Westministenders: Deadline Day #1

We have hit another Deadline Day.

As it stands, the EU are looking for more progress. May is digging in her heels by suggesting there is new a requirement for backstop to a backstop. The backstop to all intents and purposes is the GFA. So May is saying in effect, that the EU are forcing her to put in provisions to protect an international agreement we are signed up to, and if we breech it we risk peace in NI.

After lots of noise it seems that the Cabinet have decided to stick by May. For now.

The EU look like they are talking as if their meeting next month will exclude the UK and just go straight to No Deal planning.

There is also other talk of alternatives to allow the UK to stay in the customs union. But theres not much to that and it still doesn't solve the ERG and the DUP problem.

May is vastly unestimating how much the ERG and the DUP want to break the GFA. Which is a huge misjudgment.

There is also talk of the final final Deadline Day actually being Dec 13. For various reasons its not. Thats 29th March.

So Wednesday is Deadline Day #1. Expect more.

a virtual border with all vehicles that use the border regularly having an electronic tag so they don't have to stop at the border and all without the tag having to report to a border post. I know this then wouldn't be an”open” border but it would be for Irish residents. If tariffs are introduced then they could be marked against commercial

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2018 13:03

Ok, so how and where do you do the checks to see that no one is lying about their goods? How do you police this, and ensure its not a terrorist target? And how do you set up this computerised tag system in time?

GFA does not need ref to be tweaked,

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2018 13:05

I have to admit it:

EU berets are hideous.

No one looks good in them.
No one.

Sorry!

cameras and sensors will check tags on vehicles and ARPN, that kind of thing - doesn't need to all be done by March 2019

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2018 13:06

GFA does not need ref to be tweaked

Errrr ok...

So the Norway-Sweden model is one to emulate Hmm

Here are some pesky facts about the Norway-Sweden border (and other borders with the EU): www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-44054594

There are hard borders in all these examples - even with a "light touch" Confused.

You need to come up with something better threetrees Hmm

Buteo · 20/10/2018 13:07

Do you mean a border like the Norway / Sweden border?

Like this, at the Svinesund bridge?

_ Motorway ‘no Irish no gay’ banner branded despicable_

This is what happens when the DUP are allowed to run rampant
Unionist triumphalism and the "Papes" put in their place

www.itv.com/news/utv/2018-10-19/motorway-no-irish-no-gay-banner-branded-despicable/

A “no Irish, no gay” banner which appeared on a bridge of the A1 motorway near Lurgan in Co Armagh
has been condemned as “despicable”.
...
A PSNI spokeswoman said: "Police received a report of an offensive banner on a bridge over the M1 motorway between junctions nine and 10.

“Officers have removed the banner and the matter is being treated as a hate incident with a racial and homophobic motive.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2018 13:11

Meanwhile, reports that a house was firebombed by Loyalists in Magherafelt, because a Catholic mother and child were living there

threetrees · 20/10/2018 13:13

PB: yep, that Norway to Sweden route looks fine in BBC link - and as it clearly states, people can cross with the minimum of fuss - it's obviously the way to go

threetrees · 20/10/2018 13:14

buteo@ no worse than regular rush hr traffic

just a normal day IOW

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2018 13:17

Big difference between people and goods

Delays for goods at the Norway-Sweden border are 1-2 hours

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2018 13:17

Free speech gives the right to to express your opinion

It does not mean the right to make others believe you, or to stop them laughing at you.

It does not mean the right to make others stop expressing their opinion.

prettybird · 20/10/2018 13:20

Did you actually read the link? Confused

...average wait of 20 minutes at the main crossing for a 10th of the traffic that goes through Dover.

With customs posts that would breach the principles of the GFA.

I'll echo Red - Riiiiighht Hmm

threetrees · 20/10/2018 13:21

truckers have to wait in line for long periods even when no border - it's part of the job

but really this is the crux: the Remainers will only portray negativity towards any solution or idea that attempts to make Brexit succeed - the ONLY objective a Remainer has is to keep Britain inside the EU

threetrees · 20/10/2018 13:22

PB: so what, the GFA will have to be ammended then

prettybird · 20/10/2018 13:25

....and that's for a country that is in the Single Market but not the CU Hmm.

Delays for a country that is only in the CU are three to twenty four hours. Hmm

Struggling to see how you can see this as frictionless Confused

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2018 13:25

What enables FOM (people) between Norway and Sweden is that Norway belongs to EEA / EFTA and Sweden to the EU.

Sothey both belong to the Single Market
This also means much fewer goods checks between the 2 countries
BUT as Norway is not in the Customs Union, there are some checks

The NI backstop would also mean that NI would belong to both the Single Market and Customs Union
So this would mean no change from today, no hard border
BUT
that is only with the backstop

if the UK chooses EEa / EFTA + a Customs Union, then the whole UK could enjoy frictionless trade and no hard borders with the EU

threetrees · 20/10/2018 13:25

BCF: that's utter garbage and you know it - left wingers do not allow the right any form of opinion expression other than a few hrs - my posts and user account will be zipped within minutes/hrs

the very same reason as to why your side lost the referendum , ie. lack of listening to other people's opinions

Buteo · 20/10/2018 13:25

Border checks are still necessary. Cars entering Norway are stopped and drivers asked for their destination and the purpose of their visit. There are border posts with barriers and cameras.

230,000 vehicles are stopped annually on the Norway - Sweden border.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2018 13:28

Trees That's a ridiculous allegation against MNHQ

Your posts will not be deleted unless they break the MN guidelines of personal attacks etc
Look back at your posts and check this

btw, several posters here are right of centre, or centre, not left at all.
Corbyn is very unpopular here, as you may have norticed

prettybird · 20/10/2018 13:28

Ah, the "we don't like an international treaty that took 20 years to negotiate and that the people of the island of Ireland voted for, so let's just change it" argument. Hmm

It's not a "tweak", it's a full-scale re-write.

And you expect this to happen by March 2019?

Riiiiggght Hmm

Buteo · 20/10/2018 13:30

Truckers have to wait in line for long periods even when no border - it's part of the job

Where are all these trucks waiting in line on a regular basis?

And no, roadworks and accidents don’t count.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2018 13:31

Currently, vehicles are not stopped on the NI border (unless suspected of something by the PSNI or HMRC)

Goods vehicles travelling between Britain and the mainland EU, e.g. at the channel ports, are only delayed 6 seconds, just long enough to see which country they come from

The NI backstop would keep the free flow of goods
and the whole Uk in EEA / EFTA + a Customs Union would keep the free flow for the rest of teh UK
