It's official

Brexit is like an episode of Dads Army with the government, being Captain Mainwaring's trusty band of elite forces doing battle against the evil Mr Barnier.

Yesterday Parliament gave back control to the executive as it surrendered parliamentary sovereignty to Janus faced May. Grieve, it has to be said, truly did look like a broken man as he gave his speech in the commons. Not that we should have too much sympathy. After all he did just put party before country.

So where are we now? The ERG are happy. They have successfully bullied enough until everyone else gave up and folded. They now have no incentive to compromise, as they know that no one can stand up to them. They want no deal, and it's no deal they will force.

The EU are thoroughly fed up and it's difficult to see them do anything but cut us loose saying Brexit means Brexit, this is what you wanted. They have stepped up planning for no deal and their plans were already much more advanced than ours.

We go into the next round of talks with a solution to the Irish Border looking further away than ever. Not helped by the fact that brexit nationalism is restricted to England alone, with many being happy to let NI be sunk into the Irish sea and the favour the rebuilding of Hadrian's wall in order to keep out the foreigners.

It's hard to resist simply sitting down wailing "we doomed". But try to resist and keep saying, you are against this crap. If only so history books don't just say we all agreed to this clusterfuck.

Here have a fluffy bunny to help comfort you.

Tory Ultra loony wants to nationalise Airbus 🤦🏻‍♀️

(imagine the outcry if Labour wanted to nationalise one of the largest manufacturers in the country)

This is another sign that some Tories are adopting classic fascist confiscation policies, instead of traditional Tory business-friendly ones

David C Bannermann@DCBMEP*
Frankly I think if @Airbus @airbusukfc did try to leave UK under a ‘no deal scenario’ (which would attract legal compensation anyway) < only legal minimum redundancy pay > we should consider nationalising the U.K. company, create a new UK defence & civil company then privatise that as one.

Way to start a trade war instead of a trade deal: 🤦🏻‍♀️
- nationalise / confiscate a company mostly owned by the govts of Germany, France, Spain.

Great way to make Airbus - and other tech manufacturers - plan to flee the county asap

btw, British Aerospace short-sightedly sold its stake in Airbus in the early Naughties for short-term profit
and then when it tried to buy it back, the others refused, saying it was too unreliable a partner.

Tambien · 23/06/2018 13:37

I am wondering how they will nationalise a company that is ONLY 11% british...
Or are they saying that they will force Germany, France, Spain to nationalise a company, even if they don’t want to?

AndSheSteppedOnTheBall · 23/06/2018 13:58

They can’t nationalise it, because it’s not a British company. These people are idiots. Head brocialist Aaron Bastani was calling for it to be nationalised as well - he got short shrift on his twitter feed.

The hard left and the hard right are bananas.

TheElementsSong · 23/06/2018 14:13

Or are they saying that they will force Germany, France, Spain to nationalise a company, even if they don’t want to?

It's DontTheyKnowWhoWeAre, isn't it?

And FlowersFlowersFlowers to everybody marching today, thank you all!

AndSheSteppedOnTheBall · 23/06/2018 14:21

@TheNewEuropean

Crowds chanting “where’s Jeremy Corbyn?” To the chant his supporters sing...

54321go · 23/06/2018 14:28

Threatening to nationalise a whole host of big industry could be embarrassing when you look at who owns them.
TATA (Indian) own JLR, Tetley (a large chunk of the food industries) and much more.
Railways, bus services, power generation much of which is 'foreign' owned.
Mrs Miggins pie shop might be British however.

DGRossetti · 23/06/2018 14:37

The Tories are now the party of nationalisation ?

I'm waiting for Corbyn to plug private healthcare and schooling.

DGRossetti · 23/06/2018 14:40

We could nationalise Dyson and Wetherspoons.

HesterThrale · 23/06/2018 14:59

Atmosphere is fantastic. A speaker just said that this march is over twice as big as any previous Brexit one.

OlennasWimple · 23/06/2018 15:36

one major problem that the advertised job for aviation chief (max 70k !) must handle.

Isn't that salary itself a joke - suitable for a middle manager. If you think about it a Local authority Director of Education is probably paid £150,000 for managing a couple of hundred schools, (or if you are an Academy CEO £350,000 for looking after a dozen schools), but someone who has the responsibity ultimately to see that hundreds of planes can fly and thousands of staff keep employed, is offered the salary that a manager of about 50 people might expect

The DfT job was for a Grade 6 civil servant (hence the salary level. Fun fact: once upon a time MPs' salaries were supposed to be in line with Grade 6 salaries), who in turn will report to a Deputy Director (on around £75k) who will report to a Director (on around £90k) who reports to the Permanent Secretary in the department (prob around £120k). Grade 6 is a middle manager position - one level below the Senior Civil Service.

HesterThrale · 23/06/2018 15:42

Storming speech from Caroline Lucas.

Quietrebel · 23/06/2018 16:58

Long time lurker here, hello everyone and thank you for keeping these threads going. It has been said before but I'll say it again: red's indefatigable efforts deserve a medal!! Anyway, I've just seen a few posts on another thread which appalled me (more than usual). When I hear of some embittered leavers' true motivation- ie anyone better off should suffer with them, that's the whole point- it reminds me of murder-suicide cases... I think the level of desperation is chilling but this government will never help them. Ever.

ttprw · 23/06/2018 17:02

Yeah.

I try and comfort myself that lots of those posters on those brexit threads are Russian/US bots...

RedToothBrush · 23/06/2018 17:43

Iain Dale @ iaindale
PM: Boris, did you really say ‘fuck business?’
BJ: Yes I did, Prime Minister. But let me explain...
PM: Not interested. You’re sacked.

That’s how the conversation ought to go. It won’t, of course, but it ought to. Enough is enough.

Interesting to see this tweeted by and conservative supporter and Brexiteer. Also interesting to see it retweeted by Tory MP Nicholas Soames.

Does he also say 'fuck my constitutants?

Anyway do read this FT article:

Flowers Hester and all the marchers. Thank you and wow! There are estimates of 200 000. prettybird an excellent turnout for the one in Stirling too. Smile

woman11017 · 23/06/2018 17:51

And Belfast!

BigChocFrenzy · 23/06/2018 17:52

The better off will be much better to cope if there is a no deal Brexit,
e.g. stocking up in advance, travelling to buy goods in short supply
not so likely to need benefits, which would be the first thing to be cut if trade / govt tax income suffers a Brexit meltdown

and they are more likely to have the skills to be able to emigrate
(- or do Brexiters dream of a wall like around the former East Germany, to stop people escaping ?)

Of course, home-owners and BTLers would suffer if house prices & rents crash - but that would also hammer the Tories main core vote
So the govt will try to prevent that at all costs

ttprw · 23/06/2018 17:52

Well done marchers!

Hope you had a great day.

Interesting that this march is being reported on...bbc, sky, ch 4....

BigChocFrenzy · 23/06/2018 17:54

Well done, Westministender marchers everywhere - London, Stirling, Belfast, …
You are ace ! ThanksThanksThanksStarStarStarStarStar

54321go · 23/06/2018 18:12

Thanks for the link RTB, but in a way I wish you hadn't as it sort of backs up things I was hoping wasn't likely to happen.
It does underline the need for close friends though.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 23/06/2018 18:16

Was a wonderful march. I couldn't get to the where it was meant to start, so ended up slotting in near the beginning. Popped for a drink and some lunch when I got to Westminster, popped back to see some of the speeches before going home and there were still people streaming down Whitehall. Definitely the biggest one I've been to.

May's Brexit Red Line on Customs Union Could Be Next to Go

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-04-11/may-s-brexit-red-line-on-customs-union-could-be-next-to-go

BigChocFrenzy · 23/06/2018 18:33

All depends what she's more scared of:
Economic Armageddon, or the Ultras & Tory civil war.

I suspect the latter

DGRossetti · 23/06/2018 19:03

From that Bloomberg ...

Added to this, the growing view in May’s office is that, after a narrow referendum result and a close general election, she has no mandate for an extreme Brexit, according to an official.

And they've realised this now ?!?!?!?!?!?!

I think we need Prof Cox to explain how information seems to travel at - what ? 100 metres in two years ?

DGRossetti · 23/06/2018 19:05

Incidentally, I can't find anyone to give me odds on Brexit happening. Bookies are no fools ...

We are not able to provide a statistical measure of your wager, because 'Brexit' has no clear definition upon which a stake or claim could be made or paid.
