Westministenders: One for the Women

Just remember that women are more likely to be worried about Brexit.

Their women's and workers rights are more at risk from departure from the EU, the ECJ and potentially the EHCR.
They are more likely to be worried as EU citizens in the UK due to taking time to have and raise families.
They are more likely to have been badly affected by austerity and an economic downturn will hit them first.
If they are leavers they are more likely to have changed their minds.
They are less likely to be MPs so have less representation.
They are more likely to be feeling politically unrepresented by any party and unsure of who they will vote for at the next election.
They are more likely to get abuse for expressing a political opinion. Many report having been subjected to sexual harassment from political colleagues.
They are more likely to be the target of abuse on social media.
They are earn less than their political colleagues, they earn less than their media colleagues, they earn less than their business colleagues. They are less likely to be in powerful lobby groups.

Then there's #metoo

And to cap it off women's groups are finding it hard to get their voice heard, and are frequently being labelled as hysterical or bigoted for merely wanting to discuss things and be reassured that their fears are acknowledged. They are frequently dismissed as liars or over sensitive.

This is 2018.

It doesn't feel progressive. It doesn't look equal.

Brexit has more of an impact on women.

@Olivia I've decided to borrow your optimism for the coming week. I need it to keep plodding forwards. So thank you. Flowers

@Somerville I know where you were going with your comments about Mayhem, and I took them in the spirit in which they were intended. Flowers

It was an interesting discussion about field-trips and degrees. Grin

(That's just a little conversational interjection.)

OliviaD68 · 11/03/2018 22:47

@thecatfromjapan

We're gonna beat this. Smile

Sostenueto · 11/03/2018 22:47

Got a letter yesterday from dwp about a yearly pension I get. In fact, I get 2. The second one is for £00.67p per year. They wanted to know whether this pension had gone up, if so, then they have ovetpaid me and I may have my benefits stopped. I have the same letter every year about the same thing, and each year I fill it in. I am wondering how much money do you think it cost them to send me that letter? I mean, I'm all for making sure that people get the right amount of benefits but..............Hmm

thecatfromjapan · 11/03/2018 22:50

Grin @KenDodd

Sos Honestly, I think you should avoid slipping into the whole 'all politicians are lying bastards' thing. There are real differences between politicians: as people, as representatives of distinct political aims.

It's really, really important to make sure you know the differences between them.

I know you do inform yourself as to those differences - so don't ever underestimate or belittle the importance of doing that work.

That whole cynicism about politics and politicians is just another way of people evading adult respsibility.

thecatfromjapan · 11/03/2018 22:51

We are, Olivia.

woman11017 · 11/03/2018 22:52

We are, Olivia and cat Smile.

Icantreachthepretzels · 11/03/2018 22:53

My whole family are marching on the 24th. We have a flag each. Just need to make a placard (my one from September is a bit out of date). Can't wait!

Sostenueto · 11/03/2018 22:54

Well if we mustn't make generalisations........

thecatfromjapan · 11/03/2018 22:56

I wonder if I'll be well enough to go on a march on the 24th? I'm getting better quite quickly, so I might. Smile

So far, my aim has been to buy some aubergines from a local shop that I haven't been able to get to (I know - small goals!) but I think this might actually be better. Grin

Somerville · 11/03/2018 22:57

Thanks cat.

And I shall try for some optimism, somehow.

Icantreachthepretzels · 11/03/2018 23:00

Here's hoping cat - but remember - you don't have to do the full march - whatever you're up to is fine. Any support helps shows the passion of feeling and strength of our numbers. You could just turn up to wherever the speakers will be and bring a deck chair Grin It all counts.

Sostenueto · 11/03/2018 23:00

I'm always optimistic, especially on here, optimistic that for one whole day I won't get shot down.Grin

Sostenueto · 11/03/2018 23:02

I'll be rooting for you all on march, good luck hope you have a good turnout.

TheElementsSong · 11/03/2018 23:03

March veterans, how does the event typically proceed? There’s a march here and we want to attend, so far the info just says it starts at 11am - but we have a long-standing commitment at 12 noon.

Is it likely there will be people there at 11, and will it be easy to get out before noon? Or would it be better to try and join up after our appointment (likely around 2pm) or will everyone have gone?

Sostenueto · 11/03/2018 23:03

No offers on Hammond's spring speech yet.Sad

thecatfromjapan · 11/03/2018 23:05

@Sos Oh, it's just I worry that you're going to sink into that all-encompassing cynicism. Please don't.

For what it's worth, I think your approach of being generally good-willed and taking one day at a time is, frankly, the only way to get through all this.

I meant to post that the other night but was too tired. So I'm posting it now.

I'm guessing you're not in a big city, though, because homelessness is critical. People died across the country (which was in the news) during the cold snap. Its pretty horrific. And it actually frightens me that there is so much craziness going on that this is not headline news.

Icantreachthepretzels · 11/03/2018 23:09

@TheElementSong the last march I went on started late. There was a long time gathered at the starting point (we thought we would have missed the beginning and have to run to catch up - but we stood waiting for about half an hour). People seemed surprised we were setting off so quickly tbh - so sometimes the delays might be longer. The march itself didn;t last long but there were hours of speakers afterwards.
But that was the London one.
It depends how many speakers are coming to your march. It could well be worth turning up at the end... but not much will happen before you have to leave for your appointment (in my experience anyway).

Melassa · 11/03/2018 23:11

I'm from Italy. People did vote for the cash. The day after the elections there were queues at social security and post offices asking for the forms to fill in. Berlusconi also offered cash, iirc it was higher than M5S. There was also talk of an alternative currency, with the euro being used for exports only. None of these proposals were thought through, just like with Brexit, and at some point before the election the president Mattarella had to tell the parties to rein in some if their wackier proposals/promises. There were memes in FB about Berlusconi's crazy promises but oddly enough none about the M5S.

No one wants to form a govt with M5S so it seems. That troglodyte Salvini even asked the PD (left wing)'if they wanted to form a coalition with the Lega so they would have the majority over M5S. The PD don't want to do business with "extremists" so have pushed back all overtures from either side. Desperation appears to be setting in though and some on both the right and left are thinking of holding their noses and coming to an agreement with them.

Melassa · 11/03/2018 23:12

That was to BCF.

thecatfromjapan · 11/03/2018 23:16

Melassa and BCF I didn't know that about the Italian election. Shock

Sostenueto · 11/03/2018 23:20

cat not in a big city but one 30 miles away, but am on the coast and lots of homeless people on streets here ( well some of them are homeless). We seem to get a lot of people coming into town on public transport to beg. They are very persistent sometimes too. I have to wait at station in car every day for dgd and get accosted every day with loud bangs on window and shouted demands. Other genuine homeless people on the up here, a lot of youngsters too. Teens I mean. Drugs prevalent around here and alcohol. Not generalising just fact.
Thanks cat for your support. I have had ongoing painful treatment for a long while but still here which makes me appreciate every day really. And yes always been good-willed. Had terrible past which I don't dwell on, hard life but there is always someone worse off, always. I keep that in mind and it helps me keep my feet on ground. I feel for you cat as I know what suffering is but there is always light at end of tunnel. And hope and optimism in the smallest things. All will be well.FlowersCakeBrewWineBear

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2018 23:21

Thanks, melassa very interesting

Sostenueto · 11/03/2018 23:23

Crikey! That's not good for Italy!

Peregrina · 11/03/2018 23:27

I have a very old Geography A level, and a Geosciences degree, taken for fun after retiring early. I always wonder what options May took - she could have spent her time studying earthquakes and glaciation, or she could have spent her time on water and land resources and distribution. The latter would probably come under human or economic geography, but I suspect she didn't go for these sorts of options.

I agree with Agnes - for my first degree back in the early 1970s a 2:2 was perfectly acceptable. Someone had to be really really good to get a first. Of about 200 of us taking my subject, only 1 person did, and about 60 or so got 2:1s, the other 120 or so got 2:2s and a few slackers who only did the work at the last moment came away with thirds.
