AIBU to think that if the government stopped or paused Brexit, it is highly unlikely there would be massive 'civil' unrest ?

I have heard people say that if Brexit was stopped or even paused there would be riots and mass civil unrest as a result. I honestly don't think there would be, I know a lot of people would be annoyed or angry.

Would any leave voter on here seriously consider rioting ?

I think if you look back at other situations where there has been a coercive bloc that makes it impossible to leave, then, yes, there will be civil unrest on a large scale. The USSR was the same and civil unrest eventually brought them down in Eastern Europe.

FaFoutis · 12/11/2018 12:39

It gets 'redone' at the next general election. Of course.

bellinisurge · 12/11/2018 12:40

Let the whiny fuckers have their shouty riot and end up in prison as a consequence for public disorder.
Criminal record suits you, if you want to riot.

frumpety · 12/11/2018 12:41

I just cannot see the people I know who voted leave taking to the streets to protest in a violent manner. At least one of them has changed their mind for a start and the others really aren't the rioting type.

Are you comparing membership of the EU to the USSR BOJO ?

I suspect rioting will be considerably worse if we have food shortages or a massive increase in food prices. I used to teach history a million years ago. Pretty much all revolutions seemed to be triggered by the above.

bellinisurge · 12/11/2018 12:51

Any government that leads us deliberately to food shortages will pay a heavy price.

There would be no riot, a protest maybe.

arethereanyleftatall · 12/11/2018 12:57

I voted leave. I wouldn't riot.

I'm disappointed with the whole thing. I wish we were never in the eu, and now more so than ever, but since we basically cant get a good leave deal, we may just not be able to. Mind, Goodness only knows what those unvoted for eu leaders would have in store for us if we change our minds anyway.

TheCupboardUnderTheStairs · 12/11/2018 12:57

Is this another attempt to convince yourself that Brexit won't happen?

I like the way Remoaners have marched to the moon and back, but your suggestion that Leave should voice their opinions and it becomes a riot.

Lets just wait until the EU falls apart and then we can just walk away without paying a penny.

bellinisurge · 12/11/2018 13:01

@TheCupboardUnderTheStairs - I am not trying to convince myself that Brexit won't happen. It will and Leavers, like silly toddlers, will blame everyone but themselves when their childish ideas don't come to pass. When, in fact, the exact opposite comes to pass.

SusanWalker · 12/11/2018 13:02

I think riots would be possible, fuelled on SM by the likes of TR.

However I think riots are also just as likely if there are shortages of medicines or a rapid increase in food prices, not matched by an increase in wages/benefits. If we get children dying from lack of insulin or isotopes for chemo then that would spark something off I think. The amount of people willing to riot over democracy would be far outnumbered by the amount of people willing to riot over dying children.

TheCupboardUnderTheStairs · 12/11/2018 13:03

Has it occured the Leavers have an opinion. Not your opinion.

Have you been up North to see the little investment we have received over 40 years ?

bellinisurge · 12/11/2018 13:04

I live up North@TheCupboardUnderTheStairs . I'm from up North. I lived through Thatcher. As a teenager.
Don't need sermons about fucked over communities. I'm from one.

arethereanyleftatall · 12/11/2018 13:05

Good point @TheCupboardUnderTheStairs
Remainers marched peacefully, brexiters would riot. Lol.

SusanWalker · 12/11/2018 13:05

I'm not talking about marches and demos. Those are fundamental parts of democracy and if brexit was cancelled i think brexiteers would have every right to march. Rioting is a different thing altogether.

bellinisurge · 12/11/2018 13:06

March away. March all you like. That's not a riot. I don't think it is and nor does anyone else. If your EDL mates start up, though, you can't guarantee it won't get violent.

MeteorMedow · 12/11/2018 13:07

If they paused it, there would be disgruntled people but no riots or real unsettled issues.

If they stopped it then yes probably as democracy would have indeed fallen. I’m not a leaver but the country did vote to leave. Right or wrongly, misinformed or not - if a public vote were over ruled it would cause absoloute chaos and a lack of trust in government.

Kintan · 12/11/2018 13:08

I think there would be more happy celebrations than riots tbh.

bellinisurge · 12/11/2018 13:09

The country did not vote to leave, though. A poorly constructed referendum saw just over a third of the electorate vote Leave. Just under a third voted Remain. The rest? Fuck knows?
That's not the democratic will of the peppy. It's an X Factor vote.

BarbarianMum · 12/11/2018 13:09

Any government that leads us deliberately to food shortages will pay a heavy price.

No, because they'll blame the EU for being mean. And the idiots who voted for Brexit in the first place will believe them. These are not people with the greatest critical thinking skills (otherwise we'd have Brexit with a plan other than "create chaos and seek opportunities").

bellinisurge · 12/11/2018 13:10

Peppy? People!

@bellinisurge Surely the people who didn't vote don't care either way so are happy to go with the majority?
