Yet it is a great mistake to suppose that the only writers who matter are those whom the educated in their saner moments can take seriously. There exists a subterranean world where pathological fantasies disguised as ideas are churned out by crooks and half-educated fanatics for the benefit of the ignorant and the superstitious. There are times when this underworld emerges from the depths and suddenly fascinates, capturers and dominates multitudes of usually sane and responsible people, who thereupon take leave of sanity and responsibility. And it occasionally happens that this underworld becomes a political power and changes the course of history.
Norm Cohn ‘Warrant for Genocide’ 1970

(As referenced by Nick Cohen).

We have a deal (or bits of a deal). Bino til Dec 2020. Then the cliff?

Still a long way to go. It sounds better than it could be. But worse than it initially seems.

Corbyn's new found love of free speech isn't going down well with his own party.

Owen Smith gone...

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 23/03/2018 18:39

What with the antisemitic council candidate being selected, I should hope people have an issue with it.

RedToothBrush · 23/03/2018 18:41

Owen Smith @OwenSmith_MP
Just been sacked by @jeremycorbyn for my long held views on the damage #Brexit will do to the Good Friday Agreement & the economy of the entire U.K. Those views are shared by Labour members & supporters and I will continue to speak up for them, and in the interest of our country.

Pain says Jeremy Corbyn backed antisemitic mural on ‘grounds of freedom of speech’

Two posts later Pain and Mrs R both break news that Owen Smith was just sacked for his freedom of speech.

I have tried and tried to give JC the benefit of the doubt but I just can't.

MyLittleVespa · 23/03/2018 18:42

F*ck Corbyn. Angry

He'll allow freedom of opinion and a free vote on Syrian air strikes but not even differences of opinion on this.

Labour and Tory remainers and other moderates need to quit and join the Lib Dems ( Hobson's choice) en masse.

I’m not clued up at all about our political parties because I am astonished that labour have an antisemitic side. I know ken livingstone was problematic (not being euphemistic - that’s all I can recall of what happened) but I really am surprised that it’s labour with this massive problem. Am I being naive/clueless or has this always been a part of the Labour Party?

MyLittleVespa · 23/03/2018 18:47

Tin hats on.

May cleverly, quietly and successfully pushing for a soft Brexit whilst keeping hard line Toris at bay by sprouting xenophobic sound bytes. Russia not best pleased. Russie try to farm the UK government for the Salisbury events to topple Conservtaive government, Corbyn win snap election and voilà hard Brexit.

I fear Corbyn more than the Conservatives now.

MyLittleVespa · 23/03/2018 18:48

*frame the UK government

Peregrina · 23/03/2018 18:50

I hope that Labour doesn't botch the leadership coup this time, and puts a moderate anti-brexiter in. Not a Blairite either. That was right 20 years ago, but times have moved on since then.

mrsreynolds · 23/03/2018 18:50

Tbh even if there were a GE now it would be a hung parliament again...prob larger lib dems and green votes

MyLittleVespa · 23/03/2018 18:51

PainInTheEar Labour members are generally pro Palestine, some of this support turns into anti Israel sentiment and anti semitism. I believe the Conservatives are less invested in the Palestine movement.

thecatfromjapan · 23/03/2018 18:58

Another utterly depressing day in UK politics. Sad

thecatfromjapan · 23/03/2018 19:04

A hung parliament wouldn't be so bad, if the numbers pushed to a LibDem and Green coalition with Labour. But Labour have so far ruled that out, and it would need Lab to win most seats, and ... Corbyn.

Interestingly, I saw Lisa Nandy (tipped to be replacement for Corbyn) in the Twitter thread Red linked to condemning the anti-semitism. Which is interesting.

#Breaking A judge sitting at the High Court has granted an application by the Information Commissioner’s Office for a warrant to search the London offices of Cambridge Analytica

RedToothBrush · 23/03/2018 19:11

Re CA

This is a thread of tweets from the hearing

twitter.com/GazTheJourno/status/977249899753410560

They have tried to blame Wylie and smear him as a liar.

This:
Gareth Corfield @GazTheJourno
CA puts forward to the court the suggestion that an "independent third party" such as accountants or management consultants could search their HQ instead of the ICO - but the regulator could "have input" into their terms of reference.
is crackers as the ICO ARE (supposed to be) a body Independent from the government and it beggar belief that a data company does not know who they are regulated by. (Remember CA offices in Nottingham were recently raided by the ICO. This is totally disingenuous).

CA are arguing that the ICO have not met the test necessary for a search warrant

But it was issued as of 3 minutes ago.

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 23/03/2018 19:13

What is also interesting is that CA spent hours arguing the point. The ICO spoke for 90seconds, had no questions from CA.

And the judge issued the warrant.

Wow. Corbyn. Owen Smith was quite good on NI. Some hopeless twit you have to mute will replace him.

Livingstone is unbelievable. He says something. Goes on the airways to kind of apologise. And he cannot bloody stop talking about the same thing he had to apologise for.

I don't get Corbyn. And wouldn't be too sure of him or McDonnell's being enlightened. Or moved on from the '50's.

Cailleach1 · 23/03/2018 19:33

There is an excellent Remain Labour MP in my constituency. Labour have lost me, though. Pity as I would like to vote for my Labour MP because I think they are quite courageous.

squoosh · 23/03/2018 19:40

'Jeremy Corbyn backed antisemitic mural on ‘grounds of freedom of speech’

Sickening isn't it?

Fuck Corbyn and his cronies quite frankly.

(I'm too angry to try and be eloquent)

thecatfromjapan · 23/03/2018 19:44

Cailleach If your Labour MP is strongly Remain, they are worth supporting - for a hung Parliament, with a pro-Remain tendency. Also, if they are outspokenly Remain, it's worth remembering/bearing in mind, that they are implicitly going against the Corbyn line. I think we do need a strong pro-Remain tendency in Parliament.

Having said that ... it is extremely difficult at the moment, isn't it?

Erm....Diane Abbott’s still on the front bench for saying the same exact thing in November.
