Keen to hear, as I am struggling.

OP posts:

There have been several threads on here recently- and I get the sense that Irish posters are talking to themselves.

It seems to me that the greater British public are just not engaging with it.

I can't get my head around this at all.

BaronessBlonde · 23/07/2018 22:59

Yep, ballyhoo, I can't get my head around it.
It's so irresponsible.

scottishdiem · 23/07/2018 23:04

Ireland stopping with this independence malarky and rejoining the UK.....

Seems to be the favoured option of Brexiters who dont give a shite about anyones opinion other than those who aspire to the Glory of England.

Since moving to Dublin 18 months ago (partly Brexit inspired - needed to use some treaty rights) I have been amazed at Brexiter ignorance and arrogance on Ireland and the border. They are still seriously pissed that Ireland wants to stay in the EU and isnt doing what England bloody well tells them.

heartsease68 · 24/07/2018 00:16

Really Scottish I'm hurt by that

Mmm. Sorry. But on this side of the Irish sea, with the exception of two Faragian outliers, there is near universal disdain now for the UK and how it is dealing with Ireland and the Irish Border. It the discussion was kept to technical issues about the border or even the fine print in the GFA then things wouldnt be so bad.

But the Brexiter press has been disdainful of Ireland, its politicans and policy positions. Favourite insult of the Brexit press is to refer to the political leader of Ireland as the Prime Minister. That is not his title at all but we dont want Ireland to get all uppity and use its own ideas now do we?

BaronessBlonde · 24/07/2018 08:10

scottish (I'm Irish in Ireland)
I don't know that I've got to the point of disdain for the UK....but I am so disappointed.

bellinisurge · 24/07/2018 08:29

As long as TM is in thrall to those DUP bastards, I don't see any blue sky thinking on this from the UK.

Irish person living in the UK... I don’t hold the whole of the UK is disdain. But I certainly hold Brexit voters responsible.

For all their protestations about not being racist and actually being well informed, I’ve yet to meet a Brexit voter who wasn’t at their core a racist idiot.

Cleebope2 · 24/07/2018 12:01

Brandnewhouse are you for real?”still no reason”...have you even read this thread? You sum up the really ignorant views of the majority of Brexiteers and the general UK public. The Good Friday Agreement set in stone that NI can only become rejoined to Ireland with majority consent both north and south. It can’t just be given back. International law doesn’t allow it.

heartsease68 · 24/07/2018 12:14

BrandNewHouse I hold you in disdain. You do realise innocent people will die if they do that? But as if you say, in for a penny, in for a pound. I hope someone leaves you in a punctured dingy somewhere aquatic.

bellinisurge · 24/07/2018 12:22

@BrandNewHouse , please do a bit of research on the recent history of NI and why your suggestion is terrible.

We clearly don't need any British government to shaft anyone when we have you to do it for us brand.

heartsease68 · 24/07/2018 14:22

And no, you're not on the side of anyone with a rational mind.

@BrandNewHouse - I'm sorry I didn't know your "back story", as it were. It's all a horrible mess that was anticipated by so many people and is minimised by a lot of Brexiteers.
Peace isn't easy. I wish Brexiteers would remember that.

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 24/07/2018 17:17

I have to say, I can totally see what brand has described happening. Absolutely. The U.K. government are in the shit regardless of what happens now. They are absolutely up shit creek. There is no good solution to the shitshow they have created. I can totally see TM and co dissolving all partnership with the Duppers and totally abandoning ship. The mess she will leave will be gathered up by JRM and the like and NI will be fucked.

Peregrina · 24/07/2018 17:24

I think Brand is describing what a lot of English (and I do mean English) people feel. Those who know that N Ireland is part of the UK that is.

Yes, England treated parts of Ireland like shit

treats. England ^treats Ireland like shit. I mean, I don’t have to give you examples do I?

The rest of Europe has largely accepted that 'shit happened' but are willing to move forward.

They are able to move forward because England is no longer taking a huge shitty stick and stirring up their political stability. Ireland is still at the mercy of England. Ireland is still, right now, at this moment in time, being tossed around like a rag doll by England.

bellinisurge · 24/07/2018 18:36

Different European countries have recent experience of being bossed around and belittled or overlooked by bigger countries/invading countries/colonial powers. A bit foolish to say that the other 26 don't care about Ireland or NI.

Cleebope2 · 24/07/2018 18:51

Brandnewhouse I think you needed to explain that earlier post better. I took it as meaning that that’s what you thought should or could happen rather than meaning that you wouldn’t put it past the UK government to try to get rid of NI. I’m sure the English would all vote to set NI afloat if they could but they legally can’t ! They’ve wanted rid of us for decades (despite all their false claims that they value the union) and the GFA was meant to make that path easier and democratically possible.

54321go · 24/07/2018 18:57

@Awoman
The amplitude of your reply highlights why NI is such a problem. Westminster treats almost everywhere outside Westminster like shit. NI doesn't own all of it.
I do not know the full history of Ireland and in some respects it does not matter. BOTH or indeed ALL sides have suffered in the past. Draw a line under that and move on. The island of the rest of Britain was invaded repeatedly by 'others'. I am not about to parade in front of my new neighbours on the anniversary of some battle that 'we' won, partly because it is not important now, and partly that on another occasion they would feel it necessary to tell me when they won.
Until all sides stop antagonising the others there will not be real peace.
The threat of renewed (or heightened) violence is causing a major stumbling block for Brexit negotiations, taking the 'we won' slogan of 'Leavers' to whole new meanings.
