AIBU to think that if the government stopped or paused Brexit, it is highly unlikely there would be massive 'civil' unrest ?

I have heard people say that if Brexit was stopped or even paused there would be riots and mass civil unrest as a result. I honestly don't think there would be, I know a lot of people would be annoyed or angry.

Would any leave voter on here seriously consider rioting ?

Well the leave vote has certainly shaken things up a bit but unfortunately it has probably wrecked the UK for many years to come, so there won't be the money to actually address the things they (mostly) voted for.

Imissgmichael · 15/11/2018 14:37

PS Smile my husband and the friend I was talking about are happy to be called West Indian or Black , or should I tell them that they’re wrong? They wouldn’t take kindly to being dictated to.

The point I’m making is that anyone can be racist and yep sometimes immigrants can bring their prejudices with them. Only someone very niave would think otherwise.

Anyway, far to often leave voters are labelled as racist just for voting leave and for many they mean that leave voters don’t like anyone who is an immigrant or who’s parents/GPs were immigrants. I’ve seen this view time and time again on the internet and in real life. I’ve been asked many times how could I vote leave when your DH isn’t white and DH has received similar comments. That’s why I meantioned my DH and if that’s not what posters meant fair enough but let’s not pretend that’s not how some think.

PPS Smile, not all voters voted leave due to immigration.

I’m sure you know what I meant Smile, your just deliberately misunderstanding.

I know what you mean Bellini, my friend got an awful shock. Don’t think he will be repeating the experience.

Imissgmichael · 15/11/2018 14:41

Back to the OP. I don’t think there will be rioting.

I think I will now go and see what the deal actually is. Can anyone recommend a reliable source.

bellinisurge · 15/11/2018 14:43

@Imissgmichael - the only time I've ever got into a fight was when a black female friend was set upon by some wankers in broad daylight in an EEuropean country.
We punched and kicked our way out of it. She told me it was pretty normal for her in that country. Luckily she had a group of locals as friends who usually went in to bat for her in similar situations.

Imissgmichael · 15/11/2018 14:54

Bellini that’s awful (but I’m not suprised). Hope she wasn’t badly hurt.

bellinisurge · 15/11/2018 14:58

Not that time @Imissgmichael . Horrible for her to live through- awesome woman. Glad she had some local mates.

Peregrina · 15/11/2018 15:35

If we say that the Leave voters who were against immigration were only 15% then that would have been sufficient to swing the vote to Leave.

Imissgmichael · 15/11/2018 15:48

Anyone think this will get passed Parliament? Seems unlikely.

Momasita · 15/11/2018 18:09

Mestophelies apprentice that's the nub, your first comment on 12 /11.

What options will there be if not via peaceful voting.

Stopping brexit now will undermine our system of government. It will rock politics to the core and make a sham and mockery out of it.

That will lead to civil unrest.

Peregrina · 15/11/2018 18:28

Stopping brexit now will undermine our system of government.

The behaviour of the Tory party of the last 2 years has undermined our system of Government, particularly their behaviour in the last two days. At one time a Minister caught doing something wrong or making a bad error of judgement would resign, now they just lie their way out of it.

Labour needn't crow either, too much fence sitting and far too little opposing from them.

bellinisurge · 15/11/2018 19:00

If the Sky poll is to be believed, going ahead with Brexit is the minority view now.

lonelyplanetmum · 15/11/2018 19:19

Stopping brexit now will undermine our system of government

But referendums aren't a regular part of our system of government? When they are careful high thresholds are normally set. Also this referendum was announced to be advisory only. Normally prior to referenda such as in Scotland a detailed plan is produced first. This was really a mandate to look into leaving.

Also our system of government has been undermined by a cabinet who tried to trigger Article 50 without due Parliamentary process, also Embarked upon legislation without producing impact assessments first and introduced single ministerial legislative Henry VIII powers.

Yaralie · 15/11/2018 20:10

What would be undemocratic about letting the people chose between TM's bad deal which would make us worse off than we are now, a catastrophic "no-deal" which would devastate our economy for the next fifty years (accortding to JRM) or staying as we are in the EU?

KennDodd · 15/11/2018 21:55

That will lead to civil unrest

Even if Brexit is overturned by another referendum once voters have a clearer picture of what they'll actually get?

I think we will have violence if Brexit is overturned, even by another referendum, the far right would be straight out on the streets. I think if we have another referendum there could well be violence around polling stations. I think our biggest mistake as a nation was to have a referendum on this in the first place, but I suppose we get what we vote for.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 15/11/2018 21:57

That will lead to civil unrest.

Nah.

No one will riot to be worse off.

People will when they become worse off because of Brexit. Get real.

Moussemoose · 15/11/2018 22:23

Brexit has already undermine our system of government. Brexit has already caused chaos. How much more proof do you want that this is a ludicrous idea?

StealthPolarBear · 15/11/2018 22:24

I live near Sunderland. I'd be worried.

Momasita · 15/11/2018 23:11

Chardonnay many people voted brexit because their financial situation and quality of life had plummeted with Blair closer ties to the eu.

"Chardonnay many people voted brexit because their financial situation and quality of life had plummeted with Blair closer ties to the eu."

Except up until 2014/15 the EU was a low priority in voters eyes.

I'm afraid the politicians involved with leave disingenuously tied the issues that arose due to the financial crisis to the EU, in reality the reason the UK was so badly hit is because of its ties globally.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 16/11/2018 09:09

Does it come down to immigration, Momasita?

I despise Blair for many reasons, but I think even he would be better in today’s situation. What’s the world come to...

I feel grubby now.

1tisILeClerc · 16/11/2018 09:21

{Chardonnay many people voted brexit because their financial situation and quality of life had plummeted with Blair closer ties to the eu.}
No, it is the fact that few are prepared to put real thought into what is really going on. Ties with the EU and the leadership of Blair (or indeed most other leaders) are only very loosely related.
As EU contributions are only 0.7% of GDP, that leaves 99.3% for the government of the day to play with.
With the gutter press and too many 'anti EU' politicians continuing to rubbish anything the EU suggests they become the scapegoat.
Failure to inquire and THINK has caused the situation we are in.

Tanith · 16/11/2018 09:36

What are you talking about, Mornista?!

Tony Blair stood down from PM in 2007. The financial crash was 2008/2009. The Referendum was in 2016, almost 10 years after the Blair Government.

Austerity caused people to vote Leave.

1tisILeClerc · 16/11/2018 10:02

{Austerity caused people to vote Leave.}
And a continual stream of poor government decisions for many years. If you take the 'peak' of the British Empire, about 150 years ago, the 'value' of that status has been gradually diminished over the last 150 years such that even the 4 core countries of the union are getting opposed to Westminster. Spectacular bad management.
Greed and power from Westminster, and to hell with the rest.

bellinisurge · 16/11/2018 10:21

If people voted Leave because they were sick of austerity there will be a whole heap of economic shit heading their way if we crash out. My sympathy for people who want this and get financially screwed by a crash out? Zero.
