Boris Johnson is clearing the decks for a leadership challenge.

I guess that means that the Brexit we get all depends on what George, Michael and Boris decide over lunch and how good Operation Yellowhammer is.

Jacob Rees-Mogg's Economists for Free Trade event had only one economist, and that was the least ridiculous thing about it
There is no one in the the Treasury, the Bank of England or on the economics desk at any major bank or investment firm who would consider Jacob Rees-Mogg's analysis to be anything other than deranged

BigChocFrenzy · 12/09/2018 08:08

oop, pressed before Indie link there:

mother The no deal cliff edge Brexit we are heading for will lead to massive cuts in the welfare state
either by whichever govt is in charge
or forced on them by the IMF when it is called in

Economists for Free Trade event was just trolling, which the BBC has been cheerleading (see their reporting on Minford for last 2 years)

Meanwhile, on planet reality, businesses have had their hand chopped off and are bleeding badly and the government has a big knife ready to chop off both legs.
Getting an extension to A50 will just increase the blood loss.

bellinisurge · 12/09/2018 08:48

@RedToothBrush I heard that interview. He did. But he was basically positioning himself to take over from her or be on her team.

topcat1980 · 12/09/2018 09:10

The economists for free trade report is so full of holes.

The funny thing about it is that not one of the newspapers has ripped it to shreds today, if it had been a Labour manifesto it would have been torn up already.

Peregrina · 12/09/2018 09:16

Giving the people the option to call the whole thing off then looks not only feasible, but unavoidable.

But whichever government got it would have to seriously look at which factors led to the Leave vote. As far as the north and south west go, I would suggest that in large measure it was a vote against austerity and feeling neglected by Westminster.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 12/09/2018 09:17

So much for improving animal welfare post Brexit. Looks like live animal exports will continue. How many times are people happy to be lied to?

topcat1980 · 12/09/2018 09:19

People are happy to be lied to as long as they are told they are right.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/09/2018 09:25

topcat The Indie article I linked to upthread really savaged the report:

<a class="break-all" href="http://go.mumsnet.com/?xs=1&id=470X1554755&url=www.independent.co.uk/voices/brexit-jacob-reesmogg-steve-baker-economists-for-free-trade-a8533021.html" target="_blank">https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/brexit-jacob-reesmogg-steve-baker-economists-for-free-trade-a8533021.html

Hazardswan · 12/09/2018 09:26

mother I'd go for a party that has a manifesto for remain or people's vote over an indivdual MP.

Carl Sagan:

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this:

If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle.

We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth.
The bamboozle has captured us.

It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken.

Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”

bellinisurge · 12/09/2018 09:30

Carl Sagan was a person who really knew where his towel was - obscure Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference.

topcat1980 · 12/09/2018 09:34

That doesn't go into the economics of it.

I want to see a proper think tank shredding of it.

I could give it to year 13 and then report back to you?

borntobequiet · 12/09/2018 09:40

Please give it to Y13. My A level ICT and Computing classes shredded the NHS National Programme for a few years before the government finally abandoned it.
It was my go to example of Why Projects Fail for a long time.

DGRossetti · 12/09/2018 09:41

Carl Sagan was a person who really knew where his towel was

If just for the Pale Blue Dot picture.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence

WTF were the Leave campaign never subjected to that simple test ?

On a related note des nos jours, Prof. Brian Cox is squarely behind a Peoples Vote (but then most scientists are Remainers to start with)

BigChocFrenzy · 12/09/2018 09:41

That kind of detailled analysis requires at least a few days work to do properly
Maybe in the serious Sundays ?
< ponders if any are left >

RE: the guardian article Almost all cuts to social care in England are in the poorest areas we're one of those areas that received the cuts the most. We see (privately) a specialist in London, very jolly man who is used to patients from the south east and rich areas, he hadnt a clue how bad things are "up north" and expected DP's care to improve with his involvement....it hasn't.

Moral of the story, if your north of London consider private insurance. Or use up your savings/borrow money on private care like we are. Or if you have a problem the GP isn't taking seriously go to a&e like they tell you not to do.

Mr Junker's 'state of the EU speech is (sumarised) on SKY news website.
Reinforcing no 'deals ' on SM, so whatever 'plans' the UK come up with it they have to be decisive. As far as I see it, fully remain of we are definitely out.
German MEP (?) criticising Italy primarily for not admitting migrants, although it is a general comment that the EU has not got an integrated plan together. The EU really should have got the migration issue looked at many years ago, it would have saved a lot of heartache and lives.
Interesting comments about being partners in Africa rather than aid donations.
