As long as we are both agreed Tony Blair and Nick Clegg are in fact Tories Bigchoc.

howabout · 12/12/2018 16:43

If the Deal is defeated by Parliament on all sides, as looks likely I don't see how either side can legitimately promote it in a Referendum.

The Choice is then No Deal (perhaps finessed by talk of future Canada +) vs Remain

Unless you take the view TM retains legitimacy even after all this and can go above Parliament to implement the WA. I doubt Parliament would vote for a Referendum on those terms.

RedToothBrush · 12/12/2018 16:43

Laura Kuenssberg @bbclaurak
MPs increasingly expecting promises that May has made to them in one to one meetings to be repeated at the 1922 meeting, starting in half an hour - I'm told she has said to individuals that she won't fight the next election

The ERG and Corbyn are all lying if they claim they can get a deal without backstop

I certainly agree with this. I actually think they all (as in all MPs) know full well that, given how unpopular the WA seems, the only options are no deal or remain. But they are too frightened to put that to the public. ERG and their ilk don't want to risk remain and the opposite side don't want to risk no deal.

Jim Pickard @pickardje
One loyalist minister: "I'm bloody angry, I think I've got more in common with people like Hilary Benn and Liz Kendall than the Brexit lot, I'm sorry I'm in the same party as them."

Tories are people who are members of the Conservative party, they have traditionally been a reasonably broad church.
The same could also be said of the Labour Party.
The smaller parties maybe have less variation in them.
The issue of Brexit cuts across traditional parties lines so it seems sensible to imagine that the solution may be found by doing the same.

We tried figuring out what the Theresa May confidence vote means for Brexit and ... oh, fuck it, take a look.

Tom Rayner @ raynerskynews
Tory MPs are now gathering at the door of committee room 14 ahead of the PM’s address. One loyal former minister says: “the only thing I’m 100% confident about is that many of my colleagues are liars”

turnips this is at the heart of my push back against what Bigchoc is saying. If Brexit cuts across Party Lines then it is naive to characterise it as a minor side Project of the Right Wing of the Tory Party aided and abetted by UKIP.

If it were, over 17m people would not have voted Leave. Unless you actually believe more than half of voters were both stupid and highly motivated to vote.

DGRossetti · 12/12/2018 16:58

One loyal former minister says: “the only thing I’m 100% confident about is that many of my colleagues are liars”

Something he shares with the general public then.

DGRossetti · 12/12/2018 17:00

Unless you actually believe more than half of voters were both stupid and highly motivated to vote.

Bearing in mind until Cameron made it a Big Issue, the polling showed that general 6% of the electorate cited "the EU" as something they felt strongly about, then I can believe that .....

icannotremember · 12/12/2018 17:00

17m people would not have voted Leave. Unless you actually believe more than half of voters were both stupid and highly motivated to vote

Why is this hard to believe?

O.K, this is an epidemic now: France’s government will face a no confidence vote in parliament on Thursday, AFP reports

Brian Cox @ profbriancox
My hope is that May wins her confidence vote 52:48 and concludes that the will of the Party must therefore be the absolute opposite of what the 48 wanted and withdraws A50, causing the ERG to retreat into a leathery private club to console themselves with a game of soggy biscuit.

Difficult to argue with.

howabout · 12/12/2018 17:04

Just goes to show you can't trust the polls DGR Grin - that was Cameron's mistake - he even won the 2015 election by mistake and ended up having to deliver Austerity on stilts and the EU Referendum.

He had calculated on Clegg losing fewer different seats.

That buzzfeed flow chart is both informative and absolute hell.

Anxiety eating has continued.

Greek salad for lunch tho so I could pretend I'm healthy. Healthy means healthy. It's my healthy or no healthy. A healthy for jobs, a healthy for families, a healthy for us all. I will not be swayed that my Greek salad was not healthy because my Greek salad is Greek salad and that is healthy.

Homemade pizza for tea. It'll be the pizzaist of pizzas, the only pizza we're going to have. If I don't make and eat this pizza then there will be no pizza. It would be undemocratic not to have pizza because me and DP voted for pizza. Pasta is not pizza, pizza is pizza.

Hmm Have I got brexititis?

And yes I am happy to share the pizza Grin

icannot because ime stupidity is equally divided between Remainers and Leavers as evidenced by chief Remain architects Cameron and Osborne.

GD12 · 12/12/2018 17:08

How about we have a referendum on a 2nd referendum?

Hazardswan · 12/12/2018 17:08

Was France feeling left out? Had to just join in....

colouringinpro · 12/12/2018 17:08

hazardswan serious anxiety eating here too Confused

howabout · 12/12/2018 17:08

Red don't panic on France. Apparently this is just the few dog end parties not in en Marche sabre rattling. However exposes the complete lack of checks and balances given the demise of party structure.

Jury out on whether Macron concessions lead to France being in breach of Maastricht deficit conditions - Italy being castigated for this.

WhatWouldScoobyDoo · 12/12/2018 17:09

Pizza please hazard Grin

DGRossetti · 12/12/2018 17:10

icannot because ime stupidity is equally divided between Remainers and Leavers as evidenced by chief Remain architects Cameron and Osborne.

The thing is Remain stupidity had far less serious consequences than Leave stupidity. What's the worse that could have happened ? We carry on as we were, and if things aren't brilliant in a few years, we can try again, not having burned the house down to try and remove a spider.
