Westministenders: One for the Women

Just remember that women are more likely to be worried about Brexit.

Their women's and workers rights are more at risk from departure from the EU, the ECJ and potentially the EHCR.
They are more likely to be worried as EU citizens in the UK due to taking time to have and raise families.
They are more likely to have been badly affected by austerity and an economic downturn will hit them first.
If they are leavers they are more likely to have changed their minds.
They are less likely to be MPs so have less representation.
They are more likely to be feeling politically unrepresented by any party and unsure of who they will vote for at the next election.
They are more likely to get abuse for expressing a political opinion. Many report having been subjected to sexual harassment from political colleagues.
They are more likely to be the target of abuse on social media.
They are earn less than their political colleagues, they earn less than their media colleagues, they earn less than their business colleagues. They are less likely to be in powerful lobby groups.

Then there's #metoo

And to cap it off women's groups are finding it hard to get their voice heard, and are frequently being labelled as hysterical or bigoted for merely wanting to discuss things and be reassured that their fears are acknowledged. They are frequently dismissed as liars or over sensitive.

This is 2018.

It doesn't feel progressive. It doesn't look equal.

Brexit has more of an impact on women.

"Basically EU membership was hardwired into the devolution settlements"

Hell, that's yet another Brexit problem crawling out of the woodwork
We don't know the consequences of this for democracy in Scotland and Wales, not just NI

What other problems are the govt hiding ?
Worse yet, what has been overlooked and will suddenly crash into view after the transition ends / hard Brexit

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2018 11:07

swedish Any wc kid who messed around even on one uni course would be sternly told - including on Mumsnet - that all their problems in life stemmed from this earlier bad choice.

One of the many privileges of being born into wealth is not just that you get so much better choices,
but that you can casually bugger them all up but still enjoy your life of wealth

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2018 11:10

From Pain - Very sad news about Liverpool Women's Hospital restricting access to Irish women
Staff shortages: because of limited budgets and maybe fewer E27 staff ?

SwedishEdith · 10/03/2018 11:18

Exactly BCF. I suspect Prue Leith would be one of those voices.

mrsreynolds · 10/03/2018 11:19

woman
I'm the same...lifelong labour voter
And yet here I am...unable to vote for them...Ive e mailed labour hq. No reply.
I've e mailed the lib dem (pro brexit) candidate. No reply
The only reply has been from the Tory mp!
I'm going to meet with him at his next surgery to discuss my concerns re self ID.
Brexit will have to another day (but he's one of jrms cronies so I don't hold out much hope there...)
I'm so so depressed about this
Dh is head in the sand type. Just won't believe any govt will do this yo their own citizens
Horrendous news re Liverpool women's hospital!
So it begins....

HesterThrale · 10/03/2018 11:20

Just thinking re health insurance... I expect travel insurance policies for Europe to get more pricey post-2019, as the companies will know that travellers can't fall back on their free EHIC care, and they'll receive more health claims.

I haven't yet come across one single advantage of Brexit for me or anyone I know. Most of my friends are blissfully unaware. When I do occasionally talk to them about it, I don't think they believe me. Holding in all this anger is killing me.

mrsreynolds · 10/03/2018 11:28

Yes Hester
It's hard
I'm sure my blood pressure has soared in recent months!

RedToothBrush · 10/03/2018 11:35

What if you are irish living in ni or irish living in Liverpool.

I travelled to Liverpool because they were only ones with specialist services in the nw. There are maybe a dozen maternity departments closer.

mrsreynolds · 10/03/2018 11:38

It'll be odd because the kids and I can still get a EHIC card but dh won't...

We were also planning a trip next summer (20th wedding anniversary) and no idea how it will work with 3 of us on an eu passport and dh on a What??...

He currently has 2 British passports because of work (travels a lot)

🤔

This Huge Leak of WhatsApp Chats Reveals The Full Fury Of The Tories’ Brexit Split

Theresa May's approach to the EU was likened to Neville Chamberlain's appeasement of Hitler, and Remainer Tories were called "condescending arseholes", according to a cache of Brexiteer messages obtained by BuzzFeed News.

thecatfromjapan · 10/03/2018 12:19

I think the most alarming part of that story is that it lays bare the extent to which the ERG are driving policy. For me, it shatters any illusion about Teresa May playing some clever game and steering towards a less-than-disastrous-Brexit.

Though I feel few on this thread believe that TM is some brilliant political genius.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 10/03/2018 12:49

What I found really confusing is that they appear to be genuinely concerned that people would see anything less than a hard Brexit as a betrayal but they’re the ones pushing that narrative! Hard Brexit wasn’t on the table until they pushed for it and they could easily retract on that front if they were worried about being re-elected etc.

I suppose they might not have been talking about the people that they’ve been elected to serve but the puppet masters but it didn’t come across that way in my reading of it.

woman11017 · 10/03/2018 13:03

In other news FN is changing its name and London realises the cost of brexit.
Guess which press these articles are in?
www.rtl.fr/actu/politique/front-national-le-changement-de-nom-ne-convainc-pas-tout-le-monde-au-sein-du-parti-7792550122

Two fascist parties gone this week? the ukips and front national?

We're suffering from Stockholm syndrome here.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2018 13:12

pain The ERG is only using the wrath of the voters as an excuse for continuing with Hard Brexit.
They are trying to scare their fellow Tory MPs into supporting the ERG Brexit agenda

A very common excuse, including in criminal court:
"I only did this because they made me"

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 10/03/2018 13:37

I thought they whatsapp group was only for the ERGers, so they wouldn’t need to pretend with each other. I might’ve read it wrong!

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2018 15:19

There are 100 MPs on that WhatsApp Group, nearly â…“ of the Tory MPs
Not all of them will be hardcore;
not the Borg, no matter what they claim

Also, someone leaked their WhatsApp chats for Buzzfeed to publish - it might not have been staff, or the staff might have had permission from their MP

So they want to stiffen morale of anyone starting to panic

  • and surely some MPs are reading the impact reports or listening to the statements by Tusk, Barnier & co and hence getting worried, unless they are all 100% batshit
TalkinPeace · 10/03/2018 15:37

Bigchoc
unless they are all 100% batshit
Well since you mention it .....

DH and I have been invited to a Surgery by our MP next week.
He an anti Brexit Labour bod (loudly and strongly Remain on his FB page)
It will be interesting to talk to him about it.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2018 15:48

TIP Grin I did pause, Typing that !

With Labour, it just seems to be the leader and a very small number around him who want their red lines,
apparently to enable some mysterious socialist policies that other EU socialist parties manage to do Hmm
Either ignorance, or something worse going on there

The other MPs and the 700k members are overwhelmingly Remain or soft Brexit

With the Tories, looks like â…“ of the MPs are hard Brexit and if May were toppled, the current favourites are worse:
JRM, Johnson etc
We know something nasty is going on there too, at least the asset-strippers and the tax exile oligarchs

Unfortunately, only May looks in danger of being replaced - the Labour membership so far support JC despite his Brexit stance

TalkinPeace · 10/03/2018 15:57

With the Tories, looks like â…“ of the MPs are hard Brexit
Actually its nearer 35 MPs in total on both sides
and they are utterly rabid about it.
Link to the list of 60 which includes a few Wets
www.scribd.com/document/371977491/Letter-from-European-Research-Group-to-PM-May#from_embed

I had my room full of Brexiters but managed to stay off that topic
but interestingly the king of the swivel eyed loons (Chope) is far more marginalised than many realise ....

I do think that a lot of voters will look to their wallets not airy fairy stuff when it comes down to the wire

mrsreynolds · 10/03/2018 16:17

Ah yes
My MP is there

woman11017 · 10/03/2018 16:31

St Albans MP too MrsR
"StAlbansMP Anne Main, was exposed on Buzzfeed as an active member of ERG, the pro-brexit extreme right group. Spouting quasi fascistic slogans. St Albans voted 63% for REMAIN how can an MP like MAIN purport to represent us?"

mrsreynolds · 10/03/2018 16:53

At least my MP is representing the majority vote of his constituents 😩
No idea what main is doing....

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 10/03/2018 17:19

Ah thanks bigchoc!

On the Eu posted workers

Axel Antoni
@antoni_UK
1/ Corbyn thinks he has found a line on how to bash EU migrants without being seen as xenophobic.

The EU Posted Workers Directive.

This directive allows companies to post workers within the EU without having to abide to local labour laws.
