Its all going so badly and everyone is worried, but what can be done?

Do we want another referendum and the whole Brexit thing aborted? Do we want another leader doing something different? Do we think Teresa May is doing everything that can be done?

I say "do we think" but to be honest, I don't think anything either way of Teresa May, I don't know what to think.

I don't know what could make things better at this stage

Shame she's such a racist xenophobe though

Peregrina · 06/08/2018 06:41

Yes, coudn't agree more Ta1kin, although I suspect she doesn't recognise that she is.

SacrebleuLondres · 06/08/2018 08:49

@Jason118

The reality is there is no version of Brexit that won't damage the economy and isolate and therefore weaken the UK.

I personally find the most worrisome aspect of these discussions - incl at EUReferendum - is the narrow focus on goods trade - ie what model of goods trade will the UK have with the EU and RoW.

We are bound to the EU by so much more.

Aviation. Services trade. Energy. Nuclear fuel. Medical isotopes. Medicine. Security. Research. Education. Transport. Galileo. ...

All of this will need to be recreated in some form once the damage has been inflicted.

So sad.

PestymcPestFace · 06/08/2018 10:34

Focusing on goods is a distraction.

We are leaving because we will gain something, that something is money. twitter.com/tfoale/status/1025630498431926272 If we don't sort out a good deal for the City, that money will have to be dirty money.

Complete parliamentary reform is what I want done.

keyboardkate · 06/08/2018 11:27

Article 50 may be capable of being rescinded, but it is still not clear if that is actually the case. Furthermore if this could happen, there would be nothing to stop any and all EU countries from invoking Article 50, and then changing their minds close to the leave date. What a waste of time that would be for the negotiators.

Anyway, and this is obviously just my personal view, Theresa May should consider resigning immediately, or at the start of the new Parliamentary term, stating the absolute impossibility of Brexit, and her unwillingness to place the UK and its people in financial or other jeopardy.

Then the Rees Moggs etc. could fight each other to be PM and bring through Brexit themselves. Theresa May would in my view leave a great legacy behind by having the courage to actually LEAD and call this disaster for what it is.

golondrina · 06/08/2018 13:31

Ihatemycar you clearly know nothing about the second world war and its aftermath. Go and read some history.

Ihatemycar · 07/08/2018 00:01

@golondrina have you read a history book? Read about our history with Europe.
Bitch pleaaasee! Can't wait to be out...

Ihatemycar · 07/08/2018 00:16

@prettybird very interesting reply. I understand that the Uk got Marshal Aid but this was a war that wasn't ours. Germany was the attacker and France surrender before allowing Paris to be destroyed.
I worked and lived in Brussels and meet Jewish people still with tattoos from the camps.
My df suffered so much as a child with no parents during the war.
I just want to leave the EU because I believe it's for the best.
I only want for people to understand how strong we are and to be behind the vote.
For good or for bad we had a choice and millions of us truly believe it's for the best.
If I didn't believe that we are stronger out I would have voted to stay.
17.4 million people believe we are better than the EU. I'm sure we are going to be successful. I don't understand the adoration for the EU. I really don't.

Ihatemycar · 07/08/2018 00:19

@KennDodd I hate my car because it's too big and wide. Doesn't fit anywhere. I'm stuck with it and I hate it.

Peregrina · 07/08/2018 00:39

I think you need to read a bit more history Ihatemycar. A lot happened before Germany invaded Paris.

Although you might be interested to know that a German general refused to obey orders when retreating to blow the bridges up, because he didn't want to see such a beautiful city destroyed.

nicebitofquiche · 07/08/2018 00:57

We'd quite like people on MN to shut up about it because it's becoming increasingly monotonous having the same posts over and over again.

Ihatemycar · 07/08/2018 02:06

@Peregrina indeed a lot happened before Paris.
I've read, I lived in Paris and Brussels I know what happen to all those poor people and also who was responsible for their suffering. You can't denied Germany was responsible for their suffering and yet they stick together like friends.
I don't know why they hate us so much and people here loves Europe so much.
I'll never trust them and I never want for younger generations to forget history.

What book do you think I should read to educate myself? What part of history I'm I missing? I love many counties in Europe I just don't want to be part of the block like 17.4 million people in the UK.

Ihatemycar · 07/08/2018 02:08

@nicebitofquiche you don't have to join the conversation. You can Leave...

MozzieMagnet · 07/08/2018 02:46

rescind article 50

Jason118 · 07/08/2018 07:52

Interesting insight from ihatemycar - uses the word believe/belief many times and I'm increasingly of the opinion that the reasons for leaving cannot be argued as rational. You can't argue against irrational belief and get anywhere.

golondrina · 07/08/2018 08:25

Ihatemycar with every post you make it clear you don't know what you're talking about. And yes, I have studied quite a lot of history actually, recent and ancient and up to degree level. In particular postwar politics and the second world war.

Helmetbymidnight · 07/08/2018 08:26

I don't know why they hate us so much and people here loves Europe so much

You can’t debate with people who talk such bollocks.

Peregrina · 07/08/2018 08:39

You can't denied Germany was responsible for their suffering and yet they stick together like friends.

No one did. IMO the founding fathers of the EEC were hugely courageous to say that there had been enough suffering and they needed to join forces, initially in coal and steel so that they couldn't wage war on each other. Contrast that with the UK's we won the war, we are important because of our Empire, which still goes on.

As for what to read, although it's aimed at KS3 BBC Bitesize is a good place to start. Pages 5 and 6 especially talk about the causes and mention Hugh Trevor-Roper, and AJP Taylor which give contrasting right and left wing views of the causes of War. One book I have on the shelf right behind me, is Taylor's ' The Origins of the Second World War', but my copy is a 1963 revision! I am quite sure that there will be later authors who have the different perspective which has been lent with time.

I always feel that historians, writing about the British Empire will pick out two key dates - 1956 when Britain and France realised that they were no longer world powers, and 2016, when the Referendum led to Britain destroying the remains of its standing in the world.

Quietrebel · 07/08/2018 08:41

I hate my car because it's too big and wide. Doesn't fit anywhere. I'm stuck with and I hate it.

Much like Brexit then 😂

Helmetbymidnight · 07/08/2018 08:46

It makes me despair that people with such a poor grasp of history, politics and economics are intent on bringing our country to its knees.

Rosstac · 07/08/2018 08:48

I am some of the 17.4 million want a stop or pause to FOM, if we can stay in the EU and achieve that then its good for everyone, if not, then its looking at this moment as we are leaving with no deal, but as with the EU we will have to wait to the last minute to see if they can come up with a deal, AsTM said a no deal is better than a bad deal

Quietrebel · 07/08/2018 09:01

Rosstac no deal can only be better than a bad deal if no deal is the status quo.

Helmetbymidnight · 07/08/2018 09:01

Yeah I’ve read most of your wildly incoherent posts rosstac. you expect to see middle class people lose their jobs and homes but that’s fine because that won’t affect working class people much.
Whatever happens to the economy because of Brexit is worth it -,As long as we get rid of a few poles.

Quietrebel · 07/08/2018 09:04

If you were to sell your house but can't find a buyer for the right price, would you stay put or put your property up for auction?

Peregrina · 07/08/2018 09:16

Why should the EU come up with a deal? Did they ask the UK to Leave? Or are you still going on about 'they need us more than we need them'?
If 17.4 million wanted to stop FoM you are admitting that this was the only issue for Leave voters, but other Leave voters are adamant that they are not anti-immigrant, and take the huff when it's said. Don't spoil it for them Rosstac.
