iirc, woman no electricity or gas from Russia (but some E27 countries import from them)

The UK imports very roughly about 5% of its petrol & diesel from Russia
and 3% of coal & other solid fuel

These could be replaced fairly easily if need be. However, Russia is so short of income that Putin is unlikely to further reduce Russian income anyway.

Looks like Cable will radically change Ldem leadership voting & membership rules, then step down fairly soon after Brexit
(assuming this happens 29 March)

He may attempt to copy Trudeau's success in broadening membership - but then the Canadian Liberals do have Trudeau

Thank you bigchoc Mogg's statement was just bannonite. Most people can see where he and they are going with that little beauty.

Peregrina · 26/08/2018 19:56

No deal is the policy with the momentum - because it is the only one that doesn't immediately tear apart the Tory party

The British public could go and wreck the Tory party. Just think of the last election - wall to wall Tory propaganda until the period of election Purdah, Cambridge Analytica's interference, so the 100 seat majority should have been a certainty, and what happened? May lost her majority. [Wishful thinking on my behalf, maybe, but the Public can't be taken for granted.]

woman Nazanin is back in prison Sad - the 3 day furlough was not extended.
Let's hope she is soon out again, because it may just be some permit went astray. However, the Iranians may want something from the UK

woman11017 · 26/08/2018 20:06

Saw that BigChoc Sad I didn't think she would be allowed to stay out, but hoped......Do Iranians want the money they're owed?

@JewishChron
Jewish MPs will be offered bodyguards at Labour conference
www.thejc.com/news/uk-news/jewish-mps-will-be-offered-bodyguards-at-labour-conference-1.468890
Fascists are definitely 'in' in labour and tories. I am definitely wanting to get out.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/08/2018 20:10

peregrina The British public is very divided - and reportedly "bored" with Brexit
imo, "bored" about an issue can sometimes mean worried about it and not wanting to be reminded (like health or weight)
especially those who don't want to think they made a terrible mistake with their ref vote

A post-Brexit (no deal) GE would be very interesting indeed, depending on whether it was late enough for the unemployment figures to spike
and of course if the early chaos actually affected the public in ways they could see, or whether the emergency plans & WTO waivers sufficed

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 26/08/2018 20:13

woman We've both been on the feminist threads about the Green Party and their disgraceful incompetence / tolerance of a paedophile rapist - they seem to be dominated by TRAs now.

The Ldems have also bought into denying biology, but the TRAs don't seem very strong there.
SNP similarly

The Women's Equality Party surrendered disgracefully to men, the most baffling betrayal.

Any other possibilities ?

woman11017 · 26/08/2018 20:21

Do those of you living in the EU see this level of formalised anti women violence and silencing/ pro pornography/ anti safeguarding/ anti women's rights stuff going on in any mainstream parties?
I am puzzled.

woman11017 · 26/08/2018 20:21

'Living in the EU' hark at me! Those of you not living on this island in the EU, that should have read. Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 26/08/2018 20:27

Even if someone is an essential star employee in their firm, their division can be closed, or the whole firm,
if Brexit makes it non-viable

Many years ago, my cousin's DH (they're Americans in the US) was Employee of the Year in a large firm, but
he walked in one day to find his entire division was being closed down to save costs.
His skills weren't transferrable to the remainder of the company, so he lost his job that day, along with family health insurance (my cousin had an expensive chronic illness)
Not great for a middle-aged graduate chemical engineer who had chosen to stay with tech instead of going for higher management.
They survived, but their finances still hadn't recovered fully by his retirement 20 years later.

At least in the UK, people have the NHs and statutory redundancy, up to a max of £15,240 - the latter won't last long enough if there are no comparable jobs around and a mortgage to pay

BigChocFrenzy · 26/08/2018 20:39

The TRA movement seems primarily an Anglosphere thing, woman
i.e. UK, US, Canada, Australia, NZ

Never come across TRA in Germany - I once tried to describe it to a German friend who just looked bewildered.
I'd say they still have the "honour system" we used to have: those transwomen who are respectful and make a good attempt to "pass" are quietly accepted

There are other issues re women's rights in Germany, e.g. very tough abortion limits (3 months iirc), rape laws only tightened after Cologne etc
There are very strict standards of behaviour / respect at work and in organisations, but I don't really know how much influence porn has within relationships - there has always been a more relaxed attitude here, so no sudden floodgates opening as in the Uk aboiut 15 or so years ago.

What helps women here: good parental leave, very cheap childcare: my colleague pays Eur 110 per month for full-time care while they both ft.
However, ft here is a genuine 35-40 hrs, no unpaid overtime. That really helps planning

Hazardswan · 26/08/2018 20:42

Playing catch up.

I thought 'bored' might be code for concern to. Not sure how that would translate in the event of GL or Ref. There needs to be a fall guy for people to blame I think and it can't be the EU. Then for the next 30 yrs we can hear "wouldn't it be great if we were out the eu, shame we couldn't because of X" in dreamy wistful unicorn tones.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/08/2018 20:48

Some good news:
Wonga about to go tits up after having to pay so many compensation over its earlier, even more outrageous loan terms:

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/aug/26/uks-biggest-payday-lender-wonga-on-the-brink-of-collapse

Peregrina · 26/08/2018 20:50

Yes, I think bored because secretly a bit worried sums it up. DH was a reluctant Remainer of the 'what about what the EU did to Greece' school, and now won't talk about it, but he's always been a head in the sand sort of man. He then gets annoyed when it's too late to do anything! Fortunately we are not on any regular medication so don't have that to worry about yet.

Hazardswan · 26/08/2018 20:58

DP has his head in sand to. Particularly re technical notices and his medications (20+ a day). We've talked lightly about it but the consequences are to huge for him to think about it. I've told him to not worry and my love is so big it can stop brexit Grin bloody better be!

woman11017 · 26/08/2018 20:58

Thanks for that post, on feminism and different countries, BigChoc interesting.
I think 'bored' in england can also mean 'don't understand and too embarrassed to ask questions' too, Hazardswan

We were 'played' with the 'What about what the EU did to Greece' thing. (61% Greek vote to accept bailout terms. Mucho grumbling about EU, and desire to leave euro, but not to fall prey to what we have. Alex Andreou@sturdyAlex on twitter is good on it) I realise I was suckered into that at the time, some little trolls were on overtime for that one.

Hazardswan · 26/08/2018 21:01

woman very good point! Embarrassment isn't really a useful emotion either and can make people dig heels in.

As I say, they'd take DH abroad in a worst case but they'll do ok out of Brexit...
