I'm guessing surfer won't start another thread as the questions were getting a bit difficult on the last one. 😂

Thought this was worthy of discussion though

So it turns out those pesky EU immigrants actually contribute more than the average UK citizen.

Who knew 🤔

If an Italian is ‘just passing through’ so to speak, of course he has no rights as to the future of a country he has no loyalty to.
That’s not saying EU workers are unwelcome or irrelevant, of course they are! they bring millions to our economy & enrich our lives in many ways.
But for many of them the UK will never be their permanent home, they’re just here for a few years & then they’ll bugger off.
Why should they have a say in our future?
And as for the ones who have been here years & will probably stay, why haven’t they applied for UK citizenship?
You can’t have your cake & eat it.

@Surfer
No one has a permanent home. We start out as dust and return to dust.
Your attitude disgusts me.

Bearbehind · 27/09/2018 17:01

Most unusually, I actually agree with the principle of what surfer is saying.

You can't have a situation when people from everywhere get a say in the affairs of everywhere else. That includes the UK, the EU and the rest of the world.

The fact is, no one should have had a say in this because the referendum should never have been allowed.

Surfer
Actually curious to know if you agree with giving Commonwealth citizens a right to vote in general elections or the referendum?
By your reasoning it's wrong, isn't it?

surferjet · 27/09/2018 18:04

1tisILeClerc

Are you Neil from the young ones?

Fawful · 27/09/2018 18:09

The question was, are we excluded from your meet up, and does your bonding with Others include us, or do you just not want to know us.
I'm trying to assess how much you've othered us.
Also re: being transient, I don't have British citizenship but my kids are British and they don't speak my language, so could not relocate where I'm from. Does that tell you I'm passing by, and is there nothing I can add to the debate one way or the other*? (Not that I want to meet up!)

Given some leavers believe the brexit benefits will be felt in 50 years why are these people allowed to shape the future of those who aren’t even born yet? Especially when a lot of leave voters wont even be around in 50 years.

Quietrebel · 27/09/2018 18:24

I have to say any mention of cake on a brexit thread makes me chuckle 😁

Quietrebel · 27/09/2018 18:32

why haven’t they applied for UK citizenship?

-costs (££££)

  • horrendous paperwork
  • long process
  • sometimes it's not even possible due to citizenship rules from country of origin
  • EU membership did not make it necessary to go through all the above.

It is not like just applying for a passport

Moussemoose · 27/09/2018 19:32

If you pay taxes to the U.K. government and live in the country then you should have the right to vote.

More or less.

Bearbehind · 27/09/2018 19:34

mousse that's a great distinction but it couldn't be applied in practice - that's the problem here.

If you pay taxes to the U.K. government and live in the country then you should have the right to vote.

Why? France and Germany dont allow this and I would very much think the same rule would apply in a referendum situation.

10degreestostarboard · 27/09/2018 20:16

As well as getting our country back from foreign rule, hard brexit will free mumsnet from the constant Brexit threads perpetuated as nauseum by our resident band of remain cultists

jasjas1973 · 27/09/2018 20:35

So, we quote what EU countries do when it suits? Lol!

If you pay taxes and live here, then why can't you vote? esp if you've lived here for 5 years or so, is it really fair that the EU surgeon who saves UK lives can't help decide the future of the NHS etc? yet someone who has never worked, never contributed, can?

How does it go? no taxation with out representation.

10degreestostarboard · 27/09/2018 20:38

Oh jasjas

You really really don’t get it do you

For the moment the uk is still a sovereign nation state. That means we look after our nationals first and ahead of your eu elites. Because when all is said and done eu nationals are still foreign third parties

time4chocolate · 27/09/2018 20:44

That’s the rules jas - lots of things in life aren’t fair.

Bearbehind · 27/09/2018 20:51

See, then people like 10degrees have to become idiotic in their comments.

Life isn't black and white.

Sadly you clearly see more than one meaning to that comment.

Which is the crux of this issue.

OP posts:
Moussemoose · 27/09/2018 20:59

If you are a 'foreign third party' why should you pay tax?

If you pay tax surely it's only fair you get a say in how it is spent.

10degreestostarboard · 27/09/2018 20:59

Bearbehind

Idiotic?

Someone once said insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result

A bit like these endless threads by cultists who arrogantly refuse to accept defeat

Bearbehind · 27/09/2018 21:02

The only cultists around here are the twats who think they can get what they want just because they want it and have been told by bigger tears that they can have it.

OP posts:
10degreestostarboard · 27/09/2018 21:02

Moose

Foreign third parties like nhs doctors are here voluntarily in high paid jobs.

So no, they can pay taxes to support us (and themselves)!while they live here but they don’t get a say. If they don’t like that arrangement...

Bearbehind · 27/09/2018 21:02

Twats not tears!

Now who looks idiotic?

:)

Remain is an esoteric cult. Most in the uk couldn’t give a monkeys at this stage

jasjas1973 · 27/09/2018 21:05

@10degreestostarboard

jeez talk about condescending! and you call others elites!

Bottom line is you don't want EU nationals who work and support our nation voting because they wouldn't support your narrow xenophobic agenda.

10degreestostarboard · 27/09/2018 21:07

I don’t want eu nationals voting because they are not British citizens. They are foreign nationals.

I think you will find that view quite mainstream and inoffensive outside of the cult...
