AIBU to think that if the government stopped or paused Brexit, it is highly unlikely there would be massive 'civil' unrest ?

I have heard people say that if Brexit was stopped or even paused there would be riots and mass civil unrest as a result. I honestly don't think there would be, I know a lot of people would be annoyed or angry.

Would any leave voter on here seriously consider rioting ?

Since somewhere in the region of 65% of the population either voted remain or weren't eligible to vote that's probably a fair assertion Davros. It doesn't mean the number was meaningless though - their voices are as important as the increasing minority that still claim they're the majority.

BakedBeans47 · 13/11/2018 08:51

I know a mid 80s Remain voter. Only one, sadly.

My grandad was 92 at the date of the referendum and voted remain

BertrandRussell · 13/11/2018 08:55

I'm not 80 but closer to 80 than 30 and I and my entire circle of friends voted remain. My ds was in Year 11 at the time -they had a mock referendum abd came out massively for leave-even though many people in the year had benefitted hugely from Erasmus and understood where the funding had come from. Struck me at the time as a metaphor for the real thing. Do I mean metaphor? Probably not....

QuizzlyBear · 13/11/2018 08:56

Personally I'd rather endure a few weeks/months of riots than have my children's futures fucked over for the next 50 years. But that's just me.

BackInTime · 13/11/2018 08:58

What a joke it all is - we have been most spectacularly done over by a few rich boys who want to be richer, a nasty press, and lazy governments who couldn’t be bothered to apply EU rules to circumvent some of the problems that have come with freedom of movement (a lot of benefits come with it too obviously).

Seriously...why bother voting. yabvvu.

lonelyplanetmum · 13/11/2018 09:03

why bother voting.

What do you mean why bother voting? Do you mean in any election, or the 1970s vote to join the EU, the 2016 referendum to explore the possibility of leaving or the next vote to address the detail of any deal?

JosephineDupont · 13/11/2018 09:07

Londonrach I know exactly what you mean.

surferjet · 13/11/2018 09:09

I never voted to join the EU?
Neither did anyone under about 55 Hmm

lonelyplanetmum · 13/11/2018 09:15

So we belong or belonged to:

United Nations

UN Security Council

NATO

Council of Europe

European Union

Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe

Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)

	International Monetary Fund

	World Trade Organisation

	Interpol

Which ones should we be able to vote on? Just those that cause an internal rift in the Tory party?

longwayoff · 13/11/2018 09:16

Brexit is just the beginning. Thus dictators arise and civil wars begin.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 13/11/2018 09:20

Of course there won’t be any civil unrest if Brexit was cancelled.
People will sigh with relief and that will be it.
Some will rant out of habit and because they feel they ought to, but that will be it.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 13/11/2018 09:22

In contrast, if a no deal Brexit goes ahead there will be unrest because ot wil lead to a catastrophe and lowering of standards of life.

Talkstotrees · 13/11/2018 09:24

Are some posters suggesting that their votes had no consequence? As far as I am aware, our Government is still determined to follow through on the result of the EU ref. Despite the accepted negative impact (admitted this morning by another senior figure, this time our Deputy Prime Minister).

Other affects of the result include a sizeable drop in the value of £, increasing prices of imported goods, loss of EMA and other important shared scientific & arts projects, loss of inward investment due to Brexit uncertainty, loss of jobs as companies move some or all operations to EU countries. The rest of the world (apart from the growing but small number of ultra right wing nutters) thinks we’ve lost the plot - the damage done to our international reputation is unlikely to be repaired within my lifetime. Just wait until the shit really hits the fan.

Please don’t be under any illusion that your votes had no impact.

lonelyplanetmum · 13/11/2018 09:26

It's interesting actually. We are (or were)very involved internationally I bet Raab is surprised by this.

I also wonder which ones Jacob Rees Mogg wishes to retain and which he wishes to relinquish.

I wonder if We should have had a full vote on all international cooperation that his group doesn't like really.

JosephineDupont · 13/11/2018 09:27

No one ever voted to join the EU.

lonelyplanetmum · 13/11/2018 09:32

I'm genuinely interested -which of the listed international organisations warrant a people's vote about retaining or relinquishing membership?

Talkstotrees · 13/11/2018 09:34

No one ever voted to join the EU.

Apart from our elected representatives.

JosephineDupont · 13/11/2018 09:34

I'm now also suspecting your use of vocabulary.
"genuinely interested" - gwan now!

Hoppinggreen · 13/11/2018 09:35

The likes of Tommy Robinson and his racist chums might kick off a bit butbI doubt there would be actual riots

JosephineDupont · 13/11/2018 09:39

Talkstothetrees:

Well my point was made in return to surferjet where the voting of the UK electorate was implied. But yes the government of the day took us into EEC / Euratom / European coal and steel Community in 73.

lonelyplanetmum · 13/11/2018 09:43

I really am interested because it's a thought I've only just had. We belong to so many international organisations.

I bet Jacob Rees Mogg dislikes quite a few of those memberships. Yet Cameron called this nightmare vote to pacify that Tory group on one issue alone.its illogical. There should ,at least, have been a vote on the entire list of things JRM's group don't like iyswim.

JosephineDupont · 13/11/2018 09:44

Ok

Staringcoat · 13/11/2018 09:44

JosephineDupont we didn't have a referendum but every change in the EU Treaty since 1973 (Maastricht, Lisbon etc) has had to be approved by the UK. Both labour and conservative governments decided that this should be done by vote in tbe houses of parliament and not by referenda. But we, the UK, have agreed each change theough the process of parliamentary democracy.

JosephineDupont · 13/11/2018 09:45

I am aware of that.
