It's official

Brexit is like an episode of Dads Army with the government, being Captain Mainwaring's trusty band of elite forces doing battle against the evil Mr Barnier.

Yesterday Parliament gave back control to the executive as it surrendered parliamentary sovereignty to Janus faced May. Grieve, it has to be said, truly did look like a broken man as he gave his speech in the commons. Not that we should have too much sympathy. After all he did just put party before country.

So where are we now? The ERG are happy. They have successfully bullied enough until everyone else gave up and folded. They now have no incentive to compromise, as they know that no one can stand up to them. They want no deal, and it's no deal they will force.

The EU are thoroughly fed up and it's difficult to see them do anything but cut us loose saying Brexit means Brexit, this is what you wanted. They have stepped up planning for no deal and their plans were already much more advanced than ours.

We go into the next round of talks with a solution to the Irish Border looking further away than ever. Not helped by the fact that brexit nationalism is restricted to England alone, with many being happy to let NI be sunk into the Irish sea and the favour the rebuilding of Hadrian's wall in order to keep out the foreigners.

It's hard to resist simply sitting down wailing "we doomed". But try to resist and keep saying, you are against this crap. If only so history books don't just say we all agreed to this clusterfuck.

Here have a fluffy bunny to help comfort you.

I wonder if May has been told (I doubt she thought it up on her own) that if the UK is late, the EU will have to accept whatever we submit ?

BigChocFrenzy · 26/06/2018 15:43

bellini No deal means Uk exports to the EU - and probably to many other countries - stop for several months until certifications can be arranged.
It means log-jammed ports, no international flights, supermarket shortages and rationing, inflation, 100,000s losing jobs.
Even May - or her successor - would find all that hard to fudge.

I still think the EU will want a transition to prepare for "no deal"
which can be sold as them "blinking"
but if the UK govt squander that time too, then it just puts off the crisis until 2 January 2020

ooh, just realised, I retire end of that month. Thank goodness I'll miss that clusterf@ck in the UK

BigChocFrenzy · 26/06/2018 15:46

DG The 3 Dunces - DD, Bojo, Fox - and most Brexiters still think the EU will blink at the last moment
A transition period - if it happens - will seem like Blink part I.
There will be no part II

AndSheSteppedOnTheBall · 26/06/2018 15:50

BigChoc

My pension is in sterling, but it can be transferred into a Euro pension scheme if I move. Again though, left too late and that's a big hit to take.

Alternatively, I'm only in my 30s, so I could leave it where it is and hope it has ridden out the worst of it by the time I retire. Enough time to build a new pension pot in Euros in the meantime.

Cherrypi · 26/06/2018 15:57

Then during transition the economy will crash.

“There is no space” for customs checks at Dover and Channel Tunnel “literally on the cliff edge” says Eurotunnel boss John Keefe - need to process inland...

bellinisurge · 26/06/2018 15:58

I'm a Prepper @BigChocFrenzy . That stuff you listed holds no fear for me. I voted Remain to avoid chaos. I lost. So I make preparations to deal with chaos around me. Food, water, loo, light, heat. Entertainment. Plan B in place. And Plan C etc.

MrsRRR · 26/06/2018 16:06

I'm trying Bellini...

I'd be interested in your plans so far!!

woman11017 · 26/06/2018 16:07

And also from Keefe, cherrypi:

Contingency planning? “As we know absolutely nothing from the Government about what Day 1 No Deal would look like, we can’t build infrastructure, can’t recruit people, cant specify systems - we can’t construct anything” - says Eurotunnel director John Keefe

DGRossetti · 26/06/2018 16:10

I see the BBC is now reporting BoJos "fuck business" comment in full - including quoting the exact phrase

(pic, or it didn't happen Smile)

Tories join in with one of the national socialists' favourite pastimes.
@JolyonMaugham
The Tories are selling Jews and Muslims down the river for their precious Brexit. God, I'm so ashamed. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-theresa-may-hungary-sanctions-eu-alliance-populism-right-wing-a8417846.html

bellinisurge · 26/06/2018 16:12

Grow plenty of veg. Have camping gear which I know how to use. Know about collecting and boiling water. Have food stuffs and water in garage. Learned some food preserving skills so I don't have a glut from the garden.
Loads of other stuff.
There's a prepper topic on here you can take a look at. I mainly prepped for being snowed in because it's been the most likely hiccup until now. Had it when my dd was tiny - we only live in the suburbs ffs. Adding Brexit nonsense and interrupted food supply etc to my list of bad shit that is likelyto happen.

MrsRRR · 26/06/2018 16:20

I find the prepper a bit....scary 😖

MrsRRR · 26/06/2018 16:20

Prepper topic that should read

bellinisurge · 26/06/2018 16:25

Don't be scared @MrsRRR . Just imagine you get snowed in (hard in this heat, I know!) and what would you like to have in the house to make it a bit easier.
There's a lot of grrrrrr angry camo bedecked men on YouTube you can dip in and out of. But also some sensible and more human types like Prepper Pot Pourri - all the angry camo men are in awe of her; also Praxis Prepper (very funny) and Prepper Princess whose budgeting tips are transferable to the UK.

Brexit pushes Theresa May into alliance with Hungary's right-wing populists as Tories vote against sanctions

Hungarian foreign minister comes to UK aid on Brexit hours after Tories side with populists

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-theresa-may-hungary-sanctions-eu-alliance-populism-right-wing-a8417846.html

'Populist' isn't a term that even old Churchill would have used for these *s.

Member for Uxbridge and South Ruislip has just expressed his admiration for the child/woman abuser in chief. Fair enough, they do have a lot in common.

With eviscerated operational public services or funded accountable police/emergency and security services, it's not just getting food that worries me bellini.

'brexit' is so like what happened in Yugoslavia.

It is scary MrsRR Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 26/06/2018 16:26

I find the EU stakeholder warnings terrifying, because these are the various EU experts in each sector telling business what to prep for.

EU business, but the UK ones should study carefully, because the UK govt produces only drivelling sound-bites

bellinisurge · 26/06/2018 16:29

Just focus on your family/your situation and what you might need to make difficult stuff easier for you. Think realistically what that difficult stuff might be. Don't be overwhelmed. Think short term to start and, if you want, take it from there.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/06/2018 16:29

That Liberal MEP summed it up:

"* Voting with Orbán is the true Tory Brexit: the exit from European values.*

A sad day.”

OlennasWimple · 26/06/2018 16:32

I find the preppers topic scary too - I vacillate between stockpiling cans and batteries and ignoring everything (though where I live, power cuts are fairly common, so pretty much everyone has a few days' worth of long life food anyway)

BigChocFrenzy · 26/06/2018 16:32

Bellini That prepping covers getting basic food & shelter.
Almost all of us have far more than that now - and would be bitterly angry to lose it

bellinisurge · 26/06/2018 16:33

The comical (sort of) thing is that watching the news the other night, my dh said we maybe need to think about getting some extra bits in, just in case.
He jokes about my prepping - joking is good, by the way.
Already have one or two bits, I said. Happy to get more.
Of course it is more than just food and water but that is a good place to start.

woman11017 · 26/06/2018 16:33

Did you see who the tories lined up with BCF?
Tory MEPs joined Ukip, as well as continental far-right parties including the French Front National, Austria’s FPOe, and Sweden Democrats in voting against

bellinisurge · 26/06/2018 16:34

On it, @BigChocFrenzy . Just don't want to scare anyone who is new to it.

woman11017 · 26/06/2018 16:38

Almost all of us have far more than that now
Rule of law's always was one of my favourites.
