* TMs visit to Africa..And doing this in competition with China who are already funding massive infrastructure projects.*

A friend I'm with at the moment does charity work in Africa and says evidence of links the Chinese have and their investment are everywhere.

I find the countries TM has prioritised fascinating. Outside Europe it's:
▪ One visit to Bahrain, India, Iraq, Japan, and Turkey
▪ Two visits to Canada, China, Jordan,Saudi Arabia,
▪ Three visits to the United States

And now Africa. I wonder who else will raise the same issues about hostility that India has done.

Lord Bilimoria of Cobra beers wrote, “The government’s hostile stance on immigration makes it unwilling to make positive steps towards seizing the chance to forge closer ties with India.

“Indian business and tourist visitors pay visa fees four times higher for a two-year multiple-entry visa than the Chinese. Any hopes of closer UK-India ties, including a free trade agreement (FTA), rest on a huge shift in our government’s immigration policy.

“FTAs are not just about tariffs and duties, they are about movement of people too: entrepreneurs, skilled workers, and students. We must remove international students from net migration calculations and reinstate the two-year post-study work visa for international graduates of UK universities. But this looks unlikely."

If we had got over the 'shooting people' era of colonialisation and traded on a fairer basis with the places 'we' stamped on things might have been a tad easier.
It is one thing to be 'businesslike' with heads of state, but infinitely better to establish a decent rapport with the 'every day people'. You never know when their friendship may become more important to you.
Where is Mr Fox and his wonder deals?

DGRossetti · 28/08/2018 11:22

£4billion to Africa.

Would it be churlish and/or childish to praise how Brexit is turning out any hardcore Brexiteers you know ?

Havanananana · 28/08/2018 11:22

The UK is not looking to shoot people anymore. The new tactic is to lend them shed-loads of money on condition that they buy British goods and sell produce to British traders at low costs.

Look at who has accompanied May to Africa. Bankers, money lenders, vulture capitalists, insurance sharks - all looking to load Africa with debts that can only be repaid through ever more onerous terms. 'Wonga' for developing countries, at 1000% APR.

1tisILeClerc · 28/08/2018 11:43

@Havanna
Just as well really, there are likely to be a lot of old 'scores' to settle globally if it did.
So, May and Co rushing around being the big 'We are' promising loads of cash to bribe friendship from others while demonstrating how little respect they have for the people of the UK.
We (really) are a 'middle of the road European nation who if we got our act together and was realistic about things be comfortable with a decent standard of living for all.
It feels bad 'talking down' the UK as it was my 'home' for many years but it needs a dose of reality, the 'greatness' of 120 or more years ago has dissipated and we are now 'just OK but has potential' but severely crippled by delusion.
Clicking through from the Politico link earlier and reading about Estonia and the Balkans you start to get a feel of how insignificant the UK is.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/08/2018 12:45

Sorry, Jason The UK govt has so far not published anything other than their recent very generol - useless - notices.
In contrast, the govts of the RoI, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden have put out very detailled info & advice online for their businesses

and of course the EU's Notices to Stakeholders (E27 businesses & orgs) - check those, or this might be helpful to your firm too:

www.standard.co.uk/news/londoners-diary/the-londoner-bank-chief-carney-asked-to-stay-a-year-a3921451.html
The Londoner: Bank chief Carney asked to stay a year

Mark Carney asked to extend his time as Bank of England governor

Robert Peston @Peston
If @theresamay really wants war with @JacobRees_Mogg she will agree to let @bankofengland governor Carney stay till 2020. Big test of whether her vision of Brexit stability trumps Tory party unity

YES PLEASE. KEEP CARNEY!!!

Whether he will want to is surely another matter?

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 28/08/2018 12:57

The Londoner understands the Treasury is keen for him to stay on until 2020 so that he can provide continuity during the turbulence of Brexit. It is also understood that they are struggling to find a candidate strong enough to replace him. An extension to Carney’s term would be welcomed across the City and Whitehall, but could raise eyebrows from arch-Brexiteers such as the backbencher Jacob Rees-Mogg, who thinks the governor has been too candid about the damanging economic consequences of leaving the EU.

So reading between the lines, Hammond is quietly talking to the BoE about the idea - possibly behind May's back.

And no one wants to be the next governor, because - well why the hell would you want to be given the treatment of Carney and looking after the BoE in a Brexit Armageddon is a damn good way to end your career.

Jack Maidment @jrmaidment
Uh oh. Downing Street repeatedly refuses to guarantee that it will publish no deal economic modelling before MPs are asked to vote on Theresa May's Brexit deal.

Will Parliament be given analysis of different Brexit scenarios before voting on PM's deal?
Spox: “Once the deal is negotiated MPs will be presented with that analysis ahead of that final vote.”
Just on the deal?
Spox: “On the deal, yes.”

Will it include no deal analysis?
Spox: “The analysis will be set out at the appropriate time by the Treasury. I am not going to get into what the analysis will contain.”

PM's spokesman was asked repeatedly to say whether no deal forecasts will be given to MPs before they vote on the Brexit deal and every time he refused to say.

Given Theresa Mays pronouncements from Africa, it's possible she is now going out of her way to piss off the Brexiteers ?

Not forgetting that it has always been open to the UK and UK business to invest in the African continent countries whilst a member of the EU.

One statistic I heard this morning (Vic Darbyshire programme today) was that the UK exports to Spain are greater than the UK exports to countries in Africa.

frankiestein401 · 28/08/2018 13:55

'Africa' - The brexiteer reference to future growth being outside the EU glosses over:
a) 100% growth against bugger all is still bugger all, it's not magically more than eg 2% growth of 1/3 global gdp
b) The EU wont stand still - if an emerging market, without current EU trade agreements, grows to the point it becomes significant then it will become a focus for EU negotiators - crowding out liam's amateur deal makers.

Hazardswan · 28/08/2018 13:58

More on the british/Irish border www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/aug/28/irish-border-question-must-be-solved-by-uk-not-eu-says-sweden

Every other country seems to know more than we do, Swedes had a meeting to assure Swedes can stay post brexit no one could clarify what actual rights they'll have. The border is our problem to sort and we're being an ass about it by the looks of things.

1tisILeClerc · 28/08/2018 14:20

I would put at least some money on the bright eyed children in Africa, who are 'entertaining' Mrs May having a better idea of what is going on.

1tisILeClerc · 28/08/2018 14:31

Ref DGR/Africa
BUT, after the initial minor upheaval Africa WILL be a great place to trade with, just give it say 30 years, when the Chinese have finished investing and the infrastructure is ready.

Why do I feel like I am watching the family pet dying, the point where you realise all it's smaller ailments have finally got too much for it?

Why do I feel like I am watching the family pet dying, the point where you realise all it's smaller ailments have finally got too much for it?

Oh its much worse than that.

Rover is already dead. Killed your sadist dog hating, much loved eccentric uncle.

But your parents didn't want to tell you.

Instead they've replaced Rover with a lookalike and intend to run it over next week, to soften the blow and save you the trauma of it and destroying family harmony and the special bond you have with Uncle Eric.

They blame the odd looking cat lady down the road for doing the deed and to encourage you to firebomb her house in retribution.

France planning for no-deal Brexit

Good news for Misti but iirc she has already prepped to avoid problems.

https://euobserver.com/tickers/142667

French prime minister Edouard Philippe instructed his ministers on Monday to prepare measures in case of a no-deal Brexit,
including measures to facilitate the stay of British citizens in France
and ensuring smooth border controls.

The government will ask parliament in the coming weeks to allow it to adopt the contingency plans by decree, a statement said.
The UK is due to leave the European Union in March 2019.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/08/2018 16:22

So the EU members are starting to write emergency legislation for no-deal Brexit Hmm

It would be reassuring to think this is all a big game of international chicken
but the UK side have been running around like headless chickens for the last 2 years
and the world may just be accepting that those chickens don't have any brains attached

Mistigri · 28/08/2018 16:32

Thanks for the link Choc.

Have got the kids' French passports but otherwise haven't done anything! The advice being given is to get the permanent EU residents' card, but since this will not be valid after a hard Brexit then I must admit that I have not felt particularly motivated. We have a back-up solution, as we have two French children, so we would qualify for a residence card on that basis.
