Westministenders: One for the Women

Just remember that women are more likely to be worried about Brexit.

Their women's and workers rights are more at risk from departure from the EU, the ECJ and potentially the EHCR.
They are more likely to be worried as EU citizens in the UK due to taking time to have and raise families.
They are more likely to have been badly affected by austerity and an economic downturn will hit them first.
If they are leavers they are more likely to have changed their minds.
They are less likely to be MPs so have less representation.
They are more likely to be feeling politically unrepresented by any party and unsure of who they will vote for at the next election.
They are more likely to get abuse for expressing a political opinion. Many report having been subjected to sexual harassment from political colleagues.
They are more likely to be the target of abuse on social media.
They are earn less than their political colleagues, they earn less than their media colleagues, they earn less than their business colleagues. They are less likely to be in powerful lobby groups.

Then there's #metoo

And to cap it off women's groups are finding it hard to get their voice heard, and are frequently being labelled as hysterical or bigoted for merely wanting to discuss things and be reassured that their fears are acknowledged. They are frequently dismissed as liars or over sensitive.

This is 2018.

It doesn't feel progressive. It doesn't look equal.

Brexit has more of an impact on women.

I'm surprised and pleased to see that my MP wasn't a signatory of that letter. He seems to be very pro brexit - but maybe he's just a head in the sand, 'will of the people' coward and not a swivel eyed loon.

How sad that I'm pleased my MP is just craven - and not actually crazy. What a country we live in!

Chope is not on there - its not an exhaustive list - but a good guide.
I found a list somewhere : will track it down

Icantreachthepretzels · 10/03/2018 17:28

oh - so I may be praising my mp too soon?
Thanks Talk

Labour-The other MPs and the 700k members are overwhelmingly Remain or soft Brexit.

This is true. Something like 70% of Labour MPs are pro remain or soft Brexit, except they represent constituents who are not.

TalkinPeace · 10/03/2018 17:44

Here is the list of all of the 2016 MPs by party and tendency ....

Still looking for the list of the hard core ....

Thanks Talk

turns out he was in the leave camp all along - the little weasel - so considering he is in a remain city, all his talk of 'will of the people' actually just means 'will of himself.' No wonder he came so close to being unseated in 2017. Fingers crossed for next time (and that next time is earlier than 2022)

This site has quite a good list of the hard line Brexiters of the Right Wing

An example of the UKIP or anti EU protagonists who dislike red tape.

He said to the jury he felt ‘no responsibility whatsoever’ for the death. He disliked ‘red tape’ and liked to negotiate work costs ‘man-to-man’.

man-to-man’ - What does that phrase mean. I'm glad I don't carry the burden of maleness.

Interesting Yougov survey. Asked lots of questions about identifying as British or English and the union.

Example question... Which of the following reflects your view?

•It is more important to me that the Union between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is maintained, even if it means putting it before the interests of England

•It is more important to me that the interests of England are prioritised, even if it were to put the Union between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland at risk

•Neither

•Don’t know

Also lots of questions about opinions on decentralisation or delegation. Asked about delegating powers over things such as overseas workers in the area , education curriculum and health policy etc to what extent should this be delegated to local authorities.

woman11017 · 10/03/2018 18:49

Peculiar ( or quite clear Hmm) methodology to that survey then pain
No space for nuance. Or Remain in EU? Sounds like they have the 'findings' all ready to go, they just need the numbers to back them up.
man-to-man well..........

Interesting : I did not get that one - but then I'm an immigrant Grin

I like being on YouGov - I recommend getting on the list to all posters on this thread

Macron stepping in to the space where english racism has left an economic and educational opportunity. He's not daft.

@faisalislam
With the cultural, historical and familial ties between the UK and India, there is no way Macron should even be able to try to make a play such as this... but he is... 1/2Faisal Islam added,

... and that is partly because with a slump in visas given by UK to Indian students since 2010, France has decided to try to step in...Faisal Islam added,

@EmmanuelMacron
I want to double the number of Indian students coming to France. If you choose France you gain access to francophonie, you gain access to Europe. #IndianYouth

The purpose is to make India our first strategic partner in the region and I want you to make France your first strategic partner in Europe and in the West world. We share the same vision of the world.

Macron is not a fool.
France has a HUGE islamic population and has given sanctuary to some really rather nasty clerics
but he is also the prime driver of clamping down on posted workers

France (and to an even greater level Germany) NEED immigrants to stop their labour force collapsing in the next 20 years

Italy is the most extreme, but it will quietly assimilate most of the immigrants as it needs them
and the UK will be left to wallow in its self pity

The as ever on the money nick cohen

Unite's candidate for general secretary is Jennie Formby. Who also happens to be the former mistress of Unite's leader len McCluskey.

And I never knew John McDonnell employed Corbyn's son.

Wrt the Buzzfeed article - Anne Main MP "...exposed on Buzzfeed as an active member of ERG, the pro-brexit extreme right group. Spouting quasi fascistic slogans."

She is also what could be classed as semi literate. This is clearly someone who is enjoying the company of people far above her in terms of education and expectations. Interesting to see the toadying when a small group establishes itself and allows others to join.

woman11017 · 10/03/2018 21:50

Strange that Cohen didn't make one reference to the 1992 Trades Union Act, which Blair chose not to repeal. And now replaced by the The Trade Union Act 2016. It has decimated the ability of workers to form unions and organise actions.

The longstanding requirement for a majority ‘yes’ vote from those voting has been beefed up so that the ballot will only validate a call for industrial action if “at least 50% of those who were entitled to vote in the ballot did so”. This is likely to prove to be a significant issue in large-scale ballots so expect, in future, to see a rise in single workplace or partly aggregated workplace ballots so that a low turnout at some workplaces will prevent strike action from being taken at those workplaces only rather that the low vote potentially having the effect of derailing the entire ballot process

That article referred to Spanish speaking activists coming over to help organise the cleaners' strikes in London university.

Most British people have no idea how to organise and conduct successful industrial or civil actions.

Hence plummeting pay and conditions hence Brexit.

I agree that there's is corruption and nepotism in the current trades union movement and it is run for an by men. But we need only look at German workers striking for a 28 hour week this week and compare it with NHS workers having a 'pay rise' dependent on losing a day's holiday to see where almost no trades union representation has left us.

and had a kid with him while he was married to somebody else

And I never knew John McDonnell employed Corbyn's son.
HOW did you not know that ?????
The Heil mentioned it before the referendum
and @PrivateEye covers the corruption every single fortnight

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2018 21:53

TIP I thought I read that the ERG WhatsApp group numbered 100 MPs, including sympathisers

Many Tory MPs described themselves as "Eurosceptic" before the EU Ref, including Cameron
In recent years, rightwing Tories have redefined Eurosceptic to mean actual hostility to the EU

I suspect there could indeed be 100 Tory MPs who support Brexit atm, even if some of them kept quiet before under other PMs, for career reasons
This would include those who have only jumped on the bandwagon, i.e. opportunists rather than True Beleavers.

RedToothBrush · 10/03/2018 21:53

you should .... it makes lots of it make more sense

and the Economist shows where the money vote goes

I know an MP in that group who is purely observing ..... they are canny and cynical, probably mildly leave but flexible
they are not alone

woman The German system of Works Councils has built-in union representation within firms & organisations.

It brings together unions and management within each organisation to discuss all issues which are likely to affect workers,
not just pay, hours, pensions and redundancies,
but also ongoing training, apprenticeships, restructuring, investment in new models etc

Unions are very powerful, but the Works Councils mean they rarely have to strike, or if they do, only for an hour or a day - maximum pressure on the employer for minimum cost to the workers and unions.

German firms are happy with this system and with quite bit of "red tape" i.e. workers rights, environmental protection etc
There is generally no culture of presenteeism - working unpaid overtime would be regarded as inefficient, a sign of problems.

This generally cooperative culture with clearly defined rights hasn't held back German firms
imo, the UK policy of grinding down workers has not helped UK firms or public bodies:
German productivity is about 20% higher than in the UK

It is part of the German social contract created after WW2 to strengthen civil society
