Its all going so badly and everyone is worried, but what can be done?

Do we want another referendum and the whole Brexit thing aborted? Do we want another leader doing something different? Do we think Teresa May is doing everything that can be done?

I say "do we think" but to be honest, I don't think anything either way of Teresa May, I don't know what to think.

I don't know what could make things better at this stage

Funny that rosstac never came back eh? 😂

missmoon · 07/08/2018 21:08

I can't see the issue with staying in the CU. It resolves the NI issue

Staying in the CU on its own doesn’t solve the NI issue, because there would still have to be border checks to deal with regulations on e.g. food safety. Only CU plus staying in the single market (or full regulatory convergence) solves the NI issue.

Moussemoose · 07/08/2018 21:30

They ask for list of positive reasons to stay in, they are given them.

Remainers ask for positive reasons to leave that are not rhetorical statements and they disappear or claim they don't have to.

It happens, again and again and again and again thread after thread after thread.

prettybird · 07/08/2018 21:41

.....and then they complain claim that "Remoaners" hound them out by asking "unreasonable" questions Confused

So what is a reasonable question? Hmm

MrsWobble3 · 07/08/2018 21:44

If TM is unable to get a deal through parliament, and that triggers a vote of no confidence and then a general election, if labour include rescinding A50 in their manifesto and win the election, they would then have a democratic mandate to do so. It would be interesting to know how many voters would switch traditional allegiances to get the Brexit result they want. I suspect I might.

Ta1kinpeace · 07/08/2018 21:47

MrsWobble
Lots of ifs in there
for a start, Corbyn is - and always has been - anti EU

MrsWobble3 · 07/08/2018 22:02

Is Corbyn in charge?

Ta1kinpeace · 07/08/2018 22:05

Of Labour, yes, in a vice like grip.
His Momentum fan club will deselect any "Blairites" who will go against him before any election.

sar501 · 07/08/2018 22:12

I voted leave. It wasn’t an easy decision and it took me weeks to decide. I put my hands up I now deeply regret it. I think part of me felt it would never happen. I have never been a fan of the EU. It has become increasingly undemocratic over the years and our influence has dwindled as more and more nations joined. I do not agree with the Schengen Agreement and we never signed up to it. It’s been looking increasingly likely that the EU may breakup one day and I felt that by leaving via Brexit it would give us a head start. However I still think the consequences far outweigh the benefits - I think it could have a devastating effect on our economy and the consequences of that are just too great. In the event of a no deal I think the Government should suspend the whole process. Yes there will be protests but what’s the alternative?

Ta1kinpeace · 07/08/2018 22:19

sar501
Thank you for your post. Interesting your thought process then and since.

Moussemoose · 07/08/2018 22:23

sar501 you say the EU has become 'increasingly undemocratic' and I hear a lot of that from leavers.

Are you just talking about the dilution of votes as we are one of 28 and not one of 12? Or is there something else that concerns you.

FWIW the EU is a democratic organisation with more checks and balances than the U.K. parliament.

Peregrina · 07/08/2018 22:24

sar501 If Brexit had been gone about in a more considered way i.e. with proper plans, and sensible timescales, and without the silly slogans, do you think you would have had cause to regret your vote?

keyboardkate · 07/08/2018 22:40

I think (hope) that the tide is turning a bit now that reality begins to bite.

I am very disappointed at the lack of planning, lack of information, the hubris and arrogance of the British side in all this.

Everyone fears the unknown. That is a fact. What exactly do we know really...... nothing!

prettybird · 07/08/2018 22:55

Which country was it again that encouraged the Eastern European countries to join the EU? Hmm

And even now, is encouraging the Balkan countries to join the EU? Hmm

Confused
PestymcPestFace · 07/08/2018 23:01

We have 73 out of 751 MEPs. The only reason we are heard less is because so many of our MEPs are UKIP.
We don't have a one in 28 say, we are nearer one in 10

KennDodd · 07/08/2018 23:12

@sar501

Well done for being brave enough to rethink. Do you talk about this at all in real life? I ask because some Leave voters I know (not the racists, they're still frothing at the mouth about how much they hate the EU) have gone very quiet about this, from being confident and happy right after the vote, they just seem a bit embarrassed about the whole thing now.

keyboardkate · 07/08/2018 23:15

Pesty,

I think UK MEPs are decided on the D'Hondt proportional representation voting system.

Unlike FPTP in Westminster elections. Yin and Yang forever so.

KennDodd · 07/08/2018 23:16

@sar501

BTW I voted Remain but really wish sometimes I could be on board with leave, I really do search for positives of Brexit, I follow Vote Leave on Facebook but the positives just don't stand up to scrutiny for me.

Peregrina · 07/08/2018 23:18

I thought N Ireland elected their MEPs via the STV system?

keyboardkate · 07/08/2018 23:25

Peregrina.

Yes you are right. STV in NI. D'Hondt in the UK (minus the NI appendage!).

STV (proportional representation) is the way the Irish elect their reps in the Dail (Parliament), and I can tell you it is just addictive watching the counts there. Some can go on for a long while, and the tallymen keep an eye on every single box!

FPTP is just so unrepresentative and quite frankly, boring too. The only thing the commentators can comment on is the "Swing" to either Red or Blue.

Peregrina · 07/08/2018 23:32

I so wish we could have a proper PR system for the Westminster Parliament. It won't happen with either the Tories or Labour - the current FPTP system suits them both. Maybe if we crash out and the Tories and Labour both destroy themselves, they might change their minds!

Yes, there is a danger that you could let the UKIPers in, but I would very much doubt whether they could win sufficient seats to make too much difference.

PestymcPestFace · 08/08/2018 08:17

PR would lead to a very different system. I have 6 MEPs representing me. 2 UKIP, 2 Conservative , 1 Labour and 1 Green. I am free to contact any or all of them. www.europarl.europa.eu/unitedkingdom/en/your-meps/uk_meps.html In RL I have one Westminster MP, an old school Tory.

PestymcPestFace · 08/08/2018 08:19

About 30% of UK MEPs are UKIP

I find this fact scary.

Talkstotrees · 08/08/2018 08:44

About 30% of UK MEPs are UKIP

I find this fact scary.

It’s ridiculous and embarrassing and shows how little thought the voting public gave to the EU Parl. We were never encouraged to engage with the EU, they were a handy scapegoat to the UK Govt (plus of course excellent value for money for international negotiations, research, legislation, etc).

It’s a total depressing shambles.

Peregrina · 08/08/2018 08:57

UKIP were clever enough to work the system. As they did with the Leave Campaign.
