Brexit

Have your frienships and family relationships suffered as a result of Brexit?

Just that, really. If friends and/ or family members have clearly voted differently to you, has it changed the way you see them or interact with them? Have friendships broken down?

I haven't been able to vote, but the outcome of the vote affects me disproportionately. Family members have voted Leave. There have been arguments, also between friends, some ended in loss of contact.

I wonder how the Brexit vote has affected others on here?

@Gaspode
The EU does not usually 'medle' with the internal running of a country so things like miimum wage is entirely up to the UK Gov.
Human rights is not EU either, it is a separate organisation.
Tax havens, yes Mt Junker has been found wanting but (I am presuming) has reformed and it should be noted that new laws against tax havens are in force a month or so after 'Brexit day' which is probably spurring the likes of JRM and the ERG on, so they don't fall foul of the new laws.
The UK workers are not necessarily lazy however some countries 'work ethic' may be a bit higher and the organisation and investment with relation to UK workers is not up there with 'best practices'.
(read, lazy/shit management).
The Germans are 36 percent more 'productive' than British. It would be interesting to know if the workers for German owned companies (BMW making Minis in the UK for example) are actually the same as German counterparts.
I don't think any of my friends or family voted Leave.

Sar51 · 28/08/2018 09:08

So what is the real reason for this thread? Rather than focusing on the problem I.e Brexit it appears that many posters are just using it as an excuse to sling insults at other people. I give up.

sonicdoom · 28/08/2018 09:10

I am a remainer but I really dislike the inference about many people who voted brexit. They are no more or less thick that anyone else.

My partners brother reads anything The Sun says and takes it as truth. He voted Leave. When DP was questioning why his reply was 'well, because there's too many Africans in this country Hmm'.

When DP further questioned what his bro was on about, it turned out that he didn't mean Africans at all but Syrians!

DP explained that they are fleeing war from a country we invaded and his brother just said 'well I don't think it's right'. DP pointed out that the small town they grew up in where his brother still resides a) has maybe one black family living there and b) leaving the EU won't affect the number of African people or Syrian people coming over here.

What makes it worse is that my mother is black!! I can't face palm hard enough 🤦🏻‍♀️

I don't think less of DPs brother though because I've always known he's a bit dim so I can't really lower the bar with him.

Perhaps people were better off not going to university and brainwashed

Perhaps a little education might help you write more coherently?

I’m not sure what you were trying to say in your little rant. Something about your belief that Muslims come first, is it? (Not sure of the connection with Brexit, but hey)

As for the eu not setting the uks minimum wage? - er - why would they?

Posters who think wc people will have a better quality of life after Farage, Reed-mogg, Johnson’s Brexit actually blow my mind. Where do they get their ideas from? These leaders have never even pretended that the poor will be better off!

As Buteo had pointed out, in a round about way, the leave 'arguments' are too narrowly focussed. Yes we would all love to buy food really cheaply. Unfortunately it has to be produced and there are significant costs. Why should 'you' be able to buy food cheaply when the people producing it (in some circumstances) are already in debt because Supermarkets have forced their wages down?
Milk is a classic case. Supermarkets (certainly in the past) have paid the minimum to producers but because supermarkets sell other products they can afford to sell to customers at BELOW the price they pay. When milk production regulations change (increasing production costs) it is the producers who foot the bill not the supermarkets.
Suicide among small scale farmers is proportionately very high.

Helmetbymidnight · 28/08/2018 09:15

We must now pretend that is a perfectly valid answer and this person is very intelligent. Hmm

sonicdoom · 28/08/2018 09:23

Helmetbymidnight the guys a dumbass, it's exactly the sort of thing I'd expect him to come out with. You can't reason with stupid. Though DP did try.

sonicdoom · 28/08/2018 09:30

gaspode I'm not sure what is meant by this, can you clarify? B) the Brexit issue shows how much so many people are so indoctrinated by the left wing political ideal they cannot think for themselves - ‘nativist - a nasty new term - the country is supposed to be run for it’s people not immigrants - islamophobia - a repressive anti women cult - but leftists and ‘feminists’ support it - so teenage girls in let’s say Rotherham should not be afraid Of it?

What has Islam got to do with the EU? And why is 'islamophobia' a 'repressive and anti-women cult'? People who fear Islam are repressive and anti-women? And what do you mean, 'feminists' support it? What do teenage girls in Rotheram have to do with the EU?

Genuinely confused Confused

Hazardswan · 28/08/2018 09:55

sar51 try the Westminster thread. Lots analysis, articles, petitions, the nice peeps over there have talked me out my tree a few times and kept me productive!

Whatthefoxgoingon · 28/08/2018 10:35

sonicdoom gaspode is a racist twunt don’t worry yourself about understanding any of it

sonicdoom · 28/08/2018 10:38

It made my head hurt reading what Gaspode wrote.

firehousedog1 · 28/08/2018 10:43

FFS anyone looking differently at someone who they previously considerd a friend just because they voted differently to you in a referendum needs to have a serious word with themselves.

Lovetosinglalala123 · 28/08/2018 11:02

Firehousedog1 I don't look differently on her because she voted leave (although she hasn't actually said she voted that way). It's all the racist, Islamophobic comments since then.

continuallychargingmyphone · 28/08/2018 11:16

sonic I did vote leave and retrospectively I would probably vote remain, however please do not think that the person you describe speaks for all of us who did so.

I hate racism, I find it very distressing to hear about and I know there have been some dreadful things happen as a result of awful prejudices.

IamPickleRick · 28/08/2018 11:19

firehousedog1 but what if the leave result has validated their racist leanings and now they feel free to air their vile rants because they believe that the majority of U.K. agrees with them and it was only societal pressure that kept them quiet before. That’s been my experience.

I find it strange when people say they don’t know anyone who voted the other way to them. I have a mix and the only ones who have shown themselves to be Muslim and black people haters are the leave camp. I am also in that North London Borough with the highest Remain vote mentioned upthread and all my friends were remain so I can see how you might think everyone you know voted the same as you. It’s easy to live in a bubble when social media is involved and you only see a newsfeed of like minded posts.

MaisyPops · 28/08/2018 11:22

Lovetosinglalala123
I think that's what some posters are missing.
For many of us we haven't changed our view of people because they voted differently. I know quite a few people who voted leave and whilst I disagree witj their reasons, that's their opinion.

The people where my view has changed is because somewhere in the process I've seen sides of them that I didn't think they had.

I removed some acquaintances from social media beause I dont see them much and they started sharing stupid images like 'this is a soldier. He went to a toy shop to buy his daughter a teddy but the Muslim wouldn't serve him. Share if you think its a disgrace' and 'this is a prison vs this is a care home. Share if you think our elderly people should be treated better than prisoners'. 'Share for the victims of the Rotherham grooming'. I realised I little in common with them if they felt sharing Britain First style material was acceptable.
My issue wants their leave vote. It was the fact they clearly started being sympathetic to Britain First and it's a group I cannot stand.

derxa · 28/08/2018 11:28

Helmetbymidnight · 28/08/2018 11:44

The thread is called 'Have your friendships and family relationships suffered as a result of Brexit?' and its in the Brexit section.

If you don't like being on a thread about friendships and family relationships suffering because of Brexit then maybe avoid it.

If you want to focus on the problem of Brexit itself, you could join one of the threads about it, or start one of your own.

Make sure its in the Brexit section though, people get very annoyed if its not.

sonicdoom · 28/08/2018 11:47

continually I don't think his view is representative of Leave voters per se. But I haven't found a single valid argument amongst the Leave voters I do know (and I have had discussions with most of them). It was in response to PP who said Leave voters weren't more or less thick than anyone else. Well what DPs brother said sounded pretty thick and illogical to me as well as racist.

Another bloke I know voted Leave and he is probably on the far left of the political spectrum - he doesn't think that home ownership should even be legal for instance! He voted because he 'wanted to being democracy back to the UK', he would like us to 'make our own laws and not be at the mercy of unelected EU beauracrats' - his exact words. I pointed out that Brexit is testimony that we do live in a democratic society hence we are brexiting as Leave had a slight majority. I also said that MEPs are elected to represent the UK in Brussels. All fell on deaf ears of course.

The reasons for the Leave vote are varied and many. But it doesn't mean they are sound arguments and when the argument doesn't stand up to scrutiny, the person who voted Leave usually doesn't change their stance with the presence of facts. I wouldn't exactly call that intelligence.

Mistigri · 28/08/2018 12:51

I find it strange when people say they don’t know anyone who voted the other way to them.

I said that; what I meant was that I am not close to anyone who voted leave (and admits it).

Obviously I know of people who voted leave, for eg at work, but they are not people I work with directly or am likely to talk politics with.

My close social circle consists of academics, highly-educated colleagues working in trade-oriented roles, and British migrants. It's hardly surprising that none of these people voted leave (or aren't admitting it, if they did).

I'm a left of centre voter and I'd say most of my close personal friends are too, but I work with a lot of people who have voted conservative in the past and they are all remainers.

Sar51 · 28/08/2018 19:01

Thanks Hazard I will take a look

Moussemoose · 28/08/2018 19:11

Yup and making up stories about impossibly awful people

derxa I'm sure some people do make up stories on the internet, but you are implying that all the posters on this thread are sharing upsetting stories about racist family members to make a political point.

Not one posters has told the truth?

I think that reflects on your defensiveness. You could start a thread about racist remain voters and see how many people come on to post.

Moussemoose · 28/08/2018 19:12

Confused @Derxa

What we're saying doesn't fit your narrative so we must be making it up? Right.

IamPickleRick · 28/08/2018 19:28

I find it laughable that Derxa thinks it’s all made up... you can look up the BNP members list on Wikileaks and find people I know, went to school with and live alongside.
