I'm guessing surfer won't start another thread as the questions were getting a bit difficult on the last one. 😂

Thought this was worthy of discussion though

So it turns out those pesky EU immigrants actually contribute more than the average UK citizen.

Who knew 🤔

Surfer - not a bad idea Smile but agree Bellini is right there are some butters out there.

time4chocolate · 23/09/2018 09:05

Blimey auto correct nutters not butters!

Peregrina · 23/09/2018 09:07

Le clerk... There is a big misunderstanding on here about what people at the bottom of the pile want and need.

I remember just after the result a group of leavers were asked about a theatre or some eu regenerated building near them.
They snorted with derision. Yes it's nice but we can't afford to step foot in it.

So they blamed the EU and not whichever Local, Regional or National authority applied for and decided that this was how they would spend the money. If it was a Local Authority, there is a good chance that the people grumbling didn't even bother to turn out to vote for their local councillors. Time and time again, it's a UK decision which turns out to be at the root of the problem, not the EU.

Since you want young people to be given a meaningful vote, I trust that you will want them to have the chance to vote on what deal May gets from her negotiations? After all, they are the ones who are going to live longest with the results.

niced idea Smile surfer virtual Brew for now. Cheers

@mrmarksteel
Now the promoters should get onto setting up the fight all the world wants to see - Joshua versus Michael Gove.

Moussemoose · 23/09/2018 09:58

Autumnwindy yet again words and sound with no substance

"a meaningful vote" please clarify under FPTP or another referendum?

"Political freedom" being ordered around by the WTO? Abandoning an organisation that is democratic for that?

"I blame the eu" why and for what?

Just bluster and nonsense.

PCPlumsTruncheon · 23/09/2018 10:30

surfer I would deffo be up for a meet up. I have been to a few meet ups and the venue is arranged via Facebook or PMs to avoid the possibility of any weirdos turning up.
I don’t mind organising it if people let me know who would be interested.

surferjet · 23/09/2018 10:56

PCPlumsTruncheon

Ok, let’s see how much interest we get & start a plan 😊

frumpety · 24/09/2018 19:54

Ah you see, I saw the meet up was in London and 'ooh that will be a dear do !' was my first thought and not 'hmm creepy wierdos might want to join us ' Need to up my street smarts Smile

surferjet · 25/09/2018 07:39

Hi frumpety. Lol, dh has put his foot down and said no to me meeting up with strangers on the internet & I agree with him. I know there’s been loads of happy MN meet ups for all sorts of reasons ( Xmas etc ) but he thinks brexit is not a great reason to meet. So it’s virtual drinks for me Grin. Are you looking forward to March next year btw?

Peregrina · 25/09/2018 09:15

Looking forward to Marching in October first.

KennDodd · 25/09/2018 09:43

@surferjet

Is there anything that would convince you that Remain was the better option and that Leave will be bad for the country?

surferjet · 25/09/2018 10:11

KennDodd

I do respect remainers opinions & I do see all the brexit arms regulars as friends, life would be boring if we all thought the same wouldn’t it!

And I can tell you that the night we actually leave I won’t be starting celebration threads because that’s crass & I wouldn’t do that to people who I have ( sort of ) bonded with over the years. I know some of you have genuine concerns & worries, & I agree with a lot of what you say. You could be right? who knows, but I’m willing to take the risk.

KennDodd · 25/09/2018 23:12

@surferjet

Is your job/finances secure through Brexit?

Talkstotrees · 26/09/2018 12:52

Here’s a little ditty for you:

Fawful · 27/09/2018 09:02

...And would foreigners be welcome at your meet up, @surferjet ?

KennDodd · 27/09/2018 09:14

@surferjet

Could we have our meet up about midday on the 20th October in front of the Hilton on Park Lane? We could go for a walk through London, seeing all the sights, there'll be loads of us there and it'd be so great if you could join us?

YeOldeTrout · 27/09/2018 09:17

I love Tusk's Instagram pic. Honesty and humour lightens a situation that is grim. Well-called for.

surferjet · 27/09/2018 10:29

KennDodd

Haha. I’ll think about it. Smile

Fawful · 27/09/2018 11:05

We can now watch as @surferjet refuses to even engage with non-British posters.

I'm surprise you are considering meeting her given that she told Pointythings on the Macron thread that 'pointythings if you’re not a UK National than what you think is totally irrelevant.' Her 'bonding' doesn't extend to foreigners.

surferjet · 27/09/2018 13:54

Fawful
EU citizens living here are our guests, they have no right to tell us what to do, or to tell us that we’re idiots for voting the way we did.
Only people eligible to vote have an opinion on Brexit that’s worth listening to imo.
It’s like the whole Donald Trump thing, what’s it got to do with us?
The American people voted him in so let them get on with it!
I don’t live in America, I’m not a US citizen so I have no right to tell them anything!

lonelyplanetmum · 27/09/2018 14:22

I don’t live in America, I’m not a US citizen so I have no right to tell them anything!

So if you went to live in America at what stage do you have the right to tell them something?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 27/09/2018 14:23

EU citizens living here are our guests, they have no right to tell us what to do, or to tell us that we’re idiots for voting the way we did.

They are not guests. They live here legally. They contribute to British society and life, working, paying taxes. They are husbands, wives, mothers, fathers. How dare you reduce them to "guests". Britain will be poorer without the contribution of EU citizens in science, engineering, healthcare et al. I'd suggest they contribute more than the "patriotic" Tommy Robinson supporters outside court today.

It’s like the whole Donald Trump thing, what’s it got to do with us?

He's supposedly leader of the free world. The politics of the US affects every other nation on earth. Taking isolationism to whole new level here aren't you?

I don’t live in America, I’m not a US citizen so I have no right to tell them anything!

Imagine taking this during the second world war or apartheid South Africa.

bellinisurge · 27/09/2018 14:36

Not guests. Especially if they have right of abode in uk or permanent residency.

KennDodd · 27/09/2018 14:54

EU citizens living here are our guests

That's an awful view (not surprised to hear it though) that implies we can kick them out any time we like, that they are less than Brits.

Quietrebel · 27/09/2018 14:56

Guests can be made to feel like they've outstayed their welcome. Guests have no rights.
Before anyone piles on surfer however, I can see she has a point... up to a point. Guests are exactly how my parents see themselves for instance. They wouldn't dream of making a comment on the choices of the British people.
The realisation that I cannot see myself as a guest anymore was a big factor in my decision to naturalise for instance. But it's not that simple- if I wasn't able to or had to give up my citizenship of birth then what would I do? It wouldn't change the fact that I've contributed to the economy and the life of the community in many ways...
The lack of a right to vote should not totally invalidate one's contribution to society and one's opinion.
