Not the Brexit Arms

Since BrexitArmsLandlady says she isn't starting anymore threads here's a place to discuss Brexit developments for those that still want to.

It never ceases to amaze me what a shambles this is.

The cabinet still can't even agree what we want, let alone what we're going to get.

ttprw - you seem to have really enjoyed writing that! Unfortunately you won't get the reaction you are hoping for. Cause , you know what many of us want immigration, we just don't want it to just be Europeans but anyone from where ever they come from as long as the have the skills we need.

ttprw · 23/06/2018 18:58

We'll see double....

54321go · 23/06/2018 19:20

@Double
Why would Europeans want to come to a country with a failing economy in the future. Don't forget you 'won'.

Cherrypi · 24/06/2018 09:18

Leavers what type of brexit are you hoping for? Norway, Canada or no deal/crash out?

Walkingdeadfangirl · 24/06/2018 16:02

Cherrypi Most leavers, like I am now, are expecting to actually leave the EU, there isn't really any hope involved. So nothing like Norway. Probably like Canada but not exactly the same as we are a different country. If the EU dont want to strike a deal they we will just leave, no crashing involved just a polite goodbye. Then we can make deals with the EU as equals, without all this political blackmailing, from outside the group.

JWIM · 24/06/2018 16:13

Why would other countries take us at our word in agreeing a Free Trade Agreement when, to get to the position you describe Walking, we would have breached our obligations under the Good Friday/Belfast International Peace Treaty?

I know that we could walk away from those obligations but how does that fit with our wanting a strong negotiating position with other countries around the world? Is it a good 'look'?

Posted in another thread (not by me). I don’t know the MM rules regarding quoting other members so please report if not allowed.

“Theres been a massive surge in UK based companies buying and renting property in Dublin. Basically they need to stay in the EU and are moving key personnel over, buying residential and commercial property to maintain an EU base. It's accelerating month-on-month and it's going to result in a lot of multi-nationals as well as currently UK based commerce leaving the UK permanently.

How anyone thought Brexit would translate to more jobs is beyond me, it lacks even the vaguest semblance of logic to think that the UK would be an attractive base for international businesses having alienated their largest markets.

Between Brexit and Trump, there's a lot of bad decisions being made lately on the basis of what people think is autonomy but is just isolationism.”

Walkingdeadfangirl · 24/06/2018 18:11

Do you have any idea how long that will take?
It could be done quite fast if both sides actually wanted, of course the EU might not want to do such a deal (or drag it out for political reasons). Which is why we might just have to say goodbye without a deal.

Why would other countries take us at our word in agreeing a Free Trade
Why wouldn't they? I dont see anyone saying they intend to breach international treaties. This would come under project fear.

54321go · 24/06/2018 18:19

Define 'quite fast'. A couple of years if you are very lucky for some basic agreements.

If you are thinking of 'crashing out' a couple of years is a long time to wait to trade with others while only emergency food supplies are coming in.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 24/06/2018 18:51

and you're happy that the likes of Airbus ... are going to have to leave the UK

Is that the same Airbus who said they would leave the UK if we didn't join the Euro? If we voted to leave in the referendum 2 years ago? And yet they are still here!
Is that the same Airbus who make most of their engines in the USA (not in the EU). Who might move to China (not in the EU).
Is that the same Airbus who's components are zero tariff rated under the WTO agreement?

Greenland with one industry and 50,000 people took three years to leave the EU presumably with both sides willing. Canada, we can also assume with both sides willing took 8 years. Why should we assume those time scales are in any way untypical, or were somehow on a slow track?

Anyone who can't come up with an agreement which preserves the Good Friday Agreement is in effect saying that they are prepared to break an International Treaty.

JWIM · 24/06/2018 19:15

Airbus will have a problem if the UK is not in EASA - which we won't be if we are not in the EU. Airbus will have wings that have no safety rating until the UK gains international acceptance that it has a replacement aviation safety authority in place.

Now sorting all that may be possible but not quick.

And breaching an international treaty is automatic through the actions taken by the UK in leaving the EU/SM/CU .

Yes that Airbus.
Orders and production are worked out over 10 years or more.
Setting up a factory takes years and when/if Brexit takes place they will have to factor in increased costs. They will pay these until the designs they are building are replaced by new designs then start again in a new factory somewhere else. Similarly with BMW and the Mini. They will wait until that model/range is replaced by a new model then pack up and leave. It may be 3 or more years before they actually go.
JLR (Indian owned) have said the new Discoverys will be made in Slovakia. In theory they said they will produce a new Electric Range rover in the UK but it is still largely on the drawing board and not ready for several years. As they are Indian based they may well consider building them in India as that economy is on the rise.

54321go · 24/06/2018 19:25

Bob Dylan perhaps?

ttprw · 24/06/2018 19:26

I see my post upthread was deleted...
No idea why...mnhq have not contacted me.
So I will reiterate what I said:
Racist leavers will be in for a shock when eu migrants are replaced by commonwealth ones.
I'm pretty sure they want fewer courted faces, not more.
Racists being upset pleases me.
Ok....mnhq....what's wrong with this post??

ttprw · 24/06/2018 19:26

Coloured, not courted!

Ttprw the above ^^ wasn’t your original post word for word though was it? (And no it wasn’t me that reported).

54321go · 24/06/2018 19:31

A world in black and white, possibly quite apt I suppose.
