'People's Vote' - is it pie in the sky? Is there simply not enough time left?

I think there is increasing momentum behind the idea of a 'People's Vote', as a second referendum on the 'Final Deal'.
But reading this Jack of Kent blogpost from December last year, he thought we were running out of time then, let alone ten months later.
jackofkent.com/2017/12/there-will-soon-not-be-enough-time-for-a-further-referendum-before-29-march-2019/

Essentially, we can't vote on the Final Deal until we know what it is, we need new (and better) legislation, we need time for a campaign and we need a procedure to revoke A50. And that's even if the idea of a second referendum was supported by the government or the opposition.
So (as much as I would LOVE Brexit to be reversed as it's the Worst Idea Ever) I think this People's Vote campaign is a distraction and false hope.

Can anyone with more knowledge tell me different? Please? Pretty Please?

It would require a good few Tories to put their money where their mouths are. We know we can expect 4 Labour rebels to vote with the Tories come hell or high water and the DUP would vote with them.

I suppose then we could ask for a stay of A50 whilst we tried to sort ourselves out.

Possible but highly unlikely given the current numbers. You're asking the Tories and the DUP to risk falling from power which imo is implausible. That's if Labour are even a threat in a GE, which they're not looking like, given they are now the champagne socialist Remain party.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 26/09/2018 09:19

That's it Blackcurrant - it's theoretically possible but it's not going to happen because none of the people in power (or reasonably close to power) are going to make it happen.

This talk of a People's Vote is merely shifting deckchairs to assuage politicians' consciences and give the electorate false hope.
It's diverting efforts and we're circling the drain of No Deal.

Ironically if the EU did agree to chequers or a version of, and Labour votes against it, they will actually force a WTO or 'no deal' situation.

The problem right now is that Labour's red lines make it impossible to endorse a Tory Brexit, and vice versa. Anything that is acceptable to one is automatically unacceptable to the other (because of the way the red lines have been drawn).

In fact if you drew a Venn diagram of Brexit terms acceptable to the EU, Brexit terms acceptable to the Tories and Brexit terms acceptable to Labour - you would have three circles with no overlap at all.

Which makes no deal not necessarily the most likely outcome, but an increasingly probable one.

I am growing increasingly excited by the prospect of a people's vote, but with the caveat it contains a remain option. If so we can rescue this sorry mess. Yes it would not be clean and leavers would yell foul, but at least we'd have a plan.

bellinisurge · 26/09/2018 14:09

I doubt there'll be a second referendum and if there is it will not include a Remain option.
We have done this to ourselves.

This. I've subscribed to the People's Vote campaign and bunged them a few quid, but my heart tells me it's pointless. I hope I am proved wrong.

Agree that with Labour's positioning this week they are unlikely to endorse any "Tory Brexit". Therefore it's not difficult to see how the vote on the deal could fail to pass the Commons. There would then be a no confidence vote which the Tories might win ; however the ramifications would be far reaching. By far the largest likelihood is for the UK just to leave with no deal in March. The EU are NOT going to budge and will just ratchet up the pressure not caring at the damage to our country and it's politics - in fact this is what we are seeing right now. I see a no deal Brexit is being by far the most likely option now and the country must prepare accordingly.

What 5year said - we're completely fuckedBiscuitAngry

Blinkingblimey · 26/09/2018 22:26

There ARE people who CAN change this - Boris & Gove for starters can come out and state how they got it wrong.... neither ever believed in a leave vote, they were posturing for notoriety.... THEY can make a start. Jezzer could also help....surely he doesn’t want to emulate the financial legacy of 70s labour?!..... same flipping ideals which will have the same ramifications....why does nobody remember or have knowledge of the history GGGGRRRRRRRRRRRR

jasjas1973 · 26/09/2018 22:53

EU....not caring at the damage to our country and it's politics

Why should they? we are leaving them, not the other way round! our politics is our business, again nt theirs.

Their duty is to the 27 remaining states and to make the best out of the UK leaving ie bring on-shore as much business and finance as they can.

You voted for this shite, didn't you consider the consequences?

Peregrina · 27/09/2018 10:50

EU....not caring at the damage to our country and it's politics

Because we spent 43 years whining for special deals, and finally they have had enough and are calling our bluff. May still doesn't get it, she still thinks she can cherry pick deals. The other leavers are happy to humour her for now, so that they can renege on the deals as soon as she is gone.

iwillrunanultra · 27/09/2018 11:36

Agree totally Jasjas, can't believe people still think that the EU should be chasing us because we've flounced.

I will be marching on Oct 20th and have also put a bit of money in the pot to help with organisation, I just need to do something ....

1tisILeClerc · 27/09/2018 11:48

Many in Europe, like the port authorities have already spent the money for preparation for no deal, or are at least pretty close to completion. They will be pissed off at having been forced to do this so may prefer the UK to leave. It provides employment and if tariffs will be charged may be able to claw back some of the cost from the UK. Raab and others saying the UK won't pay the final bills is beyond stupid. If the UK wants to eat, they are over a barrel of their own making.
