Westminstenders: Rebel or Reveal

The EU Withdrawal Bill made it through the Commons. Though May did not manage it unscathed.

In an attempt to divide and conquer the Rebels, May might have damaged trust. We shall find out. The Grieve Amendment faces the Lords. We also will see if the Lords will back down on their amendments or apply some new ones for the Commons to deal with in Parliamentary Ping Pong.

Aaron Banks has been exposed as being pally with the Russian Embassy in a plot twist that absolutely everyone saw coming.

Meanwhile the EU thinks we have already run out of time and is preparing options to extend talks beyond the a50 deadline. These include having MEPs for the 2019 - 2024 session.

There is also growing talk around Europe that freedom of movement in its current form is unsustainable. Ironically we might see the EU adopt something akin to Cameron's pre-referendum proposals as the EU reforms.

Theresa May has also announced - at a moment when she is looking particularly weak - a new tax for the NHS, cunningly disguised in spin as 'the Brexit dividend'. Of course shareholders don't always get dividends and at times of poor economic performance instead might be asked to stump up extra capital...Expect to see buses with £350 million of the side just in time for the next general election cycle.

And so the Zombie PM limbers on towards the end of the summer session and the relative safety of the summer holidays. More drama, cringing and disbelief guaranteed before we get there.

Someone recently asked (sorry can't find it now) if this thread could be made more prominent on Mumsnet to get an even wider readership. I can't remember how I originally found this thread, but I just now did an experiment to see if I could search for it from the homepage. I'm not a Mumsnet expert, but it does seem really hidden away.
How do people find it?

Long time westmindenders lurker here and so grateful to you all for this sensible and informative thread Flowers

I just want to echo a pp about the march. I live in France and there has been a noticeable shift in attitudes recently from sadness and confusion to the Gallic shrug and English are arrogant and will get what they deserve (I am paraphrasing no-one has actually used those exact words Smile) . It's so important that we remind our friends in the eu that we are not one homogenous right wing empire deluded population and that there are many of us who are extremely upset at what is happening in our name.

Our own government might ignore us but others will notice.

AndSheSteppedOnTheBall · 21/06/2018 07:30

Been awake half the night again. Haven’t slept well for about three weeks now.

The whips aren’t holding Corbyn over the rebels, the risk is that May will be ousted and replaced with a full-on Brexit ultra like JRM, Gove or Johnson.

It’s a choice between May’s Brexit or the hardliners Brexit, which are increasingly looking like the same thing.

Corbyn will not get us out of this mess, even if by some miracle he were to become leader. He needs Brexit too. The ideologues have taken over and they need the crisis to precipitate their revolution.

MessyMeTarr · 21/06/2018 07:38

I'm really quite worried now, but if I ever say anything, people look at me like I need sectioning. I feel so powerless. Stockpiling is all well and good, but I'd have no means whatsoever of stopping anyone who decided they wanted it. I hate this.

Just seen this via Twitter.

AndSheSteppedOnTheBall · 21/06/2018 07:54

Yes, James Patrick is in full-on prepper mode now, and he’s not been wrong yet.

Christ I hope he’s wrong now though. I just don’t know what to do. It feels crazy to uproot our entire lives now, based on a complete unknown. But it might be too late to wait til the crisis actually comes. What if we can’t get out?

KennDodd · 21/06/2018 07:57

Someone recently asked (sorry can't find it now) if this thread could be made more prominent

Maybe somebody could start a Brexit prepers thread with information on we're we are with Brexit and practical information on how best to prepare.

I'm getting chickens and am going to stockpile household essentials. For us, soft Brexit means the loss of my job, hard Brexit means DH losses his job and so probably our house as well.

KennDodd · 21/06/2018 07:59

I really wish we could just pack up and leave the country. Unfortunately neither of us have the skills to join the brain drain.

Theworldisfullofgs · 21/06/2018 08:00

I'm really worried.
We can't move as dd has just got into a great sixth form. When she's finished we might look to move to Scotland (or france).
I just feel like the government hasn't a clue.

lonelyplanetmum · 21/06/2018 08:02

Did anyone see TMs speech on the Downing Street Facebook page.

On the one hand it's unbearable viewing. On the other hand it's peculiar.

Why keep banging on about how you're delivering the Brexit people voted for at each stage of the process? Especially when you know half the people didn't want that. She sounds odd and making the broadcast in the first place is odd too.

I think I'm generally a realist and not inclined to excessive optimism. I am seriously worried by this whole clusterfuck throughout every day. Yet I do keep wondering if messages like this could be softeners for a BINO type fudge.

Sounds plausible... but does anyone on here know what an "association agreement" would mean in practice?

Irene An association agreement is another term used by the EU to describe a free trade agreement with additional political cooperation objectives.

What's being discussed in the Guardian article is whether the EU will accept a special deal for the UK ie free movement of goods, but no free movement of people and services, which the EU has already said they won't accept because it's cherry picking. Looks unlikely and leaves the UK services sector up the swannie; outside the EU.

Better than nowt so logically acceptable to the h of p, as it has the "smack of realism".

Still overall a big clusterfuck!

RedToothBrush · 21/06/2018 08:29

How do people find it?

Westminstenders is often one of the threads in 'most active'. Particularly in late evenings. I think we get a lot of new traffic from that.

Was it unopposed by Labour?
The poll tax was unopposed by labour. They were actively discouraging to those who took part in the organisation of resistance, again I know, I was there. They left it to grassroots protest groups, Socialist Workers and SNP to protest.

“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do"

I agree, this quote from To Kill a Mockingbird is so relevant, Peregrina

IrenetheQuaint · 21/06/2018 08:34

Thanks Scoop! My understanding is that the single market in services is much less developed (specifically in the regulatory sense) than the single market in goods; but financial services are the massive issue here, I guess.

And clearly we would have to make some compromises on FoM, though as someone pointed out upthread we have always been the most liberal of EU states in this respect, so it might be possible... if the Home Office was less useless and the PM less rigid...

prettybird · 21/06/2018 08:39

The EU has said on many occasions that it will not allow cherry picking. The 4 pillars of the single market mean free movement of goods = free movement of people. The Government really does seem to have cloth ears Confused

And I'm sure that the Financial Sector, which doesn't count as goods, will be delighted to be considered expendable Hmm

Scoopofchaff · 21/06/2018 08:44

Irene was going to say the same as Prettybird

What's happened with regard to passporting? Any clarity?

mrsreynolds · 21/06/2018 08:58

Why can't I find the new thread??

mrsreynolds · 21/06/2018 10:40

It won't link on my phone

prettybird · 21/06/2018 10:48

That's weird, because I got there from the app on my phone ( very old iPhone) Confused I'd do you another link but linking threads from the app is really difficult.

Can you find the EU Referendum 2016 topic?

topcat1980 · 21/06/2018 10:50

Each proposal seems to be negotiating with the Tory party, rather than the EU.

Crashing out is coming.

mrsreynolds · 21/06/2018 12:21

It's not showing in the topic
