I honestly couldn't think of a better starter to the thread than simply just this tweet

Robert Peston @ peston
We’ve got an official opposition tearing itself apart over antisemitism, the founder of the EDL running rings around the judiciary and a government negotiating a Brexit plan that its own MPs and ministers tell me is dead. When will we pull ourselves together, as a nation?

But don't worry, your blue passport will get you an extra special long wait at passport control. And no deal could lead to continued freedom of movement anyway. Something for everyone in there.

Corrected post!

I read this job ad and thought you might "enjoy" it, DGRossetti grin

It's for an "EU Exit Technology Delivery Lead" for the Home Office - aka a job that no-one sensible would even consider taking

BigChocFrenzy · 14/08/2018 06:37

Interesting that salary is 95-105k, compared to the 70k for the Aviation Delivery Lead I posted some months ago ("knowledge of aviation not necessary" !)

Is the Civil Service learning that it must offer (slightly) more competive salaries to get anyone even vaguely competent for these key roles ?

Job ads

What do these job ads mean? Is the govt is still scrabbling around for a digital solution to some how magically pluck trade out of the ether without trade agreements.

In January there the Government Digital Service wanted a Head of EU Exit to lead on the coordination of the digital function to respond to Brexit.

government.diginomica.com/2018/01/15/government-digital-service-hunt-head-eu-exit/

In March there was an EU exit manager at Defra

justicejobs.tal.net/vx/mobile-0/appcentre-1/brand-2/candidate/so/pm/1/pl/3/opp/16648-16648-EU-Exit-Manager/en-GB

There was another job at DEFRA in June..

The DDTS EU Exit Programme has been initiated to support the wider Defra EU Exit Programme in work streams where an impact on digital, data or technology services is expected,

In fact there seems to have been a leap in civil service digital jobs generally...

Also interesting that the five digital service has a budget of £455m and confused objectives ..

YouGov this morning Confused

Westminstenders: In the Brexit Lane
lonelyplanetmum · 14/08/2018 08:43

Every time the Tories drop in the polls anti semitism becomes the sole focus of social media and press. It's like a ground hog wall they can't move beyond.

Is it really anti semitism that enables the Tories to survive their broken, conflicted cataclysmic coup de deceit.

Why can't LibDems survive the student fees debacle sticking like glue?

Why can't Labour put a greater distance between itself and anti semitism?

Why are the Tories like Teflon where nothing sticks?

What would stop the negative focus on anti semitism?

Would things change if Jeremy were replaced? What about Labour being vocal about something positive as an alternative focus ? Something concrete and achievable that they would do differently?

lonelyplanetmum · 14/08/2018 08:44

Also to be fair the YouGov question is my a member not an official poll question.

DGRossetti · 14/08/2018 08:44

Seems there is a German sense of humour Hmm

I fully agree, lonely The row over Johnson insulting Muslim women isn't going away in the way that he would hope, so let's try and make as much capital as we can about Corbyn and anti-semitism. I don't for one moment think that the Tory party isn't as anti-semitic, although I suspect a majority don't stop to consider the Palestinian situation.

Disgraced former Defence minister and Werrity sniffer is getting no where with USA trade.

You'd think some one who previously set up a whole UK charity (the Atlantic Bridge Education and Research Scheme) to research into the ‘special relationship’ between the UK and USA would be better at trans Atlantic issues by now as it's clearly his passion.

Why does no one care that this statesman who had their American relations Charity shut down and removed from the Charity Commission’s register is now in charge?

Why didn't this stick to him like student fees or anti semitism does to others?

You mean Liam Fox .... disgraced former Defence minister and Werrity sniffer is getting no where with USA trade ?

(That's another chance to post that, and push it up the Google ranks ...)

jasjas1973 · 14/08/2018 09:04

lonelyplanetmum the popular printed media is predominately Tory, Labour is currently giving them the bullets to which they can shoot Labour with. Outright sales may be dropping but the numbers who actual read newspaper are in the 10s of millions, they have a profound effect on peoples views.
I wont vote Libdem, they ve never shook of the Uni fee's debacle because they lost all credibility as a political forceby going into coalition with the Tories, they should disband.

JC needs to step aside, he is ineffectual, has zero leadership qualities and has no political instinct to go for the jugular, i despair ever time i listen to PMQ's May runs rings around him.
Anti-semitism is the symptom not the cause.

Labour could focus on brexit, on social care, the NHS the list is endless, instead we get "Sophie from Skegness wrote to me about her local Poundland closing down......"

lonelyplanetmum · 14/08/2018 09:04

Oh yes I forgot the Liam Fox part.

But why doesn't his past stick but others does?

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 14/08/2018 09:05

Mrsr8. Sad.

I think we spend such a lot of time worrying about the really big stuff and then it’s the relatively small, everyday things that suddenly make us sad. Due to DH having Parkinson’s we’ve not travelled much at all the last few years. I found myself feeling sad we hadn’t made more of an effort. Due to his mobility issues we can only travel if we really throw money at it - now we’ll need to throw even more -if we can travel at all...

Come General Elections when the reporting has to be more balanced, we do see Labour making headway with NHS and Education. I think they are two issues which stopped them being slaughtered at the last election. Otherwise, yes, I agree, it's the right wing press' agenda which dictates public opinion.

Peregrina I admire your optimism.

DGRossetti · 14/08/2018 10:15

Pretty certain this has been posted when it came out

ec.europa.eu/info/sites/info/files/notice_to_stakeholders_brexit_eu_domain_names.pdf

and it's upshot...

(plus a new word .... Wrexit ....)

Thanks Mrsr8 and sorry to hear about you mum. I can see the loss of confidence you mention in DH and travel makes it so much worse. He knows it will be difficult so stresses and worries about it and the stress makes his PD symptoms worse and so everything is even more of a struggle. We then end up thinking is it worth it? Costs a fortune and isn’t the fun it’s supposed to be!

Your trip to France sounds like a great idea - hope you can do it!

Peregrina · 14/08/2018 10:35

But they ought to allow EU domain registrations, because we haven't actually left yet, but need to make it clear that the registration will lapse after 29th March next year.

BTW I swing from being extremely pessimistic to mildly pessimistic. I don't think I am optimistic. If we did manage to stay in the EU, it would be because of some bureaucratic oversight.

I can't say anything about Corbyn or Johnson that bears print.
