, at the last moment, if this gambit doesn’t function, she will revoke Article 50. She’s bold, but not mad

However, even with that being said, the risk of something getting in the way is so substantial that the likelihood of a no deal Brexit should be considered as absolute by everyone at this point.

With that comes the need to not add burden to services or supplies from now.

If you have not already, please Google and download Getting Ready Together, adapted from the national Swedish guidance and do take the time to listen to #TheFall podcast with me and
@GuyDorrellEsq

Remember: We have a long history of being taken by surprise by predictable events

And as Guy and I have been saying for months: no one ever came to harm by being over-prepared.

Do not contribute to likely panic buying in March and please do be alive to the fact the worst case scenario is fully supported by Government and EU notices on no deal.

Good luck.

Buteo · 13/12/2018 18:48

Surely anyone that voted leave would rather we left with a deal.

Plenty of Leavers dismiss the ramifications of No Deal as scaremongering.

I have spent several hours stuck in a car today explaining to my far right Leave voting mother what No Deal would mean and how the ERG are telling half truths on how it would work.

She doesn’t believe me and all I get is JRM and Johnson soundbites about supplicants and vassal states and EU punishments.

Icantreachthepretzels · 13/12/2018 18:54

Also - I know linguistics isn't Brexiteers strong suit(e ?) but surely "bullying" is when a larger opponent overwhelms a smaller opponent by sheer force or position ? How does that play into the "Bloody Great British" myth ?

Schroedinger's Britain innit? We are both the plucky little underdog being pushed around by the nasty EU and a great and lordly behemoth striding the globe and getting lesser countries to fall at our feet and throw trade deals in our direction.
Brexiteers get past the cognitive dissonance that such a position requires by not actually bothering to think.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/12/2018 18:59

The hard right are often anarchists - read Steve Bannon in the US

They want to destroy what they regard as a leftwing society society and rebuild acording to their merciless hard right principles

so no welfare state, no workers' rights of any kind, no human rights unless you are rich, no environmental laws ...

BigChocFrenzy · 13/12/2018 19:07

Mrsr8 You are providing a service which saves people from hunger and total despair
You show them that someone cares, maybe the only person in their lives who does and can effectively help.

A No Deal Brexit would only solve the problems of some of your clients, in the sense of Social Darwinism:
The poorest would suffer the most and some would probably die
Many JAMs won't be able to manage any more and would be added to your current clients

You would have problems getting enough donations, as worried people keep food for their own families first,
but there would be far more people needing Food Banks.

Just keep on keeping on Mrsr8 you are making a difference.

RedToothBrush · 13/12/2018 19:36

You represent the hope for others Mrs8.

Don't underestimate the value of that.

You might someone who is inspired by your example.

I saw this tweet by Obama this morning, and I think it's very apt for what you just said:

Barack Obama @ barackobama
As Bobby Kennedy taught us, the thing about hope is that it travels through space and time, first splashing against the rocks, but eventually breaking down the walls of cruelty and injustice. And if we do our best with the time we’re given, others will take hope in our example.

The thing with hope is it is infectious. It has the essence which keeps people going beyond the point at which you'd expect them to just give up. It's the tiniest ember still glowing or the small chink of light in the darkness.

YOU are the hope that others need.
